I noticed I didn't post an update after my last post - I played the game for several weeks more on a PvE and a PvP server which had accelerated XP and harvest stats.
I did get several purges and they CAN be very very annoying. Basically, a ton of demons spawn and spawn and if you're unlucky to be the only one in the base, you're screwed.
The end-game content is impossible to do on your own so you need to have at least 2-3 friends to tag along or you miss out.
PvP is ... a mixed bag. If you're in with a good strong clan, you're in luck and can have a lot of fun. If you're in a smaller clan, you're likely to be the target for the bigger clans and will constantly have to rebuild.
A good tactic is to build a low-key base on a remote area. You then build a second temporary base near resource rich areas, place a sleeping bag there and use the suicide command to travel between remote base and resource collecting point. This mostly keeps your remote base safe.
Another good tactic, is to find a crevice in the ground, place chests there, then build floors (ceilings) on top of it. It's easy to break floor tile to access the chests but intruders will most likely not tear the base to pieces in case they find hidden chests.
Also be aware that quite a few servers don't auto-lock containers. I had my entire base looted because someone managed to get inside.

how do i change settings to make the game easier in single player on an already started game?
i googled, people mention server settings and making yourself admin. there's no such thing as a "server setting" that i can find anywhere.
also, what does it mean when you pick up items from your dead body and they are half transparent and you can't use them. i thought maybe it was something which was timed or something, but it doesnt seem so. if i put the items in a box they are back to looking like normal until i put them in my inventory. The game does not explain what has happened to the items or why they can't be used (i can eat the food though). Durability is still good.
There should be some kind of settings in SP that you can tick to make you admin. It's in the options somewhere IIRC.
No idea about that other one. Never happened to me and I died a lot. Maybe it's some kind of server setting. Maybe you can sort it out once you make yourself admin.

they were adamant they were not going to add mounts because texture/world streaming couldn't keep up, wonder what changed.

This reminds of another MMO - Lord of the Rings Online. Few years ago they added very fast horses with mounted combat in a game that has a lot of custom made buildings and textures were loading slowly even with a normal horse. And of course it turned into a disaster to ride a combat mount in cities and used enormous amounts of RAM for a 10 years old game. In Minas Tirith I still crash every time because my 16 GB are not enough. I never played Conan Exiles but I remember reading it had a lot of optimization problems at launch similar to LotRO. Maybe they finally fixed them? Or they just don't care.
