Finished the audio book only recently. Not sure about this movie. Book adaptions are always tricky, but it seems like they aren't even keeping to core principles of the book (like the ship looks completely different from what I took away from the book, which explained why it was designed a certain way).
In addition, why do they spoil one of the biggest things right in the first trailer? Watching trailers has been a nightmare for ages, they just can't help themselves spoiling 80% of any given movie.

What a stupid name. But if you guys say even the trailer is spoilerish BUT the book is pretty good, guess I'll ignore the trailer and go and check the book out.

The book is rather "sciency", but in an interesting way I thought. I did listen to the audio book and noticed right then that it was clearly written with a film adaption in mind, especially the last "action sequence" without wanting to spoil anything (which the trailers do plenty).

Seen it yesterday and it does capture the spirit of the book. Obviously some things are skipped and some are changed/simplified, but overall it is quite faithful adaptation. I absolutely recommend watching this movie as I found it great, even if I knew exactly what is going to happen next, and how will it end.
But book is still better, so if you like the movie I recommend reading the book.
Overly cute movie. Watched it with 2 others and the kid liked it, i guess we adults thought it was "ok".
Everything is rather surface level and a bit Disney'ish. I have no desire to watch it again (i have seen Contact and Arrival like 10 times).
Might be worth a watch if you want something decent sci-fi, portrayed as something smarter than it is, fun in a cute way sometimes. Felt less "wholesome" than it should have though, did not read the book but my bet is that's what the book is aiming for.
Saw it yesterday, same feeling as vurt. I'd give it a 7, it's not bad but I prefer my scifi to be a bit harder I was expecting more of The Martian type of "space survival", but it's way simpler than that.
The wholesome parts with Rocky didn't do much for me either, felt cheap and not earned because the first 30 minutes are really rushed. It's definitely no Arrival they learn to communicate in 5 minutes. And Rocky understands English too, apparently.
Which is weird, because the movie is also way too long. Did we really need all those flashbacks, in particular the karaoke part? They could have used that time much better/efficiently.
Visually it's great though.
But not sure I'm interested in reading the book anymore either.
Rocky saying he's 186 years old triggered the fuck out of me as well. How does it even know how long a year is? Guess I was too bored that stuff like that stood out to me
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

In short, Rocky's brain is like a computer. He can process and calculate a lot of stuff very quickly and one of the first things (even shown in movie, but briefly) Ryland shows to Rock is a clock and then Rocky shows his clock. From this scene Ryland learns that Rocky uses base 6 numeric system and Rocky learns how humans calculate time. The beginning of the communication is actually great (in the book) as they started from measurement systems they use.
I would say movie is more about friendship and book is more about science. If you prefer science, then you might like the book. Is not that long, you can easily read it in one day.
