If only they'd add THE proper story content... they already have the canvas, they should joint the dots, invest into some good writing & scripts et... voilà!
yup i am always intrigued by these new shiny feature trailers but then i have to remind myself that nothing in this game's "vast universe" is hand crafted (i.e. devoid of any soul)

Same. Now I did get 200 or so hours of fun out of the game. So cannot say it was a loss or not worth the price.
But after we made our own content so to speak, of naming an entire region of space, ist planets, creatures, and flora in a naming scheme in a way we thought was fun/funny (after mapping out a games world map with planets as cities, different map regions the systems, and creatures/whatever of characters in those places).
We ran out of things to do. We jumped to center to go to other universes like 10 time by then. Seen all the 'ooh and ahh' worth seeing despite the 'infinite combinations' of random generation.
We got to the point we stopped at every planet..of every system, on the way to the galactic core and went "Nope just another XX planet, with X type creatures, just colored green theme this time".
SO many planets we warp to, to turn around and fly away from and not even land. Because we seen it (or 1000 variations of it) 1000 times before.
We got all the upgrades we need on ship, suit, gear, countless random bases built for the hell of it because we can, that we had no reason to ever warp back to.
All because the content is lacking beyond mechanics. Which is fine usually to me.
I prefer non handcrafted random entropy where the tools you have to use is the star of the game, not the content being handcrafted. Long as your mechanics gives me something I can mold as my reason to progress in my own way..I actually prefer that in games. (I LOVE EvE, but hate the player base. Why I cannot play it)
The new features in updates adds nothing really that can be molded long term into personal satisfying goals. The tools to make your own goals, is lacking. It's like they want you to do that, but give you a toy hammer and a butter knife and go
"Sculpt whatever you can dream of!"
"I cant, I have a toy hammer and a butter knife..."
"Introducing the new paper clip tool!"
"..that didn't help any...now I have 3 underwhelming tools."

I'm the opposite, i like that its just stuff that occurs "naturally", planets, biomes. You explore and you run into something that just looks really cool because the gods or randomness just made it interesting. It's way more similar to how it is if you explore and travel IRL, most if it can be rather dull, but you will very occasionally run into interesting places / stuff.
I'm a huge fan of generative-anything though. Love rimworld and terraria too because of their generative nature.
Generative art and music has been with me for the bigger part of my life too. Exploring is just so much fun when i know i'm likely the first one to hear or see something. Traditionally that's what's being an explorer is about.
Gonna look into mods next time though because i have heard there are ones that really makes the generation much better/more interesting. I'm not gonna pretend i think it's 100% perfect, it's not, no game hits that "perfect" spot for me tbh.
I'm the same vurt. If a game has 'procedurally generated' in the concept, and its done well (some are TOTAL SHIT) it instantly gets my interest.
But I guess it comes down to pure random generation would be boring/confusing. As in zero artistic input to guide it. Literally just random generation of 'things' like animals and plants and ground. It would be just a mess of noisy nonsense with the 1 in a million "Wow that actually looks like a cool unique creature..thing"
And since it needs some guardrails of what limits what can be generated. After hundreds of hours, we grew bored of it, like I said I remember an 8 hour session of us doing nothing but planet hoping going "nah, dont warp here. its a Scorched biome, but green this time."someone else. "Same..this is one of those Mega Exotic ones with the metal ball creatures and rings, but a pale blue color" and repeat until we just warped back and worked on our #(lost count) base for something to do.
We ended up finding the worst planet we could, with the worst heat temp we seen yet and fire storms every 5 damn minutes, just to see if we could build a base and live there out of lack of things interesting to do, or to create for ourselves to do with the small tool bag they give you to.

i like collecting shit so i can get obsessive about that in games like this haha, that won't be fun for many hundreds of hours, but i can have fun with it for 100h or perhaps a bit more, which is absolutely fine with me. I don't play most games for that long, i quit almost 90% of all games before i'm even 25% done with them.
I think i have 200h in total with this, but i can go back and play 100h i'm sure, didn't play it "seriously" for years, so there's much new stuff for me.
Did you try Riftbreaker btw? i just bought it and started playing it, kind of fun if you like base building, resource collecting, tower defense / factorio-type of gameplay.. not that its particularly similar to NMS apart from aliens and alien planets, base building.
I saw it, got really interested as it looked super awesome, but found it it was single player only.
Much like factorio and Satisfactory I only enjoy it with friends.
Only SP games I like is Cities Skylines, Planet Coaster, and prison architect. And even Cities and Prison Architect was 100x more fun with MP.
Cities it is a mod and not native like Prison got eventually, but I played cities 12 hours in per sitting with a friend for 3 days last week. To the point I was getting 4 hours of sleep for work.
I've always been that way. Ever since my SNES and loving the games, soon as I got the option of "Wait I can enjoy this with friends online?" on PC (SNES was my last console) I pick that over SP anyday. Only reason I play the SP games I do is because I like that game so much and nothing else like it that has MP, so I put up with it.

Yea limits me from finding enjoyment in some great games. If it had MP I think id be wasting too much damn time on it. It does look amazing.

Been playing the new update for 10'ish hours. Water is really nice, overall the new generation of alien flora and stuff looks good. There were a few times were they had forgot to save the texture with Alpha channel, that does looks terrible, just saw it 2 times though, but it ruined the entire planet since the tree leaves looked horrible.
Also it's not super stable. it's crashed 2 times + audio suddenly crapped out once too.
There's so much new stuff since i played it. The space stations looks 10x as good as back when i played.
