True, but its still just a real time cutscene, how many times will you see that timesync of a cutscene before its just a thing you glaze over and wait for it to finish?
If its a Realtime rendered cutscene, or a pre rendered one after a handful of times going "ohh look at that!" I myself, have no use for it. At that point its just a predetermined visual timesync.
Like elite dangerous, warping between stars. The first few times of warp lines followed by the star zooming in to fill the screen was "ohh fancy!" After the 50th time I go "Yea yea I get it, that star is a long way away so you need to make it seem like it takes longer..do I really need 30 seconds of warp speed lines to convey it still? Do I need 10 seconds of 'look a HUGE STAR coming at you where I cannot control my ship to still try to wow me?"
If part of the gameplay is waiting for stuff to finish while you watch, it's not gameplay. It's artificial time padding to make the scene feel 'epic' that only works for that the first 1/2 dozen times you see it.

what really annoyed me about this shit, is that it would boot you out of your ships menu and would lock the view forward
i assume most of this time was spent connecting to their shitty online services and they couldn't be bothered managing the ship state, because obviously no one would ever want to do something while being stuck in warp

Yea, he is having a 'trollish' attitude, but... he's right.
I know his channel since when I played Elite Dangerous Odyssey. Got some good guides for that game.
He's pushing in it too far, quite often. But it's still bit better than watching boot-licking shills...

the biggest joke is the atrocious framerate indoors .... its like they triying to render all of space outside aswel roflol as if the engine never has heard of line of sight

You mean occlusion culling and a lot of games struggle with that, especially open world games
You'll see games like GTA, Witcher or Cyberpunk ofc run better indoors, but never dramatically. Unless it's an instanced map that isn't properly part of the open world.
Mostly because the "open world" has to continue to exist for calculations even when you look away, not that those games don't try to heavily optimize the process.
But that's not SC's problem. The problem here is that server performance aka. "Server FPS" heavily influences client performance.
Not to mention an ongoing problem with the accumulation of "garbage", be it actual garbage or memory leaks that drop client performance through unseen objects that still require computation.
So a fresh server can almost double your performance in this game compared to an old server full of garbage.

Now they are ridiculous for having 1/10th of a game at this point in time. |
Went back and tried it this last weekend since me and friend bought it loooong ago and been on a NMS kick lately and wanted to see how other games like it are now.
Id say 1/10th is generous.
It feel like mostly a cutscene or short snippet promo video generator, or a museum tour of graphic 'ooh and ahh's'.
All the old content is the same very basic mechanics that early 2000's MMOs beat them for depth of quest content and complexity. And even stuff as basic as 'take box here' delivery missions that was bugged 3 year ago..still are. Boxes sometimes fall through the ground if you drop it by accident and touch it. You can get stuck trying to take it to a place you cannot find the spot to put it at...(and more)
The new content is just as shallow and good for one or two new feature smells runs. Then it grows tiresome and boring.
Think No Man's Sky, if you was stuck in only one stars solar system with everyone else, the space station did nothing meaningful other than give you a place to stare at pretty graphics, mining and combat was somehow more boring. Getting a new ship is a long tedious task of grinding time sync as the only motivator to do anything, so you can do ANYTHING else other than the 1 thing you current ship is good at (or just pay money for a new ship). But they slapped on some 'next gen' unoptimized graphics into it.
Then toss in some frivolous: You can sit in chairs! and Lay on beds in your ship! You can even climb ladders between the levels of your ship that serve no purpose other than we wanted to have multiple levels you can climb between.
I love me some tedious ass gameplay, and the more open world a game is the more I like it. But this...this is a good example of how to do all those things so badly even people that enjoy those things, lose motivation to login after 3 days

Star Citizen has functional ladders. So SC >>>>> Starfield
sar·casm | \ ˈsär-ˌka-zəm \

2a: a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual

Kind of. The main innovation for Star Citizen is the big ships you can run around and multi-crew operation (which is still not implemented...). We see more and more games that add explorable vehicles like Subnautica, X4 and GTA5.
But Starfield is single player only and it won't be a direct "threat" to Star Citizen. I think actually GTA6 will be the one to finally end SC's suffering. In GTA Online's last 2 years updates they added submarine that is big enough with couple of decks and has multi-crew roles (1 drives the sub, 2 others use guided missiles). Surely that will be expanded and improved in the next game.
Don't know if Chris Roberts actually realizes he is running out of time.

He's running out of time for years now.
But that doesn't seem to affect him or the development of the game too much.

Yes, because there still isn't a multiplayer game that comes close to SC. Starfield will surely drag some space fans away from SC and If GTA6 Online comes out in next 2 years with big ass multi-crew vehicles that will also take away many multiplayer fans.
CR doesn't care probably because there's still no multiplayer huge ships space game in sight so SC fills that niche for now even with its barebone content and shallow gameplay.
(And Elite Dangerous isn't much of an improvement to SC)

The SC engine and simulation are an achievement, if your a fan of technical innovations it's an incredibly interesting title. The problem with that is it doesn't translate to derp gamers and is ultimately a waste of money.
Gamers are happy with the same game, same engine etc, same AI.. some even play the same game for 10-15 years+. It makes zero sense to invest in better AI, revolutionary gfx, zero loading screens, accurate simulation of physics.. it's super cool if your a nerd or old when innovation/improvements to engine were key to success.
Still this ones a success but i don't think it can be repeated. They made their money with clever hype marketing and suckered middle-aged men into half a billion dollars - that's going to sapped by dev-time so at some point they will just go 1.0, it's done cya later and cash out. |
It has absolutely nothing to do with gamers wanting the same stuff. Because that's just not true.
Gamers want completed games, delivered within a reasonable time schedule. Not a single person who initially backed the game, backed it because Roberts promised a leap in tech. They backed it because he promised a game, that thing you use for fun.
He then took the money and expanded the scope well beyond what he was capable of producing at the time.
And here we are, 13 years (if you count pre-production) and there is no game. Only a badly optimized tech demo. Impressive, but not a game.

Since it's Bethesda, it may leave remnants of FO 76's multiplayer code in this new iteration of the engine.
