Its my favorite of the TES games actually, i've finished it twice, Morrowind; never finished, Skyrim, never even close to finishing.

I do like MW more graphically and in some ways design wise, it's far grittier, i like that... But Oblivion has the type of fairy tale and generic fantasy vibe that i really, really like, on occasion. It reminds me of old 80-90's fantasy RPG games, it has that vibe but better, the quests are often fun and some are very imaginative. With good combat and if AI schedules aren't ruined i'll love this Smile

For me it was among the worst. The copy paste dungeons and scaling enemies were a headache at the time.

Reaction

Wishful thinking is the formation of beliefs based on what might be pleasing to imagine, rather than on evidence, rationality, or reality. It is a product of resolving conflicts between belief and desire.

Im thinking they've only touched on the graphics and some qol gameplay changes. No chance have they spent ages redesigning dungeons. There is no way

I haven't touched this game since 2006.
But what I remember was the terrible levelscaling and repetitive dungeons and countless demon gates or whatever those things were called. It's was realy bad...in 2006
This was before the age of the more modern open world games. Assasins creed 2, GTA 4, Fallout 3 and others. The whole Ubi esque open world thing wasn't even a genre. So my standards in 2006 were not high for an open world game. Gaming was evolving and most new AAA games delivered and everbody played the new AAA releases and loved them. People even bought a new rig just to play the newest benchmark game. In that age Oblivion sucked.
And the open world sandbox RPG aspect was everthing is had to offer. The rest, combat was even worse. The only innovation that this game had, besides good graphics for the time, was the invention of stupid cosmetic DLC's: horse armour.
That's the contribution of this game to modern gaming: it had the first cosmetic DLC.

Imagine how bad this game will feel 2025.

I never finished it. I have a few fond memories doing quests in the cities, but main story was just a pointless grind of oblivion gates.

I got stucked with the game where it told me to go to a light spot or something with wolves or a magician roaming around but even when i got to the place where i had to go then nothing happened

Early game btw

Maybe they'll kind of fix it now for newcomers, and make it more accessible etc

What ruined the game:

• level scaling (most abhorrent feature in any game / RPG ever)
• locations popping right in front of you ('ugridstoload'? omg FPS dropped!!!111)
• abysmal performance for years (until you could power through the unoptimized mess that the game was and REMAINED)
• migration towards the console gaming (UI, streamlining etc.)

What could have been:

• the best, pure, perfect, medieval, fantasy RPG of all time

I preferred oblivion's environment much better than skyrim's frozen samey hellscape. it felt more fantasy and it has some less cucked side quests.

level scaling was dumb but you can mod that out I think. haven't played it since the early days it came out so old man memory n shit.

I never found mods that fixed the terrible gameplay. Skyrim, at least, has a lot more extensive mods, though I haven't really found anything that's balanced there either. RPG's could use with a lot less outrageous numbers scaling to make them easier to balance.

They wouldn't have to if it's UE5, there are multiple procedural content generation systems they could rely on

It would be nice if they kept the memorable ones (eg: where you find Umbra) and then randomise / change up the others in some meaningful way. Even just the textures or SOMEthing.

I do wonder if every interior will be a loading screen lol.
The Unreal Engine side of it is just for the visuals so it probably will be constant loading screens :/

it's a "remaster", not a "remake" so i would keep expectations down when it comes to stuff like that. there will be a good reason they call it that.

It's not like those guys will go "fuck you Bethesda!"

Of course they'll bitterly smile, gather their toys and go home.

Or if you could interact with props / objects. In Avoked you could not even break or move a bottle...

Some next-gen engine... Laughing

I don't think so.
Have you seen any of their streams? The mod is worked on by people that seem to love oblivion and TES overall, while this remastershit also getting released in the same year as Skyblivion (supposedly) does might be a bit frustrating but I get the impression that they're still planning to go ahead and release what they have.

I know which one I'm more looking forward to, and it isn't the remastershit/remakeshit/whatever.

I am looking forward to the one with more chances to see the light of day.

Guess which one that is?

IMO, projects like Skyblivion are VERY problematic:

CONS (some):

• a possible exercise in futility if you have high expectations regarding the final result
• a hobby that you will treat like a hobby (meaning no serious / rigorous schedule)
• working for nothing (no payment)
• at any time the team can disband / people may leave (and have all the rights to do so)

PROS (some):

• a way to master modding tools & other skills related to game development (that may look nice on your resume)
• build possible relations & learn to work as a team

OTHERS:

• subjective & circumstantial

If the shiny remakemustarded version won't feature modding support and/or essential tweaks that address the mundane vanilla level scaling, then it's bound to be a missed opportunity more than anything else. It will keep the Gamepass people engaged for a while, but Oblivion's mainstream limitations are objectively too many to ignore for veterans. I still hope the Skyblivion folks can complete their project (..eventually), since that's the one with the most potential on paper. Either way, the curiosity is there, if only to reignite pleasant nostalgic berries Razz

i think SkyBlivion team has the same vibe that Chronicles of Myrtana team had/has.. its a tight team and they're super serious because many of those people hope for a job in the industry, but yes, also just very passionate about what they're doing. Never gotten the impression that they care about the remaster, but yes, of course they are wondering (like everyone else) which one will be the better and the more liked.

Another con is engine limitations and fundamental gameplay shortcomings, which a official version might improve.

Agreed but it’s a shame Jeremy Soule won’t be doing the soundtrack for Elder Scrolls 6 due to the Sexual misconduct allegations :/
Maybe modders will put his old music into the new game, that would be cool.
Maybe the Elder Scrolls 6 music will be as good or better too Very Happy
