Even better, Unity expects Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to foot the bill
This trainwreck getting better and better
Saw someone mentioning that this is purposely done by the CEO to kill the competition for EAs Frostbite engine since the guy still has a big stake at EA.
Though i havent seen anyone using Frostbite apart from EA itself.
No matter what, the mess is done and wont repair itself !
Can't wait for them to discover the true meaning of anal when Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony lawyer teams will get to know theirs
The CEO sold a sizeable amount of shares days prior, since he was super confident in this masterstroke move.
You just gotta love how the world runs, destroying everything every person working Unity had built upon in a matter of sheer hours out of pure, unaltered greed.

UPDATE 15/9/23: The "credible" death threat that prompted the closure of Unity offices yesterday was made by a Unity employee, police have now revealed.
A statement from San Francisco police, via Polygon, explained that the threat originated from an employee who had "made a threat towards his employer using social media".
The unnamed employee who made the threat did not work in the San Francisco office, and it's unclear what further action is being taken. We'll update if we hear more.
In the wake of its hugely controversial engine pricing changes, Unity has closed a number of its offices over what it has called a "potential threat".

Return of the Obra Dinn
Beat Saber
Cities Skylines
Pillars of Eternity
Rimworld
Subnautica
Escape From Tarkov
Shadowrun
Pathfinder
Wasteland
In the early days, like with Wasteland 2, it was a bit of a turd. But it seemed to get better
Indeed, the list is humongous with plenty of great stuff in it. It may not be a technically advanced engine but it's improved over the years (also performance-wise) becoming the first choice for beloved indie isometric RPGs, strategy and survival games, metroidvanias/platformers and retro first-person shooters.
It will be curious to see how the situation will (d)evolve with games already in full development that won't come out until 2024 (i.e. Silksong). Devs can swallow the blue pill and accept the butt$ecs or go full red and switch the engine thus adding development costs and another few years to the schedule. I think Unity is done either way - even if the greedy suits backpedal, no one will ever trust them again after this.

Wonder if it was a disgruntled employee or one's desperate attempt to change public opinion.
Probably illegal to start charging for already produced games that were made under different circumstances. They probably aren't allowed to start charging for new games until after this has taken effect.
Can't just retroactively change a contract. The fact that it was free was probably well pointed out during development.
These things are planned well in advance. When they negotiated the licenses they probably did not expect Unity to shoot themselves in the foot then hold the gun to devs heads.
What offer can you make at this point? You'd be dumb to trust and invest your time with the engine when they can pull this shit again in a year or two.
So they genuinely thought it would somewhat work.
What the fuck. Hire me ! I'll do a better job than 30 of them for 30 times less the salary !
It's mind-boggling, really, it'd almost warrant an investigation with a few of Unity's freshly-arrived higher-ups selling shares before this master move..
And again, their employees and everyone that actually worked on making this a competent engine for game development will just get a gigantic stake up their arses while the execs will look for their next target to cannibalize.
