Before 2020 I would have preordered 2 copies, just to be safe in case they ran out.
Nowadays ... I don't even know what to expect.
I still don't have finished Below Zero, gameplay is always good, story ... meh.
Indeed. Most gamers ignore coherent writing and actual atmosphere in a survival game since they look for their craft-a-ton-like dopamine fix, but the original Subnautica truly nailed the balance between gameplay and sense of loneliness thanks to its interesting, noninvasive (non-obnoxious) storytelling. Unlike Below Zero, it provided perfect immersion, and not just in a literal sense.
It'll be curious (or painful, depending on the outcome ) to see how the story will evolve this time around - as far as I know, it's a new chapter that has nothing in common with BZ. Expectations are very low, we'll see in a few years when the Earlyaccessitis runs its course.

I would like to report this post Mods, for making me feel called out
Also some of us don't ignore writing, good or bad we try to outright avoid it. We just ignore it because we have no choice if it exists. haha
Give me stick figures in a monochrome world with zero dialog or story. If it's got good building, crafting, gathering, survival mechanics 10/10 GOTY material for me.
Like Satisfactory, love that game. Anytime the machine/lady/whatever started Im like "STOP talking to me, give me the next tier unlock and go away"
So there's those of us that are not 'they screw up by ignoring the good parts'. It's what we call the good parts are different.
I feel there is room for both, ARK did it well. Story and lore exists to find and dive into, but you can 100% ignore it and play 1000 hours never caring why you woke up staring at a gem in your wrist. And the game never stonewalls you behind having to dive into it to advance.

"Krafton are still very much helping us": Dev of Xbox Game Pass' Subnautica 2 says it's still working with publisher Krafton despite Steam page removal
A lawsuit was then filed, with Krafton defending itself in court by claiming the Subnautica founders were negligent in their development of the sequel and that a delay was necessary. In the end, a judge sided with Unknown Worlds, ordering the publisher to reinstate Ted Gill, give him full control over the game's release date, and keep the offer of the $250 million bonus open through 2026.
I will most certainly s(p)oil myself with the early access.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
