why do they keep using the word "survival" to describe these games? isn't it kind of obvious you need to survive, like in all games?
Survival is already a genre and games like this does not fall into its category. nitpicking but this is just an action horror game, maybe "action adventure horror" depending on how much story and slower segments or puzzles there are.

This has been doing the rounds today. Makes sense, we could imply the commercial failure from steam's CC numbers which were very low. And these days, outside fringe situations, if a game does bad on steam, it does bad everywhere.

The huge cost of the game, which might include or it might not include marketing, is also on par with what was on display.

I keep reading comments regarding this where people are surprised at the massive cost and then throw a "this is sony type of budget" Laughing Sony most likely only has 2 games that cost in this ballpark, Ragnarock and Tlou2. Console waring and lack of info is preventing people to realize that 3rd party games have the highest budget because games are budgeted based on projected returns. You are getting more sales if you make a game for 4 platforms than a single one, so the budget goes up.

The budget was enourmous, like it says, 160 million. Thats on the high end for AAA games. Most AAA's are not reaching this kind of sum. So they were clearly hoping to have a smash hit. Square's expectations were not in fact absurd or unreasonable, they were investing metric tons of money, similar sums to this one, and they needed fantastic sales to make a profit. That's why that old Tomb Raider sale dissapointment, those sales were good for cheaper games, not when your game costs 100 million as their's were 10 years ago.

Guardians of the Galaxy also looks like a 150-200 million range game so that one bombing as well, no wonder they were in a hurry to ditch these ips.

I do wonder how aware devs/publishers usually are about sales, such as this game, or if their heads are deep in their ass / clouds.

i mean this is no joke when it comes to money and the future of a company, they must have game testers. Are the testers saying "yeah, this is a 9/10 to me, you're good.." or do they have honest ones that will dare saying that it's likely a "6 or 7/10 game at most), i have no idea, no insight into game testing.
