I bet the devs say nowadays: "You know what's dope now, 4-bit unreadable graphics!".

Yeah.. Let's make pixelated graphic, but let's make it ugly to make it "cool" and push nostalgia strings.
The difference between pixel graphic vs pixel mess... This one is a mess:/

Hey dont be so hard the little console eunuchs, they need time to aim their lil vibratin thumbstick.
Thankfully it is possible to disable the silly retro(tm) filter from the options, looks much better and one can actually distinguish all the angry cultists from the pixelated backgrounds. Seems decent from the Steam demo though, meaty and with a solid atmosphere that was obviously influenced by Blood. I'm not too convinced by the level design, but it's early to tell.
Definitely a buy for me, played through the demo twice and loved it. Still think the enemy sfx are too wonky and dont understand what the graphics filter is trying to emulate but i dig the atmosphere.
edit: best fps i've played in a while.. amazing soundtrack too
yeah that's why I'm passing on this one. I find with Retro shooters you have to at least match or exceed the quality of the classics. Like iron fury is better than virtually all classic build engine games, there are a few like Wrath, Prodeus (outside enemies) while Retro look and feel better than quake 2.
You have to exceed duke3d for build engine.
or
quake 2 for low poly games, otherwise I'd just play Duke or Quake2.
I know people like them but Dusk and Amid evil don't look and play better than quake2.
Reading some interviews it's clear he used the "retro" style to cover up his lack of artistic skill and he wasn't shy about saying so.
Still the best FPS i've played in a long time. Probably since Ion Fury and this one didn't drag on as long as that did. If you have a good sound system it's definitely worth playing for that as well, some real bangers on the ost. And 10 bucks is a steal.. that's less than fast food costs these days
Great game, and the walktroughs on YT is more like speedruns, and one of them isnt even "full game" as it claims.
My clear time was above 3 hours. And for first chapter its pretty decent.
I love the weapons, phase, art style, level design, atmosphere and upgrades. Easily top modern retro shooter for me. And iv pretty much played them all.

I really hate modern retro-pixel games. Why are they even made? They couldn't find a graphics artist? Nostalgia? Bleh.
It's really different from modern shooters, especially the level design in these kind of games. I find it fun to come back to it, more than i thought i would.
it's existence is just as welcome as e.g anime vs western cartoons, just very different styles / vibes.. Nostalgia isn't all there is to it.
I completed it as well, it was rather short but entertaining in its crescendo that leaves you wanting for more. The gunplay with meaty gory feedback alongside the rural atmosphere + moody music is a combo that definitely works well. It will never be a good-looking game but as already mentioned, turning the sepia filter off improves the visibility making the sprites look a bit less jarring.
Although the occult style and enemies resemble Blood's, both the actual design of the levels and related loop are completely different: most maps are large with pseudo-immersive sim-like elements added to them, key-hunting is minimal, and (unlike Blood) there's little strategy involved with the various encounters. It's an interesting approach, simplistic perhaps but I'm curious to see where the next chapter(s) will lead to. Thank Cerberus that in such a creatively defunct tripe-A industry we still have indies that are keeping the genre afloat.
