They had no choice. It was either Epic or no game at all. The costs were about 56M€ if I'm correct. You don't get such investment from everywhere if you want even a bit of creative freedom. Projects like Alan Wake II ('twin peaks', gameplay...) can be extremely risky and turn out to be a total flops. |
Which is why they made Control: Resonant. It's clearly aimed for a bigger audience; the couch-potatoes that only want to sit down and relax a bit with mindless hack'n'slash with ridiculously oversized weapons. It's pissing in the face of the real fans of Control.
I do get it though. They had losses in 2023 and 2024 and need to make something that will generate money. I'm just sad that they decided to fuck with Control instead of creating a spin-off hack'n'slash game that wasn't an actual sequel. Imagine if Bethesda had made Fallout 4 as a Doom-shooter. It's the same thing. imho

Maybe if Weak Anal 2 ran on more than the highest end machines, it wouldn't have the terrible name it has.
About Fallout, remember how everyone called Fallout 3 "Oblivion with guns"?

The current "blurb" about Devil May Control: Resonant straight from Remedy
"The CONTROL universe continues in 2026 – the sequel to CONTROL is coming next year. In CONTROL Resonant, you play as Dylan Faden, in a Manhattan taken over by paranatural forces that want its annihilation. Dylan is tasked by his former captors, the FBC, to fight for humanity's survival and find the missing Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, his sister Jesse Faden. To do this, he wields a shapeshifting weapon, the Aberrant, which takes many forms that you can switch between to best your enemies.
CONTROL Resonant is a direct sequel to CONTROL, an open-ended action-adventure RPG coming out in 2026. We'll be talking about it more in the upcoming months."
Nothing new besides the fact that you're trying to find Jesse, not fight against her or kill her (at least to me). The scene in the trailer that looked like Jesse killed Dylan by stabbing him with that stick was her binding "the Aberrant" to Dylan, thus giving him his own personal OoPs weapon.
I'm still extremely sceptical. If I want to play a modern hack'n'slash a'la DMC I'd play Returnal (which I've finished). I loved Control because of it's world building, exploration, story, reality-bending insanity and overall design. After I maxed out levitate and launch while having some good upgrades to my service weapon I wasn't bothered by the combat gameplay. Traversing the motel, finding the weirdest altered items, following the story.. that's what really made Control a GOTY for me.
I loved the trailer... until they showed actual gameplay footage. I mean... wtf.. a massive hammer/sword/weapon.. like in the original FF7 and almost every jap-inspired game since then... That definitely put a banana in my tailpipe.
(bonus for recognising that last throwback).
I do believe it will sell really well based on it's console'y button-smashing gameplay style presented. It's what the lazy console couch bums love after all.
Perhaps I can hope for a proper Control game sometime in the 2030's.... :/
ps. I haven't written this off completely.. yet. I'll still try it out and see what it offers besides massive-weapon melee button-smashing combat gameplay.

At least they didn't add "Saga" to the title, like some other highfalutin derpelopers (Hellblade 2).
