MGM & Warner Bros Starts Climb Toward ā€˜Tomb Raider 2,’ Amy Jump To Write Script

EXCLUSIVE: Get ready for another Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander. MGM and Warner Bros have hired Amy Jump to write the script for the sequel. Sources said Vikander liked what she was in Jump’s scripting.

She is best known for her collaborations with director and partner Ben Wheatley, who co-wrote several of them. That includes Free Fire, the action drama that starred Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer. Her other credits include the Wheatley-directed Kill List, A Field In England, Sightseers, and High-Rise. The films are cult favorites in the UK. She broadens the pool of female action writers, who are now in high demand. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons wrote the first installment. Warner Bros released the first film.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, Tomb Raider grossed $274 million worldwide, turning the Oscar-winning Swedish actress Vikander into an action heroine after a string of prestige pics and sci-fi like Ex Machina. Graham King’s GK Films is back as producer after an exhilarating run with Bohemian Rhapsody. Elizabeth Cantillon also is producing.

WME and Independent Talent Group rep Jump.

Was there any relation to the first game and the first movie?
Not that the game story was any good, but the first movie had a very very lackluster and no imagination story.

From what I recall (very little as well) the movie's "narrative" and the reboo's one were structured in a similar-ish way, only the supernatural elements of the game got stripped away and were replaced by some just as equally mundane realistic bits. Lara herself was also slightly less of an 3m0mogurl, but at the end of the day it still didn't feel like watching the true Lara. Razz Not Alicia Vikander's fault though, I actually think she did pretty well despite the shallow role and 201X-approved titsless nuCroftian concept.

I watched the first one, just to see. I absolutely hated it... what an incredibly fucking dull movie and while the actress is alright, I don't think she fits the role at all, but whatever. I for one loved the old TR movies with Angie, thought they captured the cheesy nature of the games perfectly. I didn't want really deep stories and a completely serious tone or whatever other people are thrashing them for. I suppose the TR games are not that anymore either tho, so why would the movies be... bleh...

The new movie managed to make the game story of the 2013 game being brilliant Laughing

Not sure why they changed so much about the story in the movie, because it was the worst part of it. The actors were not really the problem IMO but the script they were given.

Also I don't think they can copy paste Rise of the TR to the sequel : Tomb Raider 2013 already had some connection wirh ROTTR (there was already Ana's character for instance). But they still have some material left.

That being said, ROTTR story was terrible, it ruined the game for me...

Lara Croft is back. British director Ben Wheatley will direct the sequel to ā€œTomb Raiderā€ starring Alicia Vikander, which MGM will release on March 19, 2021, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Wheatley is the director of the action films ā€œFree Fireā€ and ā€œHigh-Rise.ā€ He’ll take over the video game franchise, which was rebooted in 2018 with director Roar Uthaug and grossed $274.6 million worldwide.

Production is expected to begin early next year on the sequel, and Amy Jump, who also wrote Wheatley’s ā€œFree Fireā€ and ā€œHigh-Rise,ā€ is lined up to write the script that will be produced by Graham King through his GK Films banner.

MGM also has pulled its Tomb Raider sequel starring Alicia Vikander from its March 19 premiere date; that film now is unset.

The MGM sale to Amazon probably screwed this one up just due to the timing. It did remind me though of how Fox had to keep churning out X-Men and Fantastic Four films or else they would lose the license at the time.

Series @ Amazon Prime now

Quote:
ā€œFleabagā€ and ā€œKilling Eveā€ creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who recently starred in the final ā€œIndiana Jonesā€ film, has scored a series order for her ā€œTomb Raiderā€ TV series adaptation.

Amazon has handed out said order for its Prime Video service. Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke revealed the news at the company upfront event in New York.

Salke calls the series ā€œepicā€ and Waller-Bridge says: ā€œIf I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ā€˜n all.ā€

Waller-Bridge is writing the series but no cast has been set as yet. The project was first reported on as being in development last year with Waller-Bridge commenting on it before.

The plan is for a project that will launch a wider universe at Amazon that will include potential films. Dmitri Johnson is producing.

Angelina Jolie was the only one who even remotely looked like Lara Croft while still managing to embody the spirit of the character. All the rest of them since are just box checking bitches - might as well not bother.

Ya too bad those Jolie movies were extreme cringe, she looked the part though. Vikander one was much better, just a so so plot.
