The core focus seems to have been cut-scenes, graphics, voice acting: superficial stuff that a small dev normally shouldn't focus on for a RPG. Though they absolutely made a commercial success because they made a cookie cutter RPG which appeals to the masses but for most veterans (a far smaller group of course) its just shit. if you look on dedicated RPG forums, MANY people there are not too impressed.
I am disappointed because i loved the intro and i really liked the combat and graphics, but the "comedy", characters, the story, the focus on long cut scenes with cringe character interactions, jesus chist, i have no idea how people can stand it. Also its just overall non immersive, like if you camp when you are in a large underground area you are suddenly camping in a forest. they did not care about attention to detail, like at all.
Their first game, is way, way ahead of BG3, in MANY ways (where it matters, like attention to details, immersion), and that was with like 1% of the budget and with far less people.
So the "oh, give them a break, its indie, they cant do that" is total BS. they just didnt give a shit since it worked for DoS, they focused on the more superficial stuff like graphics, cutscenes instead.

I disagree games with alot of higher budget and dev time like Starfield (not being a crpg i know)are far worse and by a supposedly huge legendary studio.
Attention to detail is ofc a good thing but everything has its limits.
The superficial stuff you mention aren't bad things.
BG3 is a step up from DOS 2 and maybe their next game will be betetr because they learned some lessons from it.
I remember how Sven talked about the cube that you get with shadowheart and what an headache it was to not make it break the game. "What happens if you kill shadowheart and take the cube? What if you dont take it? What if you throw it away etc." They had to kind of totally focus on this matter and didnt except it being such a headache.
You might disagree but there are many good CRPGS like Rogue Trader, Wrath of the Righteous, Solasta (soon Solasta 2) or little "gems" devs still work on like Black Geyser. Everyone of them has positives and negatives. You cant just except it to be perfect and high fidelity and cater to a niche audience. Things take time. At least (imo) their games aren't getting worse but better even if its little by little)

Think the issue is with personal flavor and expectations of what COULD or MIGHT have been if you integrated in a (single) modern game everything you loved in other games.
Maybe unrealistic(?) expectations of having the whole package in one, eh?
Problem is, this is inherently human - to evolve and expect MORE, letting the imagination build those wholesome packages of bits and pieces that you like...
50 years ago, when I played Baldur's Gate 2, I expected and hoped that, ONE DAY, a Baldur's Gate game will be so immersive, detailed and complex, that it would be in first person and even have toilet paper in it... (see Bethesda games).
On a side note, which games do you like that offer all that you like?
RDR2, Alien Isolation, Pillars of Eternity 2
I played a few hours of RDR2, I never played Alien Iso at all, and I loved Pillars 1 and then played few hours of Pillars 2.
People have different taste. I recently had an itch for open world racing game, I went and installed The Crew, and I had plenty of fun with it. Then AC Rally dropped out of nowhere, and I completely abandoned The Crew and I ended spending all my free time in ACR. It's completely bare bones game, four stages in total. They're not even long by rally standards, yet they offer more detail than whole world of The Crew.
Its a big who cares. Ubisoft doesn't learn anyway and will keep making ubislop as if they haven't tried a single popular game outside their own franchises, ever.
To support the effective implementation and operation of this new model, the Group also intends to return to five days per week on site for all teams, complemented by an annual allowance of working-from-home days. This evolution is intended to strengthen collaboration, including constant knowledge sharing, and the collective dynamic across teams. In-person collaboration is a key enabler of collective efficiency, creativity and success in a persistently more selective AAA market.

A company wide mandate? I wonder how the French labour unions will take this. Can this even be mandated like this in France?
They've already called for a strike tomorrow, so they're taking it all about as well as you'd expect
Yeah just read that. Not going very well for Ubisoft it seems.
EDIT:
As previously confirmed, Ubisoft's new operational model will be structured around multiple independent 'creative houses', the first of which is Vantage Studios, the subsidiary part-owned by Tencent opened last year, which will oversee Rainbow Six, Assassin's Creed, and Far Cry.
Quote:
On Tuesday, Ubisoft detailed the other 'creative houses' for the first time, which will each be organized around a distinct genre. They are (in addition to Vantage Studios):
CH2, dedicated to "competitive and cooperative shooter experiences", including The Division, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell.
CH3, which will operate a roster of "select, sharp Live experiences", such as For Honor, The Crew, Riders Republic, Brawlhalla, and Skull & Bones.
CH4, which will focus on fantasy worlds and narrative-driven universes like Anno, Might & Magic, Rayman, Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good & Evil.
CH5, which Ubisoft says is aimed at "reclaiming [our] position in casual and family-friendly games" in brands including Just Dance, Uno, and Hasbro.
In addition, Ubisoft has four new IPs currently in development, including the recently-acquired MOBA March of Giants, which is says will be assigned to a creative house at a later stage.
Sooooo Beyond Good & Evil 2 is stil in the works???
This is insane, they cannot deliver remake of 3d action platformer (which sounds relatively easy), but still burning money on BG&E which, I'm guessing, had less players that PoP trilogy.
French unions are planning strikes tomorrow so I wonder if some IPs will be saved thanks to that. What a shit show
People have been waiting and cheering for this, but I feel the games will be even worse off whoever decides to get in on the IPs if the big boom happens.
Sad for some of the series tbh, not that I care for many but still, some were very decent games looking past a lot of the hyperbolic bullshit that was thrown around the past 2 years.
This is the best thing that could have happened imo.
THe ips werent in a good place anyhow.
Splinter Cell is dead.
Beyond Good and Evil is dead.
Ghost recon is in a +- state.
Rainbow Six was once a tactical sp shooter series at least that branch is dead.
Prince of Persia was/is dead. New itteration got axed. (I dont count the spin offs)
Rayman dead.
No new For Honor.
Ass creed is subjectively shit for me.
So are Far Cry games since they are repeat slop.
Watch Dogs series was always mid.
I wont even count the mid one offs like skull and bones.
They should continue doing what they do until the bitter end.
DEI isn't the only reason but one of the reasons ofc but the game's industry needs more other publishers and less ubisoft
Their ubislop formula did a lot of damage. Imagine havibg multiple game series making you feel they're all the same. Its an astonishing feat of terrible game making. But their DEI shite was what broke that camels back. Must be a true cuck to not be able to admit it.
My god, what a delusional/lying clown. I don't even know what the fuck DEI has to do with better work environment.
Nor do I understand what DEI has to do with expanding in to the South American and Middle Eastern markets. I don't think he knows how much Brazilians love the gays, as for the Middle East... do I even need to say anything?
Oh right, also DEI advocates had very little influence ... Yeah, ok buddy, why the fuck did you invent a black samurai then? In a game that even with how mediocre/shit it was, would have sold way better if it just had you play an actual fucking samurai.
These people just have no concept of how rot actually works. Of course the company didn't implode once you implemented DEI bs. It takes fucking time. It's a slow corrosion.
Did the actual work environment improve, or was everyone just walking on eggshels and it just looked that way?
Why does this clown thing their games either stagnated or degraded? You keep hiring underqualified people, you have an atmosphere of toxic positivity, where nobody give pushback on bad ideas, and everyone just has to pretend every fucking idea from the DEI cunts is amazing, lest they be called a bigot.
You have old devs likely leave, or be replaced with more Equitable people, that have no clue what they are doing.
You can't have a creative environment where people are afraid of giving feedback, unless that feedback is of course : too many white people, too many straight people.
It is mental. Sure, the DEI implemented in game wasn't the main cause for the decline, but the DEI in the company is what led to the degradation of their products. You need meritocracy, or as close to it as possible for any sort of company to succeed. DEI is poison, and not only is it poison to the company, but to all the people you're so-called trying to help uplift. Because even if they are talented individuals, not only will they feel like an imposter, since they know the initiative is there and will likely always question if that is why they got hired/promoted. But every coworker will be asking the same fucking question in their heads. It creates tension in the workplace.
