Well, it's not really a UI problem, more a learning curve problem.
When shit hits the fan/important event occurs, the game pauses. By pressing "a" (or "q" in qwerty), you'll have a page where you can see the latest items on the problem/actions log. Selecting the entry that seems to be the problem, you then press z (or w), and it centers on the person/creature/etc... that seem to be the cause of all the ruckus.

So that won't, of course, ring a bell, but I wanted to show you that with 2 key strokes, you can easily access the info that you need.
The "tools" are there, and they are quite efficient at helping you deal with issues or just clearly stating what in the holy flying fuck is happening.
Because, while the game is super complex by nature, you can imagine that it wouldn't be that popular if it was just an excrutiating mess at every turn Razz

So that's why I say that IMO it's important to have the "lay of the land" before knowing the game mechanics, since it makes it easier to know where, what and who you fucked up/over Very Happy

Don't dispair! With a nice tileset and the wiki, you can achieve Asperger levels in no time Smile

Oh, believe me I tried.. several times. I wasn't trolling or anything with my comment... I really want to get into it... since years. I truly believe that, objectively, this one of the best games ever created. I'm also not a graphics whore, far from it... but this.. in 2017.. I just don't want to cope with it, out of principle. Maybe one day someone will make this possible on some voxel-engine or something... or, when gaming truly goes completely to shit in the next couple of years.. I propably won't give a crap anymore and cope.

And I guess, waiting isn't the worst thing with DF since it's still being updated and refined to this day and propably will be for quite some time.

Oh don't worry, I didn't think you were having a go. And even so, I can take a joke Smile
Yeah, I totally understand how and why DF puts people off.
And yeah, in a sense, it will always be there in the near future, don't fret. Heck, it's gonna be there for the foreseable future.
So don't worry, do your thing man, it's still gonna be around in case of extreme external failure.
And better, stronger than ever I hope Smile

loooool

https://store.steampowered.com/app/975370/Dwarf_Fortress/
Available: time is subjective
DEVELOPER: Bay 12 Games
PUBLISHER: Kitfox Games

Quote:
Whats New:

Nothing substantial is new or changed, under the hood. It’s still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with graphics support and music by default. A few bells and whistles won’t change that.

You may already be familiar with the tile set mod packs from Michał “Mayday” Madej and Patrick Martin “Meph” Schroeder. They’re collaborating on an all-new, from-scratch tileset, as seen in the trailer and screenshots. Meanwhile, Dabu has composed a few musical tracks, to match the seasons, and some other audio bits and pieces.

With the goal of simulating all of existence, Bay 12 estimates they’re only about 42% done.

Your purchase includes Dwarf Fortress Classic if you prefer to play without graphics or music or Steam-specific features, in the “classic” beta branch.

Dwarf Fortress has tons more depth (literally too, since Rimworld doesn't have z-levels, meaning you can't dig underground Very Happy) but Rimworld is much easier to pick up and it's not a "casual" game by any means, DF just is that chock full of features that nothing else really compares. And DF is still in development, Rimworld is done in the sense that it's past 1.0 now.

It's easy to just recommend both, unless you really dislike the control scheme / UI of DF.

It's not that difficult. You should get the hang of most of the mechanics in about 10 years or so Laughing

That sounds pretty accurate, I tried giving it a go a few years ago and was really charmed by all the possibilities it offered, a true PC game in its purest sense that there are no limitations to your imagination and everything is so deep and complex, but boy does it require a real investment on your behalf Very Happy

I rarely find a YT channel worthy of promoting, but damn, this guy is good. His name is kruggsmash and he does narrated LPs, picking out noteworthy events, and actually makes drawings of characters in those situations, visualising the game brilliantly. Obviously they are not artistic masterpieces, but they certainly do the job.

And he seem to have an actual talent at narration and writing his scripts. After Mathas transitioned to a similar format, I just had to unsubscribe from him since his delivery was always forced and verbiage often cringeworthy, but this guy seem to be much better.

Here's the first episode of a 6 video long series that I enjoyed.

And recently he also did a fighting tournament series, complete with pretty good narration and illustrations.

A great choice for DF fans and people who enjoy narrative gameplay retellings.

Had to check. It came out today, but wasn't there a noclip on DF already? I swear I heard that story about the cats and alcohol poisoning before.

Anyways, I really hope the steam version won't be delayed for years to come. They are making amazing progress with the graphics, and I heard good things about the UI. This game needs more people to experience it.

EDIT: what a coinkidink, they are also fans of Kruggsmash. Very Happy

I have never played the original one. Bought this today. I'm kinda baffled that to build multiple beds I need to enter the 3 level deep menu, or hit the same combination of 3 keys for each bed Laughing after playing factorio with all the mass building, copy&paste, blueprints etc. it was very painful for me to build the beds for my 7 dwarfs Laughing
