Welp, agree with the sentiment that it probably was for the best.. I was kinda curious about whether the kid would end up slaughtering his mother or something though
But yeah, S2 and its second half most of all began going for a sitcom-ish route I didn't like at all, the series was loosing its main focus which was, as the title stated, "hunting" the minds of serial killers. A real shame still, as this was one of the best series in recent times, and the actors really nailed their parts most of the time.
The show managed to instantly reach its glorious apex by delivering one of the most fascinating seasons ever made, but it didn't really have any long term plans and the decision to try a more conventional detective-ish formula in S02 sadly left behind the genuine psychological tension and atmosphere that made the first season so memorable. No more Mindhunter is disappointing, though still better than having some flaccid watered-down continuation that brings very little to the insane table.

David Fincher Confirms the ‘Very Expensive’ Mindhunter Is Done for Now
Quote:
“Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show,” Fincher said. “We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.” Apparently, that math does not work in Mindhunter’s favor, although Netflix is willing to keep the door a tiny crack open. Confirming that a third season was not in the offing, a spokesperson added, “Maybe in five years.”
My wife wanted to start watching this. Seing as there will be no third season, is the current status at the end of S2 that the story is somewhat closed, or is there a monster-cliffhanger that will leave me longing for more? I did read the comments that S2 apparently was not that great, but I would like to know if at least the story arc has some closure.

If I remember correctly season 1 does kind of end on a cliff hanger so you should watch season 2 at least for the resolution to that if you are enjoying the show enough.
@bringiton: you can watch the two seasons without problems, the link that connects them does get closure but not really
They're structured in a very different way though, S01 is much more focused on tense psychological profiling and digging into the serial killers' backgrounds whereas S02 has a more standardized (thus less interesting/unique) crime-solving story.
Thanks, guys. Watched a few eps yesterday. I like it, although a slower pace was expected from a Fincher series. So reading that S2 makes it a bit more "standard" does not hurt because it means the wife will keep watching with me which makes it easier to get through

thats not the point, the director has a reputation to maintain, some of them do care about their craft and will make the best movie they can, it dosent matter that netflix dosent care. mank and the killer are audience flops, where mindhunter was one of his tops, house of cards. gone gir, girl with the dragon tatoo....he had hits after hits, but now 2 stinkers....
