My parents still have lots of VHS tapes with childhood videos and stuff. We recently found a video recorder in the basement, in almost mint condition, so Christmas was a big trip down memory lane Very Happy The tapes are in surprisingly good condition (20+ years old), still, but the age is obviously showing.

I was looking for some converter cables, and there's lots of options it seems, and prices range between €5 to 50€ Very Happy
Does anyone have any experience with any of these? Are there differences in picture/sound quality?

Your biggest problem with those converters are going to be the software and drivers so I'd probably spend more on one that's better reviewed and do some research on which software to use.

If you don't have a bunch there plenty of places it there that'll do it professionally with copying machines made for it.

Those cheap ass China things are not great in my experience. If it works quality is alright but getting it to work with those flimsy cables isn't. I would recommend checking some of the reviews and get some with decent review score and returning it if it turns out crap Razz

Havent seen that particular video
but Technology Connections (the first video paxsali linked) usually has great in-depth knowledgeable videos.

Oh, and I forgot, get a good quality VHS recorder if you don't have a decent one. They're used very cheap nowadays and quality might improve significantly.

Thanks for the input guys!

I looked into a commercial service, they're asking about 10€ per tape, but I'd rather try it myself first Smile

So I went with the Elgato in the end, it supposedly includes a SCART adapter as well, it should arrive tomorrow! It's indeed a bit more expensive, but as it's plug & play, I can put it on my laptop and use it at my parents place without much hassle, and apparently it captures the best quality too.

My idea was also to try to clean up and scale it to 4k. I already got the isodemo of Topaz Video Enhance AI, so good to know it works good Very Happy

So the promised feedback: Elgato works like a charm, and as promised; connect the video recorder to the usb, and then simply play & record directly using their software. No options on the video format, unfortunately, so mp4 it is, but the output quality is very good nonetheless.

Topaz Video AI works nice too, but it seems the AI models for interlaced sources don't work very well, so gotta deinterlace everything first. From what I can tell, the Artemis Low Quality model seems to work best.
