|
 |
Quote: | A recent study has also highlighted another potential concern. Paper straws assessed by researchers at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, were found to contain more "forever chemicals" – per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS – than plastic. These long-lasting PFAS can stay in the environment for decades, can contaminate water supplies, and are associated with a range of health problems.
The researchers behind the study say their results suggest that paper straws – along with their bamboo counterparts, which were also found to contain PFAS – are not necessarily a more sustainable alternative to plastic. The higher levels of forever chemicals they contain, they say, could be seen as a question mark over how "biodegradable" these alternatives are.
...
Despite their relatively small environmental impact when compared to other forms of plastic, plastic straws have become a case study for the impact a piece of single-use plastic can have throughout its life cycle.
Surprisingly, despite being made of fossil fuels, one study from researchers in Thailand suggests that traditional plastic straws made from polypropylene have a smaller carbon footprint than bioplastic (polylactic acid) straws, which are supposed to be biodegradable. After assessing the greenhouse gas emissions attributable to the raw materials, manufacturing and disposal of the straws, the researchers found polylactic acid straws produced more emissions due to amount of land needed to grow and harvest the natural materials used to make them. Polylactic acid straws have also recently been found to not be as biodegradable as was first believed.

I usually take 2 paper straws for my drinking sessions, cause just one sometimes doesn't survive till the end of my sucking action.
As the article suggests using paper straws is not necessarily a no-questions-asked better solution than plastic straws. Apparently that PFAS is a thing.
Oh, there's definately a Trump connection in this post with his declaration of returning plastic straws into the US.

Yeah, PFAS is no joke and highly cancerous. It's used in Teflon for example. It's still used a lot in consumer goods, for some reason.

There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

Quote: | If you want to keep using straws – or need to due to a disability – Nuñez suggests opting for reusable, non-plastic straws. Metal and glass straws are much safer and hold up to wear and tear longer than plastic, but even these have their problems. According to one assessment, a glass straw is responsible for 44 times as many greenhouse gas emissions compared to a plastic one, while stainless steel straws emit 148 times as much. Bamboo straws are better, but still produce 27 times as much carbon dioxide than plastic. Another study in South Africa found you would need to use a glass straw 23-39 times and a stainless steel straw 37-63 times to neutralise the environmental impact they create when they're made and sold. Fortunately, a well-made reusable straw will work perfectly well for hundreds of reuses. |

Another issues with reusable straws are: you have to make sure to drag them with you, you have to keep them in a clean spot/container once you did drag them with yourself, you have to wash them properly after use, you have to make sure not to loose them after use.

It's never been proven that PFAS are cancerous. Some PFAS are potential cancerous.

And cigarettes are potentially cancerous. Not everyone who smokes gets cancer. (that's a joke to point out working in absolutes is silly in bell curve situations)
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified PFAS as "probably carcinogenic to humans". The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also identified PFAS as a concern for human health.
While they cannot point to HOW it causes cancer, there is evidence pointing to that almost certainly contributes to higher rates of it. Potentially cancerous means: There is a connection between elevated levels. and higher risk for types of cancer. What determines if someone with indicators of the carcinogenic elements does or doesn't get cancer is still unknown.
Or in simpler terms: Scientific studies show that there is a higher likelihood that it does cause elevated rates of cancer, than it doesn't.
Have we proven it does? No. But there IS a link between levels of it in a system, and increased cancer in those people. We cannot say it 'causes cancer' until we can work out why cancer formation is higher in its presence.
Why, and how is what's left to find. It could be that it binds to other molecules in your system that are normally purged, and THOSE cause cancer by holding them. (Gasoline doesn't start fires, heat does. But gasoline in the presence of heat increases fires.)
Democracy Dies in Dumbness.
Sure, but you will quickly find that your extremism makes us unable to agree what a mental patient is. So it is truly no point in doing so. Copy this quote as well, or shall I?
