Naval combat is decent in small bursts
Lots of customization options for outfitting a unique ship
The Bad:
Much of the game is spent engaging in boring busywork
Traversal is a chore due to stamina management and imbalanced wind mechanics
Joining co-op events is inelegant and makes you feel disconnected
PvP events are easily exploited
The endgame continues the dull drudgery
ubisoft leadership was devastated (and likely rightly so in some cases) by metoo shit. You can bet your ass that in the course correcting they went full on wokémon.
Oh yeah, Ubisoft for sure went down hard and fast with such stupid hiring tactics and their overall direction, which I don't agree with at all either - I'm not very big on affirmative action overall, even though it can be necessary in small doses.
But it makes me smirk to see 90's devs pictured as all healthy, white, heterosexual males, when modern devs would all only be non-white (or if they are, they're something else too), non-heterosexual and suddenly overweight people.. it's just fucking hilarious to me, sorry
The other thing is that guy on the 90's side.. oh look, an Asian diversity hire ! Nah, that one probably had merit since it was in the 90's, I figure. "We're totally not racist, see !" It's quite ironic such an edgy meme would still be self-conscious enough to still integrate some of the diversity it shits upon.

I still remember looking forward to Raven's Cry, only for it to turn into a hilariously broken jank monster held together with duct tape and stale grog. And Risen 2 before that
Ironically, Pillars of Eternity 2 can be seen as a competent pirate game with extra steps, too - although it doesn't quite fulfil pure Yarrr-ian power fantasies because it's missing the actual action.
Sea of Thieves is very decent guys ! There's even a whole Monkey Island adventure !
But... it's a multiplayer game through and through, which disqualifies it for most around here
Yeah, Sid Meier's Pirates! was the last proper pirate game, which is really baffling when you think about it.
Sea Dogs was a nice attempt at an ambitious pirate game but it's so janky it's hard to remotely enjoy (think of it as Boiling Point-levels of bugfest).
Case in point, there seems to be a studio, BlackMark Studio, that STILL keeps on editing half-assed Sea Dogs' re-releases - the most recent one from January 2024, Carribean Legend (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2230980/). None of the artwork looks AI generated (being fed with Sea Dog's original artwork style) at all.. /s

I'm actually playing this right now and it's not that bad
Of course, it's still janky, arcade style ship battles and simple trading ecosystem, some light RPG elements, haven't encountered game breaking bugs. I don't know why, but I kind of like it. Wanted to play some pirate theme action rpg after seeing so many negative comments about Skull and Bones so I had to choose from either multiple Sea Dogs or Raven's Cry.

You're making me want to give it another shot , I even tried the re-released/renamed version after the original one was obliterated from Steam but perhaps with the patches that followed some tiny miracles did happen. All issues and rabid designs aside, I do remember though that the game was fairly interesting atmosphere-wise and its tone was actually faithful to the pirate universe, with none of the modern influences getting in the way. I mean:
I'm glad they offered a trial/demo thing. I wanted to give this game a good try, I ended up uninstalling it after couple of hours of play. It's just not good. It needs one more year to cook so that they can refine the gameplay.
I mean, this game is a joke. The worst thing is actually mentioned in the DF video you posted, that this is not a pirate game where you do piratey things, it's a pirate-themed busywork simulator.

"only about 850,000 people play Skull and Bones, including those with free trial."
"Skull and Bones has had its price cut from $70 down to just $29.99."
"the development of Skull and Bones cost about $200 million"
