ok, made it into the game, that's the first quest done Laughing
Game feels good so far, only reached the castle and did a little tour around. What were they smoking with the lockpicking though Laughing Does getting skilled up remove the mini-game, or will I have to look for a mod?

Played 8 hours for a first session and despite the jank, I think it’s pretty damn good.
I played the original but other than really enjoying it, I barely remember anything of it.

The first couple of hours are a struggle but the ranged attacks make the game less difficult and more fun.

Got myself a bow, firebolt spell, numerous melee weapons and map but zero armour yet so I’m generally dead in 1 or 2 hits!

It’s pretty shocking that human enemies loot you after being knocked down lol.

I ran into Mud and let him follow me around but he got killed lol.
I assume he’s permadead?
Surprising that every single dead thing including Mud stays on the ground, seemingly for the whole playthrough?

I had several crashes but there was a patch today and although I don’t know what it did, I’ve had less crashes so hopefully that was a part of it.

Not quite sure how the lock picking works so that’s quite frustrating but I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

I suspect and hope there will be plenty of improvements and quality of life changes coming.

I’m having fun though which is the main thing Very Happy

https://mp1st.com/title-updates-and-patches/gothic-1-remake-update-1-000-003-release-day-one-patch

Quote:
Alkimia Interactive has released Gothic 1 Remake update 1.000.003, and it’s the game’s day-one patch. Expect issues to be resolved, as the developers have talked about the feedback they’re received from the community.

Don’t expect anything big from today’s update, though, as this is the first patch and we’re not even a week from release.

The developers are monitoring player feedback about lockpicking.
They note that opinions are mixed and emphasize that lockpicking becomes significantly easier when players invest skill points into it.

I picked almost all the locks in the lower are of the old camp and its not that difficult.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Well, first mods will probably restore lockpicking and whatever else anyone who has never played a gothic game in their life wine about back to the released version values.
Because the devs will nerf likely nerf the shit out of it because "muh mass appeal"

Yeah, yesterday checked the Steam reviews and first negative one I saw was: -"No auto-save in 2026, refunded!"

It...It...does have auto-save though?

Anyway, encountered a major bug: if you spoke with the mercenaries protecting the Water Mages they will not initiate dialogue with you, so when you have to visit Saturas you can't, because they're otherwise normal mercenary npc's. When I go inside they don't even warn me, just immediately attack.

I managed to overcome this by killing them, but only Saturas wants to speak to me now, the other mages are hostile since the script which turns them non-hostile never executed.
Even went back to a previous chapter save and nope, still there. Oh well, at least I can go forward.

My potato PC cannot run Angina 5.x games so I had to pick a PS5 version and it runs in glorious 30fps on PS5 Pro with no graphic settings

I've put maybe 2h into the game but that frame-rate is just killing the experience, other than that it seems like a very good remake I will gladly continue once/if 60fps patch is available.

I'm 99% sure that demo had such option. It seems I might have to invest in the new PC if console games will have such "cinematic experience".

Had to vent somewhere as it just pissed me off Smile

Wait. Don't let the bugs sour your enjoyment, unless you're an avid gothic fan and need your fix NOW.

The more I play the more I understand what they meant when they said it's a remake and a reimagining. There's lots of cool changes. Act 3 has the same main plot, but how you achieve your objectives has changed.

mortis, back in the day people took that 30 fps and called it a cinematic experience, superior to 60+fps on PC Very Happy

Huh? 30fps? Ain’t no way. Didn’t feel like it to me on my PS5 Pro.
Hopefully PSSR does get implemented at some point though.

I'm in no hurry to buy this so I'm gonna wait.

My question to those who have played it though: Do these devs have the potential to release a new Gothic but not a remake?

A portion of the background music playing around the old camp area is ripped directly out of Baldur's Gate 2. The resemblance is so uncanny it instantly reminded me of BG2.

40 hours in and the only thing stopping me from playing is the weakness of my flesh.

I think they have a shot at making their own Gothic game (After Gothic 2 Remake).

I've put it on hold for now since it is wise to let the game marinate a bit, but the impressions are definitely positive. These folks understand the essence of Gothic (not an easy feat these days) so why not, they should go for it and try to make their own thing in the future. Gothic 2 comes first though, as Bendi said Razz

Play it, don't wait, life's too short. Haven't encountered any bugs so far. Try to isodemo if you're unsure about performance.
I don't understand Bendi up there. Telling you to wait, while also saying he can't stop playing Laughing

The game is great, feels very much like it did back in the day.

I love how they fixed plot holes and inconsistencies.

Spoilers:

Some examples: Old camp

New camp

Orc camp

That and the many other addons they made makes this the definite vanilla version of Gothic 1 for me.

There are a lot of quest bugs though. Had one myself. Problem is also that a lot of npc’s don’t talk to you anyway so it’s not clear if it’s intended or if it’s a bug. So rolling back a save isn’t an option most of the time.

Yup. The biggest bug had me fight Saturas every time I visited, because I couldn't trigger the convo to let me into their compound, despite the main quest needing me to. Even as a Fire Mage turned Mercenary they were still hostile (had to sneak behind him and talk before he attacked, then run xD), only when I became a Water Mage (BTW I love all the new quests when you join a guild) did everything calm down.

I still finished all quests and I'm currently in the Sleeper Temple, so I'm not complaining all that much, but if the game wasn't so good to play I'd wait till it gets patched.

The saving system is beyond stupid.

The combat system seems worse than it was in the original game. Laughing

You mean, F5 to quicksave and F9 to quickload? Laughing

Combat isn't that bad, I think. It's easier to get used to than the original one.

Saving system is just a normal one though? Save, autosave, manual save. And the combat system you just have to get used to if you were expecting something like the original. But it's pretty decent. Defnitely not a button masher, you need some tactics.
