Nice graphics, above avarage sound and music, okish combat and writing, interresting world, servicable rpg elements, and last but not least really great exploration. Surprisingly polished even, especially for Obsidian, no bugs so far.
Overall much better than I anticipated, if it won't fall apart later on it's a solid 8/10.
Not sure why it's getting so much hate apart from the whole drama with game director beign total idiot by spewing his bs ideology. The game itself doesn't deverve so much negativity.
Negativity?
Comparing the game to similar games at the same or slightly lower price point, from nowadays and/or 10-15years ago and finding it lacking in scope, features and gameplay is negativity now?
Also criticism like this shouldn't be swept up under something like "you guys are just mad because the developer is woke", come on.
Also, barely 20K:

But to be expected, and IMO still better than failguard if both had had the same level of advertising done before release.

Every company that's being bought by some corporation will inevitably lose it's identity, creative freedom and pants.
It's not just this. Most good devs are build aound a couple of talented driven people. And they leave at some point or lose their drive and it's game over. Likely cause the managers take over control, the alpha's, the smooth talkers that don't have a clue how to make a game. It's inevitable that a studio declines at some point.
Like you see with Dice, they were always part of EA. But the studio lost it when the core team left.
There is still hope for Obsidian, perhaps Outer Worlds 2 has a competent team working on it.
One loses passion and creative drive due to the medium. So, when you have talentless hacks as managers that are interested ONLY(!)* in numbers instead of creativity / innovation / passion... you kinda wanna take a FUCKITALL® and forghetaboutit.
I have no hope and / or interest in Outer Worlds 2... The whole 'Outer Worlds' (1) subject is already a proof of corporate taint.
*numbers and profit are good, I love 'em / but sociopath management is slow death
"We're all a family here! You creative liberty will not be influenced by our companies' merge! You are free to pursuit your own goals and imagination. However... there are some small things to consider..."
1. Obsidian Entertainment makes Pillars of Eternity 1 and is successful.
2. Obsidian Entertainment makes Pillars of Eternity 2 and is again, relatively, eventually, successful.
3. Joshua Sawyer is the Director / Lead Designer behind these games.
4. Carrie Patel works alongside him since Pillars of Eternity 1 as a Narrative Designer.
5. Micro$hit has entered the chat.
6. Some fucktards at M$ considered that it was enough for Patel to work alongside Joshua for all these years and put her in lead charge.
7. Joshua is cast aside in the 'support' team and 'washing toilets' team. At this point, despite having an interesting nose, he is considered too white, too male, has too few tattoos and doesn't have a pierced clit.
8. Carrie Patel - that worked for YEARS alongside Joshua - was moved to replace him on directing Avowed.
9. Concurrent users playing Avowed on steam: 9241
10. Great suckcess.
I think these Avowed vs oblivion/skyrim has broken peoples heads when it comes to this game.
In the same space, this studio (or what's left of it) created one of the greatest RPGs of all time, a game that gets compared to Bethesda's versions non-stop. Which then lead to comparisons to one of their next big games, The Outer Worlds, which was also average as fuck.
The same comparisons are constantly made for Diablo vs Path of Exile, Dark Souls vs Nioh, GTA vs Saints Row, COD vs BF (and the million other obvious ones). How long do you think I'd have to go through your post history before finding similar comparisons?
If you're going to create a certain type of game in a certain type of space, comparisons are inevitable. Nobody wants to go backwards. It's also healthy for competition. If there's no meaningful progress in a genre after this long (Oblivion: 19 years, Skyrim: 13), from the likes of Obsidian, then what's it all for?
There's enough junk in the void between indie games and supposed AAAA games for the AAAA games to be this lackluster

Hey i'm no advocate for this game. Its average to below average at best in my eyes. Had they used the creation engine we'd have the same physics as oblivion and skyrim, but these below average developers used Unreal. I have no doubt in my mind that Obsidian has suffered the last decade leaving a team that is only capable og making a simple and shallow game.
It don't think the physics are the problem. The questing and story is just very avarage at best. Combat at first seems ok, but it's basicaly the same battle over and over against the same couple of enemies. It's not that adding physics will turn this game into a masterpiece.
It's fun to play though. It's a bit like fastfood. It's nothing special but good enough for what it is. And you don't want haute cuisine all the time. This is the perfect game when you are tired. Just do quests on autopilot, no hiccups or chance of failure.
I gave the game the benefit of the doubt but ended up shift-deleting it halfway through the second area, as there was nothing in it that could keep my interest, even with the brain shamelessly on autopilot
Way too streamlined, dull, and just downright lazy in terms of writing and (lack of) immersion. I actually had more "fun" with Mrs. Blandfire aka The Outer Worlds despite the dozens of glaring shortcomings, which says a lot about Obsidian's current state. We've come to the point where it wouldn't surprise me if TOW2 goes full-on Borderlands hurr mode, completing the circle of failure.

I gave it a shot as well. Right after KCD2.
Now, I have no problem with it not having immersive elements.
But god, tha characters and writing. So cringe.
And I loved Obsidian. Always liked it more than BioWare. Kreia, Mask of the Betrayer .. man. As a kid, that had a hug impact on me.

Fuck these activist writers. Bring back Avellone!
Indeed, it's impressive (as in sad) to see how much Obsidian's writing has declined over the past few years. It was hands down their main strength, as they'd take already proven frameworks and elevate them through meaningful dialogues and memorable characters: MoTB, KoTOR2, New Vegas all felt like the adult counterparts of their predecessors also in terms of quest design/complexity and general branching, with the trademark morality on the grey spectrum to top it off. Alpha Protocol was another notable example, the game had issues but its C&C-y dialogues and tone free from the supervision of virtual committees felt refreshing.
Late Obsidian was also good (Tyranny, Pillars 1/2), at least until the capable people were still in the company and their games weren't meant to please everyone™ yet. Alas, this applies to the modern industry as a whole.
Thankfully, even in these troubled years, we still get some rare and precious exceptions that remind us what competent writing looks like: Disco Elysium, Cyberpunk, KCD 1/2, RDR2, Rogue Trader (which I just started and have been positively impressed with). Whether these will remain pleasant anomalies or not I can't say, but my general feeling is that things aren't bound to improve regardless of external factors. Our best hope probably lies in the hands of AI, as ironic as that sounds.
