I haven't followed this game too much, but is it "re-imagining" both original games? I seem to recognize some maps in that trailer that I think are from the first one. Like that castle in the very last second, that was the final level of the first game.

Like Frant said, it's been done for ages. It's not just an online thing either. If you do the Nazi salute in Germany, you're going to get fined or jailed.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

I believe it's a case of "inspired by", trying to reignite memberberrian spirits whilst streamlining the original mechanics - the usual with consoles involved. If we're lucky it could still end up being decent, though I reckon it's unrealistic to expect the depth and thoroughness of Commandos 2, sadly.

Made by unpaid interns.

Awful animations.
Bland environments.
Terrible lighting.
Soulless.

Don't they have laws now which allow the usage in certain artistic expressions? Granted Germany is surprisingly backwards in really random areas, so they might not consider games "art" (even if they have separate funds for them), but I think this would be permissable, given the era and the fact we're not playing as nazis.

Well, it's German law isn't it? They've censored/banned the use of nazi symbolism in games since 1993, Wolfenstein 3D being the first game it happened in. Of course, that's only for games sold in Germany.

Afraid the old nazi blood will start boiling again in young germans? Pretending it never happened? Still disgusting, but that is my opinion.

The ironic thing is that that kind of mass censoring of symbols and ideas is EXACTLY what the Nazi's would have done had they won. I shake my head in befuddlement every time I remember these crazy German laws. Apparently nobody there is bright enough to come to that realization however.

Anyway, man, I remember playing this series for the first time off of a PC Gamer demo disk. Got it shortly thereafter and got my ass handed to me over and over again. Subtlety and precision of action was not something I was a fan of at that age. Very Happy Laughing

Negationism is punishable too, in Belgium. I think it's dumb, let people say whatever stupid shit they want. At least then it'll be clear for everyone else to see.

Nah, I don't really feel all that bad about outright criminalizing Nazis, or their association from the get-go in the slightest. Freedom of speech/association can suffer those limitations : tolerating the intolerant that's looking to fuck you over out of sheer principle is plain stupid, I've found with time. The US' current level of political discourse is the living proof of that.
In the actual world, you have to push your negationist ideas really far and in the public sphere in order to get the justice's interest to begin with (Twitter bans/timeouts and the such are not something I consider as the "actual world") - no, you won't get in trouble for merely disputing figures in a reasonable manner.

Once you routinely defend negationist ideas, be prepared for the consequences of claiming objective lies in the public sphere : what's wrong with that ?

"Censoring" of their ideas.. Damn, such a loss, and mostly a lie as well (you can perfectly read about/discuss the subject at length, it's heavily studied and illustrated).. unless you're actually looking to push Nazism on people - but I don't think that's the case here, is it ? If it is, well... Smile

You can turn the Nazi symbolism back on in the options, as previously written.
I do completely agree that it should be turned on by default though, that's the part that irks me too. I'd rather have the real thing be the default option than the redacted one. Nothing to get angry over to me, though Laughing
Mein Kampf is legal to sell and read in German, these laws have naturally relaxed over time. Such extreme measures were necessary to begin with considering past history and events (but nothing out of the ordinary, I guess ?), but man, damn these spineless and liberticide cowards. Rolling Eyes

Had to play the other side of the argument Laughing

SimCity 4 and The Sims didn’t use a prerendered pipeline, but a full 3D engine.

it looks good but i wonder how you can play it with a controller ? Commandos 1 was already hard enough with a mouse back then, you had to do many things at the same time.
I guess the difficulty got revamped and now is in ultra easy mode for console peasants (like me Laughing )

Well, making a safe, streamlined, accessible, console-friendly adaptation of that game sure helped them with their business...

/sigh

Look... I DID buy their game (Desperados 3), I admit. So I did my part to support this genre. The game wasn't as charming and good as Desperados 1, but hey... in lack of something better, it was fine...
_

I doubt the average console peasant can enjoy and appreciate 'harder' games in the vein of Commandos.

So these intelligent money-hungry publishers aka 'fuckers', instead of going all nuts and creative on a serious game like Commandos, pushing further the difficulty, innovation and gameplay, they simply... SIMPLIFY and streamline everything...
_

Just imagine taking Commandos 2 and pushing everything to the next level.

• full 3D environments
• expanded world interaction
• new gadgets
• new mechanics
• new locations
• new abilities
• combat vs stealth (see War Mongrels)
• replayable missions
• an expanded item system
• crafting and upgrading of necessary items

Btw, you know which indie game with a low budget does this? Partisans 1941!

Yea, man, I assumed that, I was just making a bit of fun. Wink

You are right, the game is janky and can feel rough.

But the ideas + most of the implementation of those ideas are very good:

• base of operations
• crafting + upgrades
• events that also happens outside your control (assignments)
• tiny but well done RPG / character upgrade system (skills)
• stealth is viable
• combat is viable

It also has a dark, serious, dramatic tone.
_

Back to Commandos:

Was hoping today's (generally speaking) moronic publishers / developers would actually take a fucking look in the INDIE market and you know... find some damn inspiration there...

But nah.
