Go with the Steam version which has full Workshop support, the most popular mods are good and updated:

- Union Patch for Gothic (it replaced the old PlayerKit + Systempack)
- Ninja (required for some additional scripts)
- Gothic 1 Community Patch
- GD3D11 (DX11 Renderer, works out of the box - it's for Gothic 2 too)
- GRawInput (since the original mouse controls are all over the place)

Then:
- Union Advanced Inventory (it makes the inventory similar to Gothic 2 and enables the mouse for browsing)
- Union Thief Helper (it tells you how many picklocks are available etc.)
- Union Gothic Screen Info (self-explanatory - if you want more info/stats on the screen)
- Free Aiming
- Speed Freak (activates the optional x3 speed multiplier which is useful when backtracking a lot)
- Texture Pack By Artemiano

Plus whatever you like Very Happy

Aside from DX11 Renderer there's also LegacyAltRenderer if you want to relive playing with OG graphics for the nostalgia, but want normal FPS. It's not on the workshop I think, but it's just cut and paste anyway.

Watch out with the FPS- you should cap it at 50 or 60 becausd some fights glitch out if you dont. The dragons regenerate health too quickly and enemies can cast firebolt at you too quickly if you let it go too far.

I just use Union and DX11 mod so I can actually alt tab without crashing. I do use vurt's gfx overhaul but disable it in certain sections if the foliage starts blocking enemies or tanking my FPS.

Well, I'm currently daily driving an n100 based minipc, so high FPS is not one of my worries Laughing, but didn't know that it influences dragon regeneration.

What about mod load order?
This is what I have, seems to have been applied automatically:

The automatic order is fine as long as there aren't mods that override each other (the list shouldn't have any problems in this regard). There's also the 'Find Best Load Order' feature on Steam just in case, it's under Gothic 1's Properties->Workshop (requires the Workshop Beta participation)->Show Advanced Options

Guess that's steam version of LOOT then, thanks ixi.
Think I'll also try a bigger/clearer font mod since the default is a bit eye stressing on a 15" screen.

you use my gothic 2 mod for gothic 1? does it have basically the same textures, tree meshes then? i haven't played Gothic 1 since it was released almost.

I'm thinking i should maybe do either a Gothic 1 graphics overhaul next or i will do one for Chronicles Of Myrtana. But not sure, got a lot of Morrowind stuff planned too and it might burn me out.

Sorry, geriatric moment-was all G2 related.
I've only played through G1 once whereas G2 is almost an annual playthrough at this point.

Gothic 1 has workshop support?? When did that happen? Surprised

Edit: And Gothic 2. Hot damn!

Yeah, but it isn't what it used to be. On the positive side, there's much less to worry about now

Barely two hours in and I've already broken the game Laughing
Herek (https://gothic.fandom.com/wiki/Herek) has 1HP and is dropping a crude sword every time you beat him, apparently, since I've already collected 3 for beating him 3 times and sold them all together for 150 ore.
I'm tempted to continue the farming but we'll see Razz

I still can’t believe they’re remaking this. It’s gonna piss off the core fans and not like it’ll bring that many newcomers to the franchise.

Whoever sold this idea to the publisher has got some mad salesmanship skills

They seem to be interested in making it extremely faithful to the original, maybe even to a stupid degree... Gothic 3 and Arcania are both likely way worse deviations from the original games. Arcania was a much, much worse idea. I could've understood it, if the franchise was immensely big, it isn't, it requires the core fans, they must be on board.

The publisher (THQ Nordic) aren't idiots either. So i think this actually might turn out good.

It's going to be tough to reproduce faithfully. In terms of tone, the original was not only a fairly grim atmosphere, but it was comical and a bit silly as well. Plus most gamers playing this type of game won't enjoy getting their shit pushed in by wolves and scavengers for the first 5-10 hours. Or running away if more than one enemy attacks you Laughing

Definitely keep my eye on it but imo it should have just been left in the past. I hope i eat my words tbh.

I think after the success of Elden Ring and other Souls games people are actually more appreciative towards games that aren't super easy from the beginning.

I do wonder if it'll ever come out though, or just one of those games which will be shut down eventually. I listened a bit to the podcast they released yesterday and it still sounds like they're nailing down basic stuff like atmosphere + they said they will ask the fans / see how they react to it. It's been ~5 years since the demo.

Yeah, Elden Ring is probably the hardest main stream game that has come out in a decade or two i would think and i'm surprised how popular it got. But they did add optional easy mode with summons. In Gothic1 i dont remember how common it was that you could ask Diego or whoever to follow you around and kill shit for you.. but if it wasn't common i would expect it to be.. or just a complete rework of the combat and progression system which IMO would probably ruin the game. Been far too long since i've played the original but the sequel is a once a year or every other year playthrough for me.

I will have to listen to the pod.

That certainly looks better and more faithful than the appalling demo from 2019, if anything the ambience and core elements seem to be there (on paper). Unsure about the climbing or all the other unknown modern features, but I imagine compromises had to be made. Hopefully they're not too derpy, though it's early to tell.

Looks good. The sticking point will be combat. I dont even know how you would make a modern combat system out of the original.. do you completely change it and piss off your core fans, like they d id with Gothic3? Do you stick with the original and risk mass refunds Laughing ?

And on the other hand you have Witcher 2 and 3 which had fairly crap combat but were great games and beloved by a wide range of customers.. so maybe it is not so much a sticking point as long as you craft a good world that is fun to explore.

Gothic 1 did have climbing, one of very few games to have that at the time, in most games climbing was just jumping. But it also wasn't as advanced as in (some) modern games.

But yeah, looks good!

I took a look at that feedback .pdf that they made after the first demo, pretty interesting. Smile Second largest group of players are age 60+ which i was surprised by.
