Devs really had fun with this one ( file is: CnC_Generals_Zero_Hour/Generals/Code/Main/WinMain.cpp ) :
// @todo - Yikes. This could cause us all kinds of pain. I don't really want
// to even think about the stink this could cause us.

They've released the source code for Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Renegade and Generals/Zero Hour, but not RA2 and Tiberian Sun...who knows, maybe something's brewing. It would make a lot of sense to give those two games the same treatment as the Collection, which sold pretty well.

Sorry for the necro-ish post but the dev claimed during the collection remaster period that majority of the source code for RA2/YR was lost in time.

Ha damn, that's a shame. At least the games are perfectly playable on modern systems thanks to the community (TS installer, CnCNet Client for RA2/YR) -- high resolutions are tricky because the engine doesn't scale properly, but using 720p or 900p + Lossless Scaling's magic to upscale everything is a solution that works nicely. It's almost like having a remaster anyway

Tiberian Twilight's servers are officially shutdown/dead/whatever ya want to call it. There's NO WAY to play it AT ALL, not even cracks etc
But i'm glad to know you enjoyed this great saga!. I should get back to it...
Also do not forget to play RENEGADE!. It's a bit fun tho due to confusing maps, etc, but a nice alternative

Areius wrote: | Finally done with playing all C&C games. Well, almost all due to EA shenanigans.
To rate them (all + expansions):
1 remastered: what an introduction to the franchise. Fantastic soundtrack also. Remastered was OK, but they really should've fixed the path finding. It's not just bad, it's fucking horrible.
Red Alert 1 remastered: didn't like the "in-house" missions, but otherwise once again a very good game. Also let down by path finding. I know there are mods to fix it, but come on EA... Fun to see Kane lurking in the background
Tiberian Sun - this one was very difficult to get running (and with some resolution that you can still see something), but eventually I got it going. It's quite dated of course, but also has a fantastic atmosphere. Quite the variety of missions as well. My biggest problem with this game is the stealth generator (and there's no satellites), which is not fun to find like 2 structures (including the generator) you still have to shoot down to clear the mission. Even worse is to hunt down that last harvester, which always drives to some shit place you never visit
Red Alert 2 - still works without issues on modern PCs, at least I could start it immediately. Nice QOL improvements and some new bits such as garrison structures. Allieds finally have some buildings worthy against soviets. Story not as interesting I think, also not as difficult as the previous ones.
Generals - man this was a bitch to start, I almost gave up, it constantly crashed to desktop. Some weird fixer finally got it started. Still fun to play this, most missions are not that difficult. I don't think the way to build is an improvement, especially for units. Just trolling with the suicide people is still fun. Miss the FMV
Tiberium Wars, ehm, Tiberium Generals. The game got a bit better near the end of the missions, but this could've been so much better. They go above and beyond to introduce zones, but then don't do anything with it. Almost everything looked the same. Such a shame For each campaign the initial missions were very bland. Map picker totally useless now as you can only select one other route once
Red Alert 3. Great cast, story is not too bad too, but the game is too easy and at times more an ARPG than a C&C game (especially the expansion's Yuriko campaign). The enemy hardly ever attacks anymore and it's too easy to just rush with the most powerful units. Again more a Generals game then C&C.
Tiberian Twilight: couldn't get it working, I couldn't get past the login
All in all, it went from great into:
 |
When you say play, you played campaigns, skirmish, what? Did you finish the campaigns? I've been playing the shit out of AoE2:DE this year and have been pleasantly surprised by how well the older campaigns have held up, and how good most of the new content is for it. I have really fond memories of Red Alert 1, 2 and Tiberian Sun.. RA1 i dont think would hold up too well by todays standards but from my memory TS and RA2 would still be fun.

Tempest Rising is a solid addition, derivative of course but it does exactly what it's supposed to. The campaigns are rather polished, though there may or may not be DLCs in the future, so waiting a bit is probably wise.
My favourite Command & Conquer clone is Act of War: Direct Action, which is essentially Generals with more personality and a Calancyian story with cheesy B-movie vibes. It's fully playable using the widescreen patch from PCGW/moddb. High Treason is good too, though it requires an additional fix since the game never received an official patch. Another quality clone and quite underrated from back in the day was Dark Reign: The Future of War (the sequel..not so much).

@ixigia: Act oif War was nice, only downside i had was the limited amount of resources.
Winchester / I see Tangos Remember still the Airunits or the long range subs/rocketlaunchers from the dlc High Treason.
