People who treat wikipedia as a legit knowledge reference are just as retarded as people who use ai as a source of knowledge.

Perhaps you don’t understand how prevalent this is with the younger generations. This is how they consume information; how they “verify”. What their favorite chat bot tells them is like gospel. |

I know they do it. I can’t tell you how often I have to explain to them what wikipedia is and that it is essentially unquotable for scientific purposes.
The new new generation doesn’t even use wikipedia to verify their chatbots they just believe anything the chatbot says. And thats even worse.
Between that and the tiktok brainrot they are in my opinion on their way to become the dumbest generation ever despite billions thrown at them through education.
Its simple though. People chose the way of least resistance. AI (and in some ways wikipedia too) gives the illusion of having all knowledge (at least their level of understanding) with the least amount of effort. Young brains want entertainment not effort. The industry understands and exploits that.

It's not just brainrot. It's a brain that was never trained to critically think. Parents never contradict their children or demand of them to solve for critical thinking. Teachers are even worse. And so, even people who are intelligent have these gaping hole blindspots that they are completely unequipped to deal with. I'm not really sure all this can be walked back. |

I don't blame anyone. But I do hear stories from all the parents around me, and in contrast, I remember all the teachers I had. I'm sure most of them are steam well-meaning even today, and I say it with zero cynicism, but they are given very little tools (monetary, pedagogical, aspirational or inspirational), so the end-result is that the school system is letting down the new generation. And this seems like a world-wide phenomenon, not country or culture-specific, so the entire world is failing these kids.
