Yeah, but retailers are motivated by the same forces as nVidia or AMD. nVidia makes bucket loads of money from the same silicon that goes in the gaming hardware, and fab production is very limited compared to the demand, as are retailers that have a limited number of old hardware, but demand is through the roof. So no, not "Fuck Nvidia to hell", "Fuck an entire industry that is willing to pay nVidia so much more than gamers that it makes no economic sense to keep producing GPUs".
I'm not defending Nvidia. I have no idea why people assume I am defending a thing (anything), simply when I point out an assumption about them is wrong.
Fuck nvidia for 100 things. But not 4000 prices right now, that vendors.
They have a 100% markup from nvidia's MSRP So they got it for 1/2 THAT. so they are charging $1000 for a $300 card to them, they bought 1-2 years ago. ANY 4000 series for sale is remaining vendor stock, already in vendors hands for a while now.
Nvidia has zero control over what people charge for cards they don't make anymore. I am with you FUCK nvidia for 100 reasons, but not 100+1 (this one).
Fuck nvidia for current prices on new GPUs. AND fuck Vendors for other prices.

Fuck the entire GPU industry (from Nvidia to retailers). Fine, right?
I don't care. Nvidia is abusing their position and scamming the consumer market. The supply/demand dichotomy is false; Nvidia is consciously controlling supply just like the big RAM makers do in order to manipulate us all to pay 2-3 times more than we should.
There's a reason why this is a thing:
Quote:
Nvidia is the world's most valuable publicly traded company, with a market capitalization of roughly $5.3 trillion to $5.5 trillion.
Jensen and his cronies managed to reach their goal of selling a lot less for a lot more and basically screw us all over just like the RAM manufacturers are doing with the whole AI scam.
Quote:
RTX 5090 - MSRP $1,999 : Current = $4,300 – $5,000 : Markup $2,300 to +$3,000 (~115%–150%)
RTX 5080 - MSRP $999 : Current $1,500 – $1,600 : Markup $500 to +$600 (~50%–60%)
RTX 5070 Ti - MSRP $749 : Current ~$1,100 : Markup +$350 (~47%)
RTX 5070 - MSRP $549 : Current ~$900 : Markup +$350 (~64%)
RTX 5060 Ti (16GB) - MSRP $429 : ~$805 : Markup +$375 (~87%)
RTX 5060 - MSRP $299 : Current ~$470 : Markup +$170 (~57%)
I'm extra pissed since I installed the latest experimental build of Subnautica 2 just a couple of days ago before my 3070 died on me. It worked very well with Subnautica 2 @ 1440p and 100+ fps.
Now I'm stuck with my old 6GB 2060 and I've had to lower the in-game resolution to 1680x1050 with all in-game settings at low-medium to get 50-60 fps.
Yeah. I'm looking at 2nd hand stuff to replace my dead 3070. It's a risk but I just won't spend ~€800-€1000 on a mid-range GPU. I also won't put even more money in Jensen's pockets which are already filled to the brim and then some.
Jensen 'the greedy':
"I think the fact that everything is scarce is fantastic for us."
Nvidia is deliberately restricting product volume while prices skyrocket. They sell less units for more.
Nvidia has also reached the monopoly stage of it's consumer business:
Quote:
~90% to 95% Monopolization: Nvidia completely choked out competitors, pushing AMD's discrete desktop market share down to historical lows of 8%.
We NEED alternatives. Nvidia make MASSIVE purchases from component manufacturers which gives them a lot of control over the purchase price. Their competitors can't do that and they're forced to buy the necessary components for a much higher price. That's why AMD isn't able to undercut Nvidias prices. Nvidia is raking in record revenues while AMD's margins from sales are fairly low.
AMD's gaming segment revenue plummeted 31% year-over-year in 2025-2026. AMD is also busy making components for the consoles which is a low margin affair for them.
In order to survive AMD is also forced to follow Nvidia's suit of focusing on AI data centers, downgrading their focus on the gaming market.
As consumers we're just mugs with absolutely no power to do anything about it. The only way to make any kind of different would be to stop buying their stuff, esp. from Nvidia. That's not going to happen since most consumers just can't stop buying new GPU's. Even if the sales dropped significantly it's unlikely that anything would change, at least in near future, since Nvidia and AMD has shifted their focus to the whole AI bullshit.
We're simply fucked until something happens that challenges Nvidias monopoly-like position. There are after all only three companies that are competing; Nvidia, AMD and Intel. AMD doesn't have the ability and capability to do so. Intel doesn't seem to have the technical capability or interest in stepping up to become a serious player in the consumer GPU market.
There ARE other "upcoming" rivals around the corner but even if they have designs that can rival Nvidia's or AMD's stuff they need astronomical investments to build up a competitive business. Add to that the fact that Nvidia is monopolizing the orders for components and GPU manufacturing, thereby making it incredibly difficult for new players to even get someone to manufacture the silicon they need.
There's a 4070 on Tradera (Swedish eBay-style site, the main online trading site here). The auction ends August 25 which means the current bids means nothing.
It's currently:
ASUS ProArt GeForce RTX 4070 OC Edition 12GB GDDR6X
Current bid:
3 801 Swedish kr = €343
If I could get that for €343 I'd buy it right now. Unfortunately it's probably going to sell for 2x or more of that price.
However, it's a 2-slot workstation card with a smaller and weaker cooling setup which makes it less interesting for gaming and negatively affects any kind of overclocking headroom. It's BIOS also have serious restrictions when it comes to power draw which further lessens it's use as a gaming card.
Best deal in Germany, still 50 eur more than I paid for the ASUS PRIME 9070XT last year.

ps. I want to add this little tidbit to the conspiracy theory:
Nvidia is lending money to the AI businesses who in turn use that money to buy/rent the hardware from Nvidia. It's a closed loop. Nvidia is basically "buying" their own products. What does that mean?
1. The stock traders love to play the game of putting value on things that are just floof. It's become a complex game where everything is on paper.
2. Nvidia is using the AI corporations as the main part of their scam against consumers whether it's in the professional world or ordinary consumers. As the balls roll around that close loop the trade evaluations and investments are just growing beyond comprehension. They're fucking everyone and they keep getting away with it since Nvidia can just point to the fact that they're shipping hardware to the otherwise empty AI farms around the world. The fact that Nvidia is lending the money to the AI businesses for the rental of Nvidia hardware just makes the water murkier.
The AI bubble will fail at one point but we're not there yet. When it falls/fails we're probably going to experience 2008 all over again. So much money has been invested in those companies that it's ridiculous.
Gonna sell the 3090, get a 5070 ti i think, seems like i can get more for the 3090 than what a 5070 ti costs new. Downgrading vram does kind of suck but i am also kind of over using AI locally, i do not think its worth it apart from some small edge cases here and there.
I need DLSS 5 Looks fantastic, but sure its just a mod so far and with a pre-release, it will neither perform or look as the devs intend yet.¨
i hope they don't sell out, i can't order until the 1st next month. quite ""cheap"" on amazon.se in comparison to everywhere else, including other eu countries.
Seems like a bad idea. Dlss5 cuts your fps in half. It’s probably not even worth it with a 5090. But as a plus you’ll get factory warranty and a bit lower watt usage. The 5070 ti is the better card for gaming regardless the lower vram.
I think it can do interesting things with older games, couldn't give a shit about using it for newer games though so performance wouldn't be a problem.

That’s the only viable user case, older games. But you don’t play those for how they look so why bother. And you’ll get used to the new look in 1-2 hours.
That’s the only viable user case, any game you personally would want it on. But I don’t play those for how they look so why bother. And I’ll get used to the new look in 1-2 hours.
Fixed it for you
Fixed it more for him. Viable use is whatever the individual user finds it viable for.
Install reshade and set ascii mode and upscale it by 10x and run on a 720p monitor if that's your bag.
No one can tell you it's wrong. Your machine, your game, your money spent on it.

I fucking live for playing older games and with as good graphics as possible. its how i got into modding, trying to make old games look way better than when i last played them.
cant wait to play e.g stalker, maybe System Shock 2 remaster (i'll check how it looks at least)... maybe there would be a way to play KOTOR or Morrowind with it.

This, more than ever.
Seeing what it did in that CoP video was the first time I regreted (just a little, for now) not spending extra 150 to get that 5070ti on last year's black friday sales.

I'm not seeing people playing their games at 720p. People will not scale down their settings, just see the amount of complaining after a poorly optimised game, people just rather not play it then scale down their graphical settings. So you either need a serious upgrade or forget about it for now. Older games with DLSS5 are fine I guess.
you can also use it for movies, and someone said use something like OBS to stream anything and it will get DLSS 5. No idea if this is really correct..
Edit: yes it actually works, someone posted a screen.
Kind of cool. So if you have high quality video of GTA 6 - capture with OBS to see how it would look with DLSS 5. "i tested it with obs and i can just capture e.g. a browser window and apply it live to anything playing"
I think this has potential, like old CGI movies which looks dated could look more realistic.
I hope that in time you can train the filter to recognize faces and adapt to specific things. Sometimes face look really bad but the rest is good, so it would make sense to leave out or apply a different filter to faces.

It would look too inconsistent if left out, the difference is just night and day, the game would then have typical plain 3D model faces vs ultra realistic ones, that would look awful.
What will happen is that if a developer makes a game with the tech in mind they can actually texture something to make it look good. Right now these games are not made with DLSS 5 in mind so its why someone can look off (e.g look too old or go from having a stubble to almost a full beard etc).
You can tell it already does recognize faces though, women does look like women, they don't get a stubble or other errors. Unsure if it recognizes children, or if they get an old look perhaps, that would be pretty bad.
Would love an option that only fixes lighting without the face modding or overly realistic touches, the real big advantage with this is that it fixes so many glaring issues even nowadays games still have, fake bright interiors, bad edge lighting, light bleed through walls and so on.
That was more way more impressive than some of the classic "DLSS5 ON" bullshot examples.
But those being fixed keeps you way more immersed in even an older title.

You can exclude faces, there is a face mask option even in the unofficial implementations
and how much of the effect should be applied to faces, 0 meaning only the game world gets shaded, not faces
and depending on which model is chosen and how you set up the sliders that means a mild effect on world geometry, and none on faces
@Amadeus Seems already well set up then but maybe they'll refine it a bit more so it's not tanking half the fps, could see myself use this on a couple games.
Big if being that the cards supporting this will be still available or new ones are affordable
