Always has been. You live under a rock? No offense, man, but everybody could see this coming from a mile away. The only thing I am still surprised about is them still hanging on to the Xbox-brand. Gamepass seems much more marketable to a wider audience.

Have an account but no active subscription. Buy cheap India keys for Xbox Live Gold via key sellers for a total of desired months. Then either apply the free month GPU from your Microsoft account of buy one month of that from a keyseller.
Go into your Microsoft account, launch India VPN, apply the Gold keys to your account. Then last, start the trial or use the GPU key respectively.
The Gold keys will convert 3:2 to GPU, meaning 30 months Gold convert to 20 months GPU. With an active subscription, conversation rate will be only 2:1!
Note that maximum term you can have is 36 months, not sure if you can buy 36 months of Gold because then you might be unable to apply the last month GPU.
The Gold keys cost me ~70 EUR for 30 months (5x 6 months) and the single month GPU key around 6€. The last month is the most expensive, so the more Gold months you buy, the lower your overall costs.

if you buy india or something xbox live gold, 12 months is about 20€, which translates to 6 months game pass ultimate extension
not quite as good but still a good deal especially if price increases are coming
thats only like 3-4€ per month

I don't think they explicitly state no more stacking in general, they are eliminating a tier called Game Pass for Console, and capping stacking for that at 13 months.

The link at the end of that quote still says you can stack Ultimate for up to 36 months. It says the following about stacking Core (the tier we use to do the conversion trick)

I just bought 36 months of India Core, so should be good when my current GPU ends in November.

Be careful, it's dangerous to buy reseller keys and leave them lying around. You know how they are, they sell the same thing twice and suddenly you cannot redeem your key anymore. Any key bought via those sites should be used immediately.

Yeah, I considered that but decided to take a gamble, given the resellers have already put their prices up the next day.
