Sli / crossfire is a way to sell you a totaly useless, overkill, unusable 1000 $ card.
Except a 1 000$ card would have been ridiculous, and almost nobody would buy it. But strangely, people are ready to buy 2 x 500$ cards, although they're just as useless as a 1 000$ card. Go figure ...
There's people who have this urge to burn their money on useless things... But hey, it's your money as you said. Go ahead. There's nothing rational in it anyway, it's just a feeling. We certainly can't argue with the feeling that you have to get a 2nd 500$ card.
You KNOW it's stupid anyway. No point in reminding you. But it makes you feel good.
