Aye, the path has been paved already for the ultimate jump into the cloud-y hole of nothingness, though it's not unlikely that life will still find a way(tm) despite everything. Or at least that's what I hope, as I've never paid for any gaming service and definitely plan to keep it that way in the futhurr envisioned by the giant greedy green pears.

I liked the bit about those having a lot of DDR4/DDR5 before all this shit are basically sitting on a huge investment that can be sold for several times the price paid at the time. Laughing

I am still running a 2017 AM4 mobo with a 5800X3D and 32Gig RAM. I don't feel the need to upgrade at all and it seems like I will keep this system for another 3 years at least. By far the longest I had a mobo ever.

And the 9070XT is perfectly fine/slightly overkill for the games I play at 3440x1440@100Hz. Also thanks to FSR4.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Me postponing my planned early 2025 new rig cause I believed the mid range GPU's lacked VRAM Sad .

It's the covid GPU shortage all over. And GPU prices have never fully recovered since then.
I think the industry is just exploiting the "shortage" to push for higher margins. It's an oligopoly. It's not that there isnt a shortage in production capacity, but they are not in a hurry to fix it. And I know it takes a lot of time to increase production capacitiy and those machines are in short supply also. But I'm also pretty certain if the industry realy wanted, they could have planned ahead and supply would be better. Ram suppliers learned from Nvidia how to play this game.

And while Moore's law is dead and compute isn't improving all that lot like it used to, the irony is that in this era of slow innovation the stuff is getting more expensive every year.
Such a contrast with the start of the century when hardware was cheap (although outdated allready the day you bought it)

Imho the end of PC gaming. Things will stay overpriced for a long time. When ram prices normalize they'll find something new to rip you off.
The semi industry will eventualy collaps and chips will become a comodity cause they can't maintain those absurd margins given the slow speed of innovation, but this will not happen in the near future.

Nigga please.
All it takes is for the new chinese AI iteration to leapfrog whatever the retarded americans are doing at a fraction of the cost/resources and both demand and prices will tumble down, forcing that greedy bastard Jensen to sell his leather jacket collection. Or hopefully needing to boil and eat them in order to survive Very Happy

But then things will be fine for 1-3 years and something new is gonna happen. For instance: if humanoid robots are gonna be a thing, guess what will happen with the the supply of GPU’s. High end pc gaming is gonna be a thing of the past cause it’s becomming to expensive. It’s gonna be the steam box kind of hardware that we all will be using. Still fine imho.

Not a big issue. Those things will be too costly for mass production for a long time.

50k? To replace 4fte?
And perhaps other things are gonna happen. No one has forseen the ram shortage cause by the openai bubble and the gpu shortage during the crypto boom.
But production capacity in the semi industry will be kept tight. Any new inovation will fuck up supply.

Sorry but I can't see how humanoid robots going mainstream will somehow affect the GPU supply.

This whole "ram shortage" is just a scam and excuse by the big companies to hike up the prices tenfold and then 1 year later we settle at only 5x thinking its "cheap" now...

Happens all the time, everywhere, with everything.

According to industry sources on the 30th, AMD is expected to raise the prices of some GPUs starting in January next year, and Nvidia starting in February next year.

the RTX 5090, was released at the beginning of this year at $1,999 (KRW 2.86 million), but it is expected to soar to $5,000 (KRW 7.15 million) next year.

Both companies are reportedly planning to continue raising GPU prices every month going forward. It's highly likely that the price increases will extend across their entire product lineup, encompassing not only consumer GPUs but also GPUs for AI data centers and servers.

An industry insider explained, "The average proportion of memory in the overall GPU manufacturing cost has recently exceeded 80%."

Global market research firm Counterpoint predicts that memory prices will rise by an additional 40% by the second quarter of next year. Some analysts predict that the price increase will be even steeper next year, with general-purpose memory prices potentially rising several times over.

Yeah... Sell fewer GPU's for more money. Nvidia is just shitting and pissing on us now.
