Fuck, after the Back to Earth special I'm still scared to touch the later seasons to not tarnish the good memories of Red Dwarf.

Is it safe? Is it good?

The new seasons are on par with the last BBC season if you ask me. It's different from the Red Dwarf of old but they actually managed to go back a little more to their roots while the last BBC seasons were veering away. Back to Earth is best ignored and forgotten ... It served its purpose to keep Red Dwarf alive but has no real place in the Red Dwarf universe if you ask me.

So, looks like again there will be SD Web releases one week before TV date

edit:
the SD releases look passable enough, with some madVR
upscaled to 1080p - NGU Sharp High, reduce compression artifacts 3, deband, lumasharpen, vibrance etc. (still experimenting a bit with settings for low quality source)

Back to Earth was a pile of crap (and I'm a die hard Dwarf-fan). Season X was so-so, the set design was completely off kilter and they didn't seem to be able to get things working.

Season XI was really nice. Suddenly it felt proper Red Dwarf again. Season XII is continuing on where XI left off. While the two S12-episodes released weren't groundbreaking or top-notch they do have the style of Red Dwarf. I for one am sooo happy they're back and I hope they keep working at it and continue doing more seasons before the crew go into retirement.

There won't be a series 13. Instead they're doing a 90-minute special for 2020 (full feature) + three documentaries about the entire series. Seems it's the end of the road. Sad Sad Sad

After rumours were quashed of a brand-new series of Red Dwarf in the works, we were left wondering if we'd be seeing Lister and the gang back in action in the near (or far) future, but UKTV has put us out of our misery this week by announcing that a 90-minute special is set to be filmed in December.

“I’m really excited to get back on board with the boys from the Dwarf," said star Craig Charles in a statement. "I can’t wait to discuss Robert’s prostate problems, Chris Barrie’s hip replacement and have a proper look at Danny’s new dentures whilst they marvel at the agelessness of the Charles physique. I will surely require the services of a chiropractor after dragging these doddering misfits through what promises to be our most epic adventure yet.”

I think my expectations were too high. It wasn't bad but I don't think it was that good either. Had some laughs but I was somewhat disappointed. There was a release pretty much straight away but 1080p its not. Not sure why its in two parts either.

Agree. It was solid but certainly not the “best RD episode ever”

Way too long for what it was. This would have been a single episode in the early days.

Also little to no payout in the end. It just felt stretched out for no reason.

3 part behind the scenes documentary starts tonight on UK channel Dave Smile

https://www.reddwarf.co.uk/news/2020/06/19/the-first-three-million-years/

Quote:
Red Dwarf: The First Three Million Years is THE definitive celebration of the most successful sci-fi sitcom of all time. Over three hour-long episodes we go on an epic journey through space and time to chart the history of Lister the lonely space-bum, Rimmer the failed hero, Kryten the spaceship-cleaning mechanoid and Cat, the vainest non-human ever to be trapped in space, through the eyes of co-creator, writer and director Doug Naylor, the cast, the crew, and celebrity fans.

With the aid of the enlightening memories of these key contributors including all the main cast (Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn, Danny John-Jules, Norman Lovett and Hattie Hayridge) we start by tracing the origins of Red Dwarf, from almost being cancelled while still on the launchpad due to a lengthy electrician's strike, to achieving lift off via spectacular viewing figures which ensured the commission of further episodes with unprecedented speed.

We also examine the aesthetic of the series as it developed from grey sets to special effects, modelling and costumes that wouldn't be out of place in a Hollywood movie, and analyse all the future science that Doug Naylor and Rob Grant predicted and ingeniously explained in classic episodes such as 'Backwards' and 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse'.

On the set of 'The Promised Land', the latest smash hit feature-length episode of the show, we gather the four 'Boys from the Dwarf' and lead them on a detailed trip down memory lane as they offer us the inside story on who was the most professional, who partied hardest and why starring in Red Dwarf is the best job they've ever had.

Throughout the series we'll also be showing previously un-broadcast scenes and the best of the many and varied 'smeg-ups' of the last 32 years while leaving no kipper unsmoked in our quest to feature some of the greatest moments and funniest gags from the entire back catalogue of 74 incredible episodes.

'Red Dwarf’ Returning To TV With 3 New Episodes In 2025
Boys from the Dwarf are back!

Our beloved ‘Red Dwarf‘ is apparently returning for 3 new episodes (or another 90-minute special depending on how they cut it) according to reports.

The legendary British sci-fi comedy stars Chris Barrie (Rimmer), Craig Charles (Lister), Danny John-Jules (Cat) Robert Llewellyn (Kryten), with Norman Lovett as Holly, the much-loved ship’s computer.

We should point out that this hasn’t come through an official press release but was revealed by Kryten himself, Robert Llewellyn, on his Fully Charged YouTube channel. He said it was a “90-minute special, three half-hours. So yes, we are making more. I can’t believe I’ve agreed to do it, I’m insane. I’m much too old.” He also confirmed filming was set to begin in September 2024, with it being released in 2025.

I REALLY hope it's nothing like the 3-episode special "Back to Earth" which was shit.
