Eh, I have issues with the wording of the initiative on register vs the ideology behind it. Some parts ARE too vague. The obvious intent of it is one thing. The specific wording to convey it is another. And its missing the mark, or a mark at all in some places.

But also don't agree with PirateSoftware and have issues with his approach about it.

I don't think the intent or ideal BEHIND the movement is bad. I support that ideal 100%. The concept and implied intention of the suggested law is a given. But 'givens' are not how laws work when the specifics of how and what are missing.

Reading the paper submitted to the register I could easily see it exploited by game companies, or misinterpreted by the 50+ year old non-gaming politicians that would be the ones rewriting it to ratify it into law, fucking over smaller game companies down the road with their games if it has any non local only parts that are 'quintessential' to the game itself, and not just becoming a local only husk of the games mechanics.

We can help that if we stop sharing tea about him in videos giving it attention Razz
To me, hes one dude, why is talking about his singular opinion on it important? it seems he gets more coverage than the thing it's about.

I didn't know who he was before all the post about him in here.

See. THAT should be in the 'WTF did I just watch" thread Very Happy
An hour long video about a single person that people keep saying we should stop giving attention to.

Do we really need an HOUR to explain: StopKillingGames exists, some online personality was vocally against it.

I made it 17 minutes in, and it just got to the point about his personality...I myself dunno how this has anything to do with it.
Great guy or asshole, or faking great guy? He's against it outside that. Feels I just watched 17 minutes of framing a view on a person, to frame a conclusion on something different later in the loooong video.

A bit like setting up "And our next speaker on fluid dynamics is Bob. He is against the new plans for the bypass on the hydro dam., Keep in mind bob is rude to his kids, divorced, owes alimony and is not pleasant to have lunch with. Bob your up take the mic"

I guess every movement needs a villain. And 'gaming industry' was too impersonal and faceless. So run with a face you can single out of the masses.
He is a shithead, but why all the focus on what one guy thinks? Why not focus on an actual CEO or company accused of doing it, that is fighting it? the people that its about stopping? Not the opinion, on the opinion, of someone random online.

Video on this topic from a channel I really like:

Please make sure to read the pinned comment from Ross, as while the video itself provides a lot of information, it does indeed miss this option.

https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_26_1369

Quote:
The European Commission will engage with consumers and publishers by the end of 2026 to explore ways to improve industry standards, as a response to the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) ‘Stop Destroying Videogames'.

Modern video games often rely on publishers' servers to function. Publishers may stop supporting these servers, leading the games to become partially or entirely unplayable. The ECI therefore invited the Commission to propose legislation ensuring that players can continue to play the video games after the publishers stop providing support for these games commercially.

The Commission considers that at this stage it cannot propose a legal obligation to keep video games playable after they stop being provided commercially. This is due, also, to existing intellectual property rights. Under EU copyright law, rights holders enjoy exclusive rights over their creations. In addition to copyright, other intellectual property rights may also be relevant as they may protect different visual and technological aspects of a video game.

Existing EU consumer law already provides for important safeguards protecting the economic interests of consumers. Video game providers must inform consumers about the duration and the conditions for terminating the contract before the consumers signs up for the video game. The Directive on digital content and digital services provides consumers with remedies when the content or service provided does not conform with the contract and what consumers could reasonably expect. Consumers may be entitled to proportionate refund of their purchases.

However, to address players' concerns, the Commission has committed to taking several steps.

First, it will initiate an exchange with the video game industry and consumer representatives with the aim to draw up an industry code of conduct on managing video games' ‘end of life'.

Second, the Commission will work with consumer organisations and authorities to raise awareness about the applicable rights that protect consumers, including on safeguards protecting the economic interests of consumers. The Commission will report on the application of the Directive on digital content and digital services before the end of the year. Active enforcement of these existing consumer rights can also incentivise the providers to offer video games with longer lifespans and explore solutions for meeting consumer expectations.

Background

This is the fourteenth initiative to receive a formal Commission response since ECIs were launched in 2012.

Wow, it's fucking nothing! Awesome

All that time, work, and ruckus, and in the end NOTHING changes. Typical and not at all surprising. Commissioners bought and paid for in advance, just like ALL the other politicians.

It's not surprising. If you watch this video it becomes clear that every country has their hands tied by US copyright enforcement:
