So how does this compare to the novel? I read it some years back and it was great, so I was excited to see a TV adaptation. Is it doing its own thing or is it pretty true to the novel?

This show has so much unnecessary fat, you can skip episodes 3-6 and a half of episode 7 and loose really nothing of the story. We have some characters like Amanda or the company owner and the scientist guy from always sunny - that have no fucking impact on the resolution. The main character has no growth - he has single purpose to be reunited with his family, all this journey he has had no impact on him. We watch some sad fucking boring backstories of characters that are not important in the end. Especially with the twist in the ending of episode 7.
People, have some standards - this is the reason why we have so much shit right now. This could've been 4 episodes mini-series. Especially that it had like no budget.

This version of Sliders could have introduced some more interesting local or multiversal threats.
Alternatives to the box could have been explored, some oddities inside the box itself.
I still hope it is renewed, not the most exciting show, but in a pickle, take the nickel.

No, I hope it won't be renewed.
I ranted about it to my friend but a lot of western scifi is - of course I overblow it - is like some guy getting stoned and having this fucking most awesome idea.
Dude what if like there were multiverses.
Wow, dude yeah!
Like what if I had a double?
Holy shit! Yeah, dude.
But that's it, that's the idea but no real thought was put into it. Boom, the books get Nebula, Hugo whatever. But it's really pseudo-intelectual crap.
Had this problem with VanderMeer Annihilation trilogy. This shit won Nebula. It had cool concept and first book was ok but the second book in trilogy was a total tonal shift, that become a story about a guy that had paranoia about his cooworkers written in almost Pratchett style.
Wow such a high idea but it becomes pseudo-intelectual mumbo-jumbo in the end. Same shit was with Red Shirts novel.
I like my mindfuck, weird shit but not masturbatory pseudo-intelectual undercook junk.
Dark Matter has in the span of 8 episodes, no character development, we see some alternative worlds that has no impact on the main characters. No real plot development. Side characters are discarded and nonimportant for the story. Anything about multidimensional travel is really not important, because it's not a show about multiverses - really. I don't root for anyone. It might end on interesting note but it doesn't justify 9 hours long run.
Don't renew this. Renewing this people agree for such low quality adaptations.

I believe it could be one of those spending the first season in finding its own legs productions. If the second season is more of the same I wouldn't want that.
But if there are some interesting developments I'm ready to give it another try.
Basically I want this series to become more like Sliders, than family melodrama.

Ep7 and 8 were complete show enders in terms of where they took the plot. It shouldn't be renewed and that's fine, an 8 episode show run is fine. You were right about the additional characters winding up being completely useless, the whole time i was waiting for a side character to have some impact on the story.
Spoiler: |
They introduced the rich black investor twice to the box, and he was never seen again. totally pointless.
The guy he abandoned in the utopia world, he could have brought him back instead of the mechanic version? it was an interesting use of the multiverse but had pretty much no payoff.
Why did he ditch his companion half way through? she wound up a being completely pointless side character.
I was expecting the side characters to have some impact in the story but they never did.

1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB
2) SFFPC (streaming via Moonlight+ Sunshine)

So... one could watch it as a mini-series without waiting years for a possible sequel?
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

Yep one could, it doesn't end with a cliffhanger.

I watched episode 1 and I feel like this is the kind of show where you know how it ends before it starts.
the "one guy doing it for his family" thing is beyond overplayed at this point, and multiverses were cool 15yrs ago. very tired premise.

Yeah pretty much completely agree. I much prefer the similar concept in Counterpart from a few years back (and not only cuz it has badass JK in it).

It does seem like more often than not, *someone else* ruins the original work. But as we see here, that's not always the case (see also Lucas, George).
