If you never played it, it's an amazing game. Spend the $15
But same-same after a while. But you get your money's worth by then easy. It's one of those "Wide as an ocean, deep as a plate" games. So for $15 and never saw the ocean? Go wonder at it.
IF you have, I don't think its worth the $13. The last 5-6 updates are free for me, and I didn't even bother. I've seen the depth of the whole plate bottom already. They just added some decorative patterns to it, but its no deeper.

From the updates it just seems inchohesive. Just a lot of random stuff thrown at the game. Does it even work in a way where newer gameplay elements interact in some way?

Probably a full game with latest updates. |
No_Mans_Sky_Relics_Update_v5.60-RazorDOX
No_Mans_Sky_Relics_Update_v5.61-RazorDOX
For these two updates, you will need a full game release, posted above.

So....
I tried this game ~5-6+ years ago and felt it was a pretty empty and unfinished game.
I downloaded the 1.58 version the other week and gave it a chance. I got hooked after an hour of play and decided to buy it (steam via kinguin) on March 30.
I am now ~70 hours into it and I love it.
Yes, there are issues and things I'd like to see overhauled/changed but I can understand some of the difficulties and reasons why such changes would be difficult to implement. Still, the game really need a lot more variance and uniqueness. The main story quests have good sides and bad sides. The three main quests have issues and some of it is a bit amateurish. The conclusion of the Atlas quest was a let-down for me and temporarily detracted my submersion into the game. I also feel that there's a lack of depth. There's an intangible feeling that the game is a bit "goofy" for a lack of a better word. I guess I wish the game was a bit darker with less "goofy" NPC's and less light-heartedness.
Hello Games is still a small indie outfit with a small team working on the game which explains a lot of the criticisms I have. They could probably increase the size of their team. That would allow them to get more skilled people involved to help improve the game and introduce new features that are either missing or makes the game better. They'd also be able to work on new games without sacrificing the continued development and improvement of NMS. They should never allow themselves or the game to be bought by a major publisher (like Minecraft); that would just fuck up the whole thing they've built up since 2008. They must stay independent.
They don't seem to be lacking money though:
Quote: | Revenue - (Increase) £39.74 million (2022)
Operating income - (Increase) £40.54 million (2022)
Net income - (Increase) £32.89 million (2022)
Total assets - (Increase) £145.19 million (2022)
Total equity - (Increase) £136.11 million (2022) |
They seem to have followed a very similar journey as Unknown Worlds (Subnautica) as an indie developer. Both are indie successes that have avoided becoming compromised by a major publisher. They were bought in 2021 by a company named Krafton (South Korean video game developer) who keep Unknown Worlds as an independent developer. We'll see how long that will be the case since Krafton is becoming a major publisher who've bought a whole bunch of developers (13 since 2018). We need more successful indie developers that can create AA-titles like NMS and Subnautica.
Exploration is the #1 thing that should be improved upon. When you travel a couple of million lightyears there's nothing different about that system. All planets all have the same basic resources in the same places except for deposits, they're basically just reskinned variants. They have different weather/climates but are basically the same, just reskinned. I'd say dissonance planets are the most interesting but they're basically the same as the others as well beyond their weird setting. The developers should focus on making planets more unique and making exploration a lot more interesting. There's currently little incentive to go to different parts of the galaxy since it's just more of the same.
The grinding part could be toned down. The global trading hub has the same old stock that is barely changing and has the same basic resources.
I could list other things that are either a bit annoying or could be improved but I won't.
It still scratches various things I enjoy and thus keeps me invested. I haven't even started playing with frigates yet. I keep hunting for more sentinel ships since they're basically the best looking ones and I've gotten 4 so far. It seems they're all pretty damn unique in design and I keep looking for one that looks even cooler than the current one. Beyond the design of ships they're basically the same with some minor variations plus the class they are. Apparently there are some boost differences between different kinds but I don't know what those are.
Combat is okay. It can be a bit frustrating. As far as I know there are basically no unique weapons, just the same basic variants to slot into the multi-tools that are also all the same but looks different.
To sum it up: I really really enjoy it but I'd like to see a lot more variance in most aspects of the game.
ps. I feel the pirated offline version of the game is different from the retail one. The progression from start felt a lot faster and guided in the pirate version. It also felt a bit empty compared to retail due to being offline but it's not really much of a difference since multiplayer is a bit lacklustre. I've seen no system to connect players through things like guilds or similar, just the missions on the Anomaly and the ability to chat etc.

~20 hours further and the honeymoon is over. Finished the story content and I'm asking myself "now what?".
There's nothing left to do except build bases, farm for resources, complete missions (simple and takes ~5-10 minutes) for stuff you no longer need. Ah, forgot about changing your appearance.
Multiplayer is useless. There's no reason to travel millions of lightyears. There's barely any reason to leave your system; it's all the same wherever you go.
They clearly lacked some things when they envisioned what their game would be. They've created a pretty good framework to make a game with but it seems they didn't know how to plan, write and implement a fleshed out story system. The little there is in the shape of short logs etc. isn't interesting in the slightest; in fact, most of it is just silly meh that doesn't say anything. The game just feels empty and without substance which is a pity since they've got the foundation for a proper game. They need writers with ideas, not more resources. Meh.

Missing out on Expeditions if running pirate, but it's kind of the typical MMO ordeal type of missions but can give you unique loot or ships etc.
I have a kind of love/hate relationship to the game i guess. I do find it quite immersive at times, and other times i feel i'm just done, that it doesn't offer enough. It's a game i'd absolutely give a 9/10 though, i've played it for maybe 300h in total, i often give up games around the 6-7h mark because i'm so easily bored + picky as hell..
Their updates are a mixed bag, sometimes they make me super happy, sometimes it makes me go "WTF, who asked for this??"
I'm a person who don't enjoy base building at all btw lol. So this game isn't really made for me.. if someone enjoys the hell out of that, they're going to have a blast i bet.

Ive got hundreds into it too, if it was SP only Id maybe have 10.
And I'm with vurt, I have a love hate with it. It has all the basis for the elements I love in games. But each of their roads lead nowhere.
If it wasn't for doing it with friends, Id grown bored after the first dozen systems.
In the end, the entire endless billions of stars multiverse boils down to: Gather ships because you like how it looks, gather pets that you can gene edit...that are purely cosmetic and 'do' nothing. Build bases to scratch your Sims itch to have a house.
All wrapped around endless reworded fetch quests paraded as storyline.
And beyond that, the rest is...flat. Fun...but very flat. This game is the prime example of the phrase "Wide as an ocean, deep as a plate". An each addition/expansion is "We widened the ocean" and for me it's Great..but can we make it deeper?
