Here's a topic I never thought I'd make...

I'm about 15hrs into Persona 4 at the moment and I'm enjoying it more than I ever thought I would

I see Persona 3 is currently on sale but people in reviews are saying it sucks as it's based on the PSP version. Is it really that bad in comparison to the PS2 one? Is it better to just emulate that? Seems to hold 60 frames on the Deck via PCSX2.

Does anyone have any recommendations for similar games?

Persona 3 FED on ps2 has:
Positives
*3d overworld
*Animated(Anime style) FMVs
*The Answer DLC

Negatives:
*you cant control your party members directly
*social links are more complex. if you date a girl the other girl social links get weaker.
*social links are limited to female characters

P3P: has:

positives
*one new main female portagonist that can form social links with male's
the arcana's doesnt change/get more in numbers though
* you can actively control your party members

negatives:
*2d overworld
*bad sound quality
*no "the answer" dlc

Mods:
*there is a mod for the ps2 ver. that lets you control the other party members
*there is a mod for p3p pc ver. that adds fmvs and fixes the sound.

so yeah the choice is yours....

not sure i've ever heard someone call persona a visual novel before Smile

persona 3 is a great game, no matter which version you play. psp has more quality of life and will be a quicker playthrough meanwhile the ps2 version has an immense grind but that can feel very rewarding to a jrpg player. i would just go with the classic ps2 version and experience it the original way.

now if you want the same kind of game but darker themes i highly recommend SMT games Exclamation if you want an easier introduction the newly released V is fully playable on switch emulators or there's SMT IV, SMT nocturne remaster - this being one of the hardest jrpgs ever made lol

Best thing to do is play the ps2 version imo. Persona 3 is going to feel rough after playing 4 though, as it is grindier and its just 1 continuous bland dungeon you go through for the most part, instead of the themed dungeons in P4.

As for similar games? I can't think of any that work like persona. I think there was something similar on steam called Monark or something like that, but I haven't tried it and haven't heard that many good things about it.

The mainline SMT is just run-of-the-mill JRPG with demons as pokemons. Nothing special about it, you just take out all the school-life/social aspects of the game and get the full grind experience. SMT V is a bit closer to persona I suppose, but barely and the problem is that it is the worst SMT by a lot.

Still, you do have persona 3 and 5, so that is quite a lot of game time to get through.

The first 2 persona games are similar but very different at the same time, so I'm not sure you'll like them.

And i couldn't stand P4. Dungeons are so boring. So dreadfully boring, and they get worse looking and longer. Yuck

Persona is spin off from Shin Megami Tensei. I never really played it but people call it a hardcore jrpg because how hard the games are. Also it seems to have some pokemon influences, I don't know if all parts or just some - you can capture creatures you fight.

While it's good, it's not really a visual novel (heavy dialogue) series like persona.

I already bought Persona 5 on sale but I figured I'd do the older ones first if possible

Guess I'll try both the PC + PCSX2 versions. Can't say no to QOL improvements

The 2D vs 3D change is just... what? The PSP wasn't that weak was it? Boggles the mind otherwise

Yeah, I second 13 sentinels, it was a fun ride.

Another one that came out recently is Paranormasight.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2106840/PARANORMASIGHT_The_Seven_Mysteries_of_Honjo/

It's short and low budget, but it was an enjoyable enough experience.

Then there's also A.I. Somnium Files

https://store.steampowered.com/app/948740/AI_The_Somnium_Files/

So yeah, basically the only visual novels I play are the horror/murder mystery ones.

Soul Hackers 2, Caligula Effect 1&2, Monark and Mind 0 on steam are similar while only the first 2 games might be worth your while and those are still not as good as p4. Id advise you to play p5

999 and Zero Escape are a MUST.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/477740/Zero_Escape_The_Nonary_Games/

Best VNs I've played.

There's also Ace Attorney saga, Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0

The Danganronpa games are excellent as well.

I was going to say... every game someone recommends (or that I find myself), Steam shows me that you already own them Laughing

These all seem to run well on the Deck and should keep me busy for a while

Thanks mens!

Finished P4. What a slog towards the end

Pretty dumb how the endings work, based on such little things. You can beat every boss, do every job, get all the good gear / personas etc, but it can come down to random dialogue choices.

Might try a Zero Escape game before diving into Persona 5

Don't have much experience but I remember playing Ever17 -the out of infinity- which had some really good story. It's a pure VN though, all dialogue with different choices. Worth it for any Sci-Fi lovers as the writer is also the one behind Zero Escape and AI: Somnium files.

Get the ISOdemo and patch with this:

1 and 2 are still amazing.
