that whole sequence is so crazy well done, got myself spoiled but once that scene started playing i just couldnt close it. thought this game was all horror then saw that scene for the first time imagine my surprise one of the best batshit crazy moments in a game
Hoo boy. I've been avoiding this thread since I was waiting until I have time to finish it, and now that I did I kind of wish I didn't!? ... Not true actually, but close enough. This was like 30% Mass Effect 3 ending levels for me, where the ending kind of invalidates everything, but not quite, cause it isn't just that it was poorly written, cause it ain't anywhere ME3 levels of bad, but it kind of literally invalidates the whole game!?
So gameplay... It's fine, serviceable, mostly alan wake like you know it combat wise, at least as far as I remember. I liked the world changing thing that Alan had in the dark place as it fit his character and the theme of writing the story, but I feel they could have done more with it. Still, the ease of transition and implementation was impressive. Saga's mind palace thing however was terrible. The whole board thing was a chore. You couldn't fail it so that only added to the sentiment, and I can't understand how people earlier on complained about the well fitting alan wake reality change bit, but didn't say anything about this garbage.
Alan Wake was fine as a character through most of it, I had no major issues, until the last bit, where they kind of ruined him a bit. I don't even think what they did was bad in concept, I just think it needed more depth, it needed expansion, and as such i just felt kind of flat.
Saga .... wooo, do I have a lot of things to say, but let's get the elephant out of the way first, since I was worried from the start with her being black and pushed in all the adds... Whilst I do think she was swapped towards the end, and they didn't even try to adapt the story or explain it a bit, I don't think my fears were confirmed. The reason I'm worried when devs and marketing departments push diversity, is cause they like to cynically use people of color, gays, trans, etc. as a shield for criticism. I don't think this was the case here, although I still think they race-swapped her because of some push from up top.
Whilst her being black wasn't a problem, a lot of other shit was. I just don't think it was necessary for her to have powers, I didn't like the gameplay aspect of it already and the writing around it made her seem dumb and incompetent. You could have just had her be a good detective and have her interact more directly with characters, actually play a detective, but instead you had this ... a mind reading idiot who thought it was just her intuition... They could have at least done a better job of writing and implementing her powers if they thought it was that important to have them.
I hated bright falls and everything to do with the real world, The forest areas were a mess of busy graphics that just made it confusing and annoying to navigate. The puzzles were too easy and as such were more annoying then anything. The NPC's around town were vacant dolls stuck in weird ass animations with little, or bad reactions to the MC, like they had a small trigger in a particular place and it all just felt awkward. It was all amplified by the fidelity of the graphics unfortunately, as it made everything stand out more.
The dark place was really cool and atmospheric, and the fact it had pretty much no NPCs saved it from the awkwardness of the real world, but by the end it did get a bit old. Also I hated the fullscreen jump scare bs. I'm a jumpy cunt and that was annoying.
I really want to like it, because it has a lot of really cool moments, really good atmosphere and music and it has a lot of love and attention put in to it. I appreciate that a lot in a developer, but I think I have to give it around a 7 ... I was at about an 8 half-way through, but yeah ....
I don't really regret playing it, I was entertained. I mean fuck.. the "We Sing" bit alone was worth it for me, and there was a lot of other good stuff. Control is still by far my favorite game of theirs, and I don't know where I'd rank this. I loved Max Payne 1 and 2, but it has been about 2 decades since I played them, so I can't really place them, and I can't remember Alan Wake 1 well enough to compare either. I am starting Quantum Break though, so I suppose I'll see how that fares.
I don't think the ending invalidates the game as some people say.
It makes a similar point as the Nightmare difficulty did on the original, where replaying on a NG+ will give more insight into the story and keep developing it.
I dunno about that. To me NG+ is pretty much always irrelevant as I cba to replay through the same thing over and over, even less so in a game where the actual gameplay is one of the weaker parts of it. Even besides that I don't think there's much to miss in this game. If anything, things are too obvious and the characters are remarkably obtuse.
IDK what to think about this game. For some reason the more I play and more I want to stop playing it and never finish it. It's like glorified item collecting.
im maybe halfway through, the graphics are amazing, the use of lightning, in really looks like ur playing in the true detective season 1 universe. but while combat is nice when u get some, this is mostly a walking simulator
game is fucking amazing, reached that stranger things moment with saga and was so crazy well done like wtf am i playing and took me back to that first game moment.
decided to play this game like re4 and did all saga first and then alan wake as maybe it will keep the mistery going and then alans part will answer the questions.
game is just really well done. treat the game as is and not what was the first game, as its mostly a very high quality walking simulator with some combat. the "cinematography" is just so awesome, very very atmospheric game straight outta true detective they really werent kidding
and for a remedy game the story so far is very coherent and engaging enough to keep me going
bruh that fucking alan wake musical part too...another fucking amazing moment, just got 2 amazing scenes back to back just crazy we get moments like this today it is so well done
without even finishing the game and out of all of the great games released this year this one is goty for me hands down
I got around midway - it has some great moments for sure (the musical thing was pretty cool), the graphics are very good. Ultimately the narrative style wore me down after the midway point, it repeats the same story points over and over ad-nauseum so an Xbox player can follow the story. If that works for you its a great game, the gameplay (well I guess combat is passable but not amazing).

It's a pseudo-intelligent game for pseudo-intelligent players.
If you read between the lines and pay a little attention, you'll notice that the game simply insults your intelligence through explanations, gameplay and horrendous repetition.
But since the majority of the players have the attention span of a monkey... guess it's the perfect game for them...
finished, really really liked the game overall, the case board did get annoying towards the end, i get what they were going for but you couldnt go wrong with any card so didnt really matter what you pick. other than this there are no issues with the game, im fine with the ending, left me wanting more. goty by far, so many awesome moments, cant wait for the dlcs.
idk wat u want me to say, come up with proper things to criticize. complaing the ending is just u walking from cutscene to cutscene its wat uve been doing all game. so wat do u expect to happen? pull an avengers endgame out of nowhere right at the end?
all the complaints are from comparing this to the first game....this game was not marketed as an action game so there is no reason to say remedy made false statements about it. its just some people thought it was going to be something else
