Qnap has pretty poor security principles, if security matters for you. My personal recommendation would be either go with TrueNAS build, or buy Synology depending on your budget. Both should be solid options for home use.

Synology works for me, but my usage of them is pretty basic.
Just cold/deep storage of thing I dont want to lose, Macrium Reflect weekly disk image backups of my PC and my work laptop OS drives, and the occasional streaming of movie wife wants to TV over network.

Not sure what "inferior hardware" and "bang for the buck" means on a NAS. If you use it as a NAS, and even as a low-key home server, both's offerings are more than enough. Neither can reencode 4K on the fly, for example. So given that, one should make their choice based on interface UX and services offered, rather than MHz comparison of the CPUs.

Why the fuck would you want your Plex server—any Plex server, let alone a NAS—to transcode your video?

To expand, the Plex transcoded was terrible in the good old days, where SDR content was relatively easy to get right. Now, with HDR, DV and so on, it’s absolutely abysmal, often mistaking colorspaces and breaking due to 8-bit color depth.

I also never understood the hype around PLEX. I really wanted to like it at some point, but I just couldn't find it to be useful.

Plex Media Server is a convenient tool to have metadata automatically discovered and downloaded and works well enough.
Plex transcoding, playback, all the "premium" features are abysmal garbage. Their player used to be OK for library navigation and "Direct Play" playback. But then they rewrote it in garbage React Native and made that horrible too.
I use Infuse on iOS and Apple TV to browse and play media from Plex, and it's a good combination. Certainly better than any modern streaming app, that bombards you with "engaygement" "you may like" bullshit that nobody wants to see.

I used Plex for a long time 8yrs maybe, it does what it needs to do is fairly decent. I switched to Emby which I feel has a better overall feature set, much better UI and does everything Plex does. Very seldomly I use GPU transcoding with a amd 5-series can't remember, it does a decent job.
Effectively all my media is automated, subtitles included, finds foreign stuff finds rare stuff etc. All movies just come in as it's rigged to public lists, tv shows I selectively add.. job done.
I can't see myself changing this setup in future for a v. long time. Regards NAS I just built my own which is more expensive but it gives me zero problems and enough performance to run a ton of lab infrastructure on top.

thats what i meant w hardware. had a synology with 1gb ram and with a bunch of apps running (most notably emby server) it would always max out ram.
same price got me a qnap w 2gb and better cpu
but as i said i am not entirely happy w qnap either

So you paid the full price of a NAS again, just to get 1GB extra?
All Synology NASes have upgradeable RAM. Why didn't you just buy cheap laptop RAM sticks and stick those in, instead of buying an entirely new NAS server?

maybe we're talking about different things but i refered to entry level nas systems which cost me <200 bucks. and since youre so curious i returned synology and got the qnap instead bc the synology was NOT upgradeable. as far as i am aware NONE of the synology entry level nas systems are...
but i appreciate your concern mate

Well, you can add more memory and m2's for buffering. Atleast on the one i got. But I would like more options though.
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

@pho08 Interesting, I am not familiar with the lowest end j series of "NASes", but those are really limited in software (most likely, artificially). I was speaking about the DS+ series.
But apparently, that isn't true either. Some models have soldered RAM!

Ah, I think I understand. The Intel and AMD models have upgradable RAM, while other, more simpler SoCs have soldered RAM.

I am running a DS1821+ with all 8 bays filled, haha, so I am not as intune to the mere-human NAS needs as I thought I was.
