I am a big Obsidian fan. KotOR II is one of the all time greats. NWN2 MotB was stellar for me back in the day. So naturally I keep hoping and I played this game - only to abandon it a couple of hours later. Atrocious.
BUT! I want to use this thread (as well) to advocate for a game I just found a couple of weeks ago: Tainted Grail: the fall of Avalon. It is everything Avowed should have been, but wasn`t.
Really good. If you felt Avowed is woke slop, but would have otherwise given it a chance, if it were written and designed like Obsidian games of old - then Tainted Grail is the game for you.

I'll give it a go.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
Tainted Grail suffers from the same major issue that people in this thread say Avowed suffers from. The starting area is the only good area, everything afterwards is just lower quality padding.
Yeah, but the first area in Tainted Grail is stronger than the first area in Avowed. Both games are flawed, but expectations come in to play when judging a game. Also, The big difference is that, at least for me, Obsidian feels like they're not trying to make something special, or memorable, but something safe. And intent matters a lot to me.
I don't know, when you played Tainted Grail. I am finding out about it just now.
All I can say is: I very, very rarely 100% a game. Almost never. The last open world I did that with was Witcher 3. Don't misunderstand, this is nowhere near, BUT! I am 100%ing this.
The lore, the writing, mood is what drives Tainted Grail for me. Exploration is rewarded with lore. And even though I played the heck out of both Pillars of Eternity games, Avowed was just shit in the Lore and writing department.
This game is also a mature game, whereas Avowed is a child`s game.
Back to the original point: I just finished the second act (the biggest one). Early reviews said it was filler content. Didn't feel like filler to me. Full of good side quests and secrets to discover. For me at least.
