There are so many limitations with the mod:

-When operating stuff you can't shoot, while in VR you can shoot and open close stuff.
-You can reload the weapons with force applied to it.
-You can open doors using your weapon barrel

And the list goes on........

BUT

if it was me, I'd be up for just running around in this world. it's so well designed.
seeing the environments and characters and stuff. the gameplay wouldn't even really matter.

like the leaked hl2 beta back in the day, remember that?
not really something to get for "gameplay" but it was still a blast to experience.
I view this in a similar way.

Yup. The game is a top tier production that doesnt come out very often, production value wise, and its the world of Half Life, so it would be worth it just to soak in those fantastic visuals. Nothing more than that.

The visual fidelity is mind blowing

It's not especially new. It's been around since the early-mid 90's (and before that too, but not really consumer grade).

you are in a virtual world in any 3D game.. VR or not. VR just have better and more natural controls. Letting kids play it for hours could be bad perhaps, because the IPD (distance between your eyes) is not made for them, i wouldn't mess with it since they're still developing.

not sure why you would play VR with other people around anyways, unless you're taking turns to play.

Never played VR for hours on end so far, i did get a new headstrap for it so maybe i will play NMS for more than 1h now..

i think you will get that with anything that you involve yourself with a ton - work, a book, but it's just temporary..

You get nausea the first time you try it. Maybe second time as well. And that's it. However, as cool as it may be, especially the Gunman Contracts mod, and even without nausea, it's not really a pleasant experience. It's cool and unpleasant at the same time.
Before getting it I thought I would play racing games non stop on it. So I got it and I played like 2 races.
It's a bit consuming for me, I get tired of the whole feeling/experience quite fast.

True, VR is a lot more taxing on your body than flat gaming. Heavy set on your face, isolation from the world around you etc, it's fun but not for long binges like you would a traditional game. You need to take a break every 20min or so or you will not feel well (even after getting over motion sickness etc)

You do get used to it and some games are better/worse than others. It all comes down to the movement implementation. HL Alex was excellent, i don't recall motion sickness playing it and remember doing lengthy sessions. Probably the best VR experience.

It wont be a good non-vr game. Its built from the ground up to showcase VR.

Edit: Time played 10.6 hours, and you have to think 50% of that time is screwing taking in the VR experience.

I have motion sickness so it doesn't go away for a lot of people after a couple of times. I do the teleporting thing vs. walking as I will get sick in a matter of minutes walking. But as for playing, I can't play any VR games for very long otherwise I will get sick.

Started playing it yesterday for about one hour. So far it was great. Very high production value for a free mod. Will continue playing today and looking forward to it

With the Steamworkshop-Downloader not working anymore, is there any chance to download this mod for the yarr-version?

Noticed a lot of stuttering on my last playthrough, even though I didn't change anything. Confused

Drivers are updated, AirLink is connected via same network connection.

Tried going into steamVR options for some gfx settings, refresh rate is greyed out at 72Hz Confused Confused

borrowed a quest 2 to try some vr games and finally finished this one, i am very impressed at how immersive vr is, seeing shit all upscaled to real world high is just mindfuck. between the games i tried this one is the most "game" out of the rest, follows the same gameplay mechanics etc where other games play like an experience so they feel like tech demos. vr is not a gimmick, and playing this with a non vr mode as is would not do it justice, in fact it would need more things to be added else it would not work. there is no story except the ending and the gameplay is done around vr.

the visuals and aesthetics is so damn good in this, the music all top notch stuff. the ending hit again all the high notes same as when i watched it when it was released, valve surely knows how to end on a high note.

feels pretty pointless cuz literally all the appeal of that kind of gameplay is controlling it in VR. buy vr headset, finish the game, return headset to the shop lol (2weeks up to month time in most of places)

The game is the best VR has to offer but still not worth getting a headset. Trust me I tried one just to finish this, I'd be completely fine finishing it with a mod for the story.

Played with the mod.
Feels like a demo version of a Half Life game, its not worth it without the VR part unless you need to experience the story yourself instead of watching the ending on youtube.

well it's either that or $500+, one scratch on the set and u can't return it. If you can borrow one (and clean it super well Cool Face) I'd say that's the way.

IF you care about money that is. if you're rich then you probably already have a headset or 10.

tried it too just to compare and difference is immensely. that feeling and seeing that prison at the end in vr and the scale of it u just cant replicate on non vr.

the mod seems to work great but needs more work on the weapons as they are too stiff

Ehhhh I'll wait some more to see how that mod goes.
BTW, just started Black Mesa yesterday and was really pissed about all the odd performance (stuttering and fps drops) at the beginning of unforeseen consequences.
Found out about the dxvk translation layer dll:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Black_Mesa#DXVK_translation_layer

Game now runs incredibly smooth using that dll to "wrap" vulkan around the game's DX9, highly recommended.
Also made me wonder about using it for some older dx9 games now, too...

There is a more polished mod out there but the dev is asking for money and hasn't released an update in pretty much a year

Watched a bit a video with the latest, full-working non-VR mod released a few days ago and... it's underwhelming.

VR is the only way to play this and have that 'authentic' experience Valve intended to.

it would be stupid to argue that VR isn't the authentic experience. However one can definitely argue if it's worth $500+ to play the only game worth a shit in VR then leave it to collect dust for eternity.
