The first game had its issues, but it also did not take itself too seriously which I'm wondering if that won't be one of the major issues with the sequel.
And the level design, everything is a corridor with a sprawling maze-like layout with some shortcuts spread around. And then it just gets larger and more irritating to navigate through.
Not the worst Souls-like I've played, but Bandai has a recurring thing about having a lot of ides and not enough resources to really pull it off so its a bit of a mish-mash of ideas and odd decisions.
EDIT: They aren't school students at least, but there's always a bloody hot spring for one reason or another.
Then its either positive vibes, cheerfulness or inspiring speeches.
Or the most trauma and gore that can be fitted within the stringent ratings system criteria.
EDIT: And the game engine, physics system, certain bits of anatomy affected by said physics and why coding things to framerate is wrong, even if its funny.
And unfortunate for Bandai, they already drove their Sword Art video game license into repetitive low-quality trash.
But it probably won't stop them from trying again utilizing Unreal Engine 5 and new platforms like the Switch 2
There are some good ideas in these games but overall they feel lost in time, like a decade or so and there are decidedly better games now and better games being inspired by the same games that Bandai are trying to draw ideas from.
Which is perhaps an issue all of its own, there's soo many games now calling themselves "Souls inspired" or "Souls like" trying for quick easy sales.
EDIT: Kazan: First Berserker is perhaps the closest competitor, wasn't bad if the anime aesthetics doesn't put people off from trying it.
Nioh 3 is also coming out, Code Vein has a lot of mechanics and players can switch freely between what they want to use, but the variety and complexity in the Nioh games are on a whole different level, although so is the learning curve and the game truly begins after you've completed it once and can start working on actual itemization and advanced character builds.
Scarlet Nexus is the one that stood out a bit more for me, not perfect either but entertaining for what it was. Of the JRPG style games that Bandai Namco has put out.
Tales series could be good but is also one of those that still feels like they are hindered by not enough development time or a lack of funding.
More remakes of those are on the way though, Tales of Arise appears to have done well enough to keep the series going at least.
I also compare Code Vein to Dark Souls a lot since so much feels familiar, but the blood codes and companions are some original elements, that I'll give credit for.
The memories aren't great but its not audio log collectibles either, I do have a dislike for forced slow-walk segments however so there is also that.
But you do get a slight visual representation, or other rewards, from these. Its not just audio playback and much of its even story related instead of random background info or obscure attempts are writing in lore.
There's the obligatory swamp level as well but its more unique and is not really comparable to either Poison Swamps of Demons Souls or Blight Town of Dark Souls.
This, this is just a mess of pathways and dead-ends.
At least there's plenty of shortcuts and several fast travel sections, after you've unlocked them.
But as the comments indicate its divisive, some absolutely love the place and what the developers came up with here.
Gonna patientbear it with all the sensitivity censorship for the west. I don't really give a fuck what the costumes look like, but this shit drives me up the wall
This is the worst souls like i have ever played. Its not too difficult as i rarely die, but it's made so frustrating. All bosses constantly input read your commands. Meaning when you heal, they fucking animation cancel and half second jump in your face or similar. You do not have time to heal unless something throws the boss out of whack. You heal, it starts comboing, you try to use one of your abilities, boss starts comboing. So many times i've just started running around hoping my ai buddy takes aggro and lay it on the boss when that happens. For not really dying much to bosses, they are truly unfun.
