Hi, My question is, is it possible to make a kinda url alias in windows, so for ex. when I type www.google.com in my addressbar, windows
auto-changes this to ie. 192.168.1.1 ? just an example.
The reason I need this is if I point mywebsitename.com to my ip, it works for others(outside
my router), but if I type it here, I just end up getting the front config page of my router. So all computers on the local LAN, will get to the router,
but from outside(da indianet), they get to my com, like they should...
Its a bugger changing www.mywebpage.com to localhost everytime I have to test a webpage in the browser, now you might say
I could open it direcly (ie. c:\webserver\webpage.html) but then php wont work, and thats what i primarily use.
Iv set up the router to share a single ip to all coms connected to the lan(cable and wireless) I COULD change it so the dsl-modem gives out ip to ALL clients
on the lan(and therfore get my OWN UNIQUE IP, and not have this problem),
BUT then for some odd reason, transfering between clients is limited to the net speed(not 100mbit/54mbit for wireless, its just like there is no LAN whatsoever)
wich is a pain since i got sucky upload, so thats not an option.

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts
there you can change static host lookups, just like you want. Just open it in notepad or something.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTT?? Seriously, that makes no sense  .. every computer has its own IP, otherwise the damn thing wouldnt work...
As for the actual issue, the above will only change things for your machine, if you want to change it for your entire lan you will need to setup your own DNS server, add the entry for the domain and add that to your default DNS server on either the router or each LAN machine.

Thank you, that was just the thing i was looking for... changing that file requires a restart I pressume?

Sorry I was trying to be as brief as possible. What I meant is that, now my router hands out 192.168.1.x ips (lan ips) but if I tell the dsl-modem to act like as DHCP then I get "real" ips, internet ips for all clients on the LAN/Wireless, and no "internal" ips(192.168.1.x) and when that happens, like I said for some reason transfering between clients on the lan, uses the internet speed... and that sucks.

Thank you, I will keep that in mind, but for now I only need to change it on my machine, so I dont have to change www.mysite.com to localhost in the browser everytime I have to check or recheck a php script.
