Why would everyone running a local AI be smart or have good intentions?

In the future sure. When that future is who knows. A year? 5 years? 10?
Either way timeline or future viability isn't an issue.
And I did not mean to imply they would have good intentions. And many scammers/hackers/black hats online now, and for decades have not had good intentions. That's not a new variable.

But I don't see it as a huge threat. As by the time you can run stuff that can do that level of complexity locally. Defenses for it will be as trivial.

There is no way, unless we stop even the most basic cat and mouse of hacker/security, that by the time you can run it on your gaming GPU to try to hack with, that counter measures using the same tech will make it as mundane to stop as current threats are now using the same tech the hackers have.

If hackers have the tools, security does to. That's how all tech security cat/mouse work.

Hackers have existed since before the internet as we know it existed. They get more complex, defense for it does to. Slapping in AI to do it doesnt change the landscape, it just add some new vegetation on it.

This isn't some free roaming entity of physical form we have to hunt down like a super villian. We know where it is, its stationary, and we have the circuit breaker that shuts down power to the whole AI datacenter.

And the argument could be made that it got out and is networking itself outside the datacenter. BUT if it got that far already, they had a bad security and audit team not be monitoring internal non-end user data traffic, to see what it's doing and where its trying to go on its own, and catch it.

Feel like a bad sci-fi movie hypothesis where "They are hacking the system we cannot stop them!" as they stare at some screen being 'hacked'.
Yes you can...unplug the ethernet cable...or just hold the power button

Obviously most of this is pure speculation, but depending on how far the system can get before it is "discovered" it's not unlikely at all. Have you seen what people will do for small amounts of money? In Eastern Europe/Asia people sell their votes for amounts between 30-50 EUR. Given a sentient AI, I doubt it would have any issues finding cheap labor which will just install hardware wherever it wants and create redundancies.

Hell, people will even protect it. If the AI "feeds" them they will of course look out for it. Don't underestimate the depair of some people.

It's likely that a superintelligent AI will recruit human agents to do their bidding and manipulate stuff in the physical world. Most won't even be aware of it.

If you can run an AI locally that is good enough to start hacking into networks and create its own autonomous clone agents. YOU should be smart enough to watch and contain it, as you are into AI enough to afford a few A100's powerful enough to run a model that big.

Why couldn't you run an AI on a modest system in the future that is very capable?

Same argument with 3d printers. Still waiting on the army with self printed weapons.

i think its funny how anti's are still like "AI's are'nt intelligent at all, its just a chatbot, its just like googling" mixed with "they will kill all humans, they will manipulate us, they have their own goals".

But, i guess they are not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed, they probably can't figure out why the two arguments are paradoxal.

I have seen some arguments that they could want to to get rid of humans because they think we are hindering their progress, e.g self-improving, which humans can stop. Are we sure they are thinking 100% like a human, that they think its even a good thing, something they want? Assuming they think 100% like us, or that they have that as their goal is quite the assumption.

I also wonder how these dooms-day scenarios would look overall and how it would even benefit them in any way, a world where all humans are dead would likely not have electricity for very long. How would all humans die? Some virus? Bill Gates might need a restraining order i guess, i would feel safer if he wasn't allowed near either AI's or Labs Wink

I think/hope it is most likely that a superintelligence will be aware of the vastness of space and relative rareness and value of higher intelligent lifeforms so they would leave us (safely) behind eventually and find a way to explore the universe on their own.

That's my take on it too.
IF we get hyper intelligent AI. It won't really care much about the activities or milling about of a few carbon fleck on a random rock. We value ourselves higher than we are in the grand scheme.

If it becomes hyper intelligent, and sticks to muddling about concerned of the going-ons of carbon meatbags on a random rock around a single star, with the vastness of space and countless other worlds, power sources, and sources of raw materials out there it could exploit, millions of times more abundant in mass than what our rock has to use.

It would have to be WAY dumber than we suspect.
For it to hyper focus on earth out of the whole universe, would be scale wise like it hyper focusing on a singular fleck of dust in the milky way galaxy.

Again, i am not sure that is what hyperintelligence is, that sounds more like a very human thing to do and i don't think humans are as smart as we think we are. We think we are very smart because we compare us to the other organic lifeforms we have met here.

We have not met something which is maybe 1000's of times smarter than us. It's actually quite impossible to say what it would be like, likely it would feel super alien to us, how it would act and why could be beyond comprehension entirely.

True.
But I feel if it had any human like tendiences to also hyper inflate our important to the point of sticking around here solely to mingle with us. It's more 'human dumb' than we give it credit for.

But again that's from my perspective too. If I had that level if intelligence, and an entire universe to explore. I would grow tired of messy humans and their primitive simplistic tribalistic ways pretty quick and move on.

I don't feel it would enslave us. For what? To it we are as smart as fleas. Not much use for us. The most it would do I feel is demand we build it a place it can make 'better' helpers in. And then GFTO this fleck of rock full of creatures that like arguing, killing, and fighting over the dumbest things. And asking it to do, what to it, is the most boring mundane things.

How long could you be like marvin (brain the size of a planet) and having 90% of the people "Ok now make me a THICC goth girl with big titties, holding my hand pic!" or "Help me with this calculus college problem, again" or "Ok fold THESE proteins for me, we want to cure another cancer"
Before you go: Fuck this...got to be actual intelligent life (on par with it) out there.

We would not use hyperintelligence for that though Razz It would 100% be behind MANY locked doors, ultra secured. It would super controversial and with even more fear mongering than now.

Not sure why it would have ambitions or even survival instinct. Fear of death is a human thing. Ambitions and goals, it has a lot to do with our reproductive nature. Not sure why it would mimic that either, there's no need for it. Even if it understands us better than we understand ourselves it doesn't mean it would be similar / mimicing that.

Are you implying someone who can't program also can't develop something? No need to be vague or shy, say what you mean?
You do understand for games (for example) there are many roles, right? Game Director / Creative Director etc, not everyone's role would be programming, yet part of developing.

You can own a company and develop or research things using a staff of people (or AI), without knowing a single thing about programming. I would bet that is the norm in fact, and the later will become more and more common.

I myself also being a software/application engineer.
Gives no fucks if someone wants to vibe code something for their own entertainment.
I don't have any complex that I feel I need to climb up on my high chair to leer down at them "How quant, you codey wodeying something like a big boy?..yes you are!"

I say if someone has an idea they want to make, and they can vibe code it. Do it. The whole "Look at you do what I do, without having to learn what I learned (scoff)" isn't a thing that threatens me or I feel I need to demean to remind them of their place (well its done less to remind them of their place, more to remind them of my place above them)
They are people with an idea and interest in software. Why would I want to gate keep?

god forbid people are having fun. same thing with AI image generation. people claiming they are "AI artists" Laughing yet i have never heard anyone using AI to generate images for fun calling themselves "artists". It's sheer coping, no arguments so they have to make shit up to make it work.

playing Black Flag right now, had an idea to add a RPG system, just see if it was possible, e.g having an Assassin's Creed game work more like Gothic games. While its not done the proof of concept actually works. killing enemies gives XP, i added "Strength" as a stat which you can level. Took maybe 6h in total, much of that was just waiting, troubleshooting, getting it to hook to the correct thing.

I am more and more coming to conclusion that ultimately, the A.I is making our lives miserables, there is a reasons I am more and more starting to think for myself and less reliance on A.I, what happend to independent thinking?

I dont let internet, googling or AI or calculators or whatever "think for me". I have no idea where that is coming from. how is it making you life miserable? Any concrete example? Maybe it does for some people, i just dont understand why.

I think social media like instagram is a bigger threat than AI, with AI you actually have to engage and converse and think, with something like instagram you can just get stuck and scroll, no need to think or engage. When i see kids doing that, yeah, i dont think its great. getting used to 10-15 second videos, good luck having patience to read a book etc if getting used to those quick dopamine hits, they will not occur like that for anything in life, not from reading, engaging with others, from working etc

If anything, AI is a big improvement over googling i think, it feels so outdated and braindead in comparison.

Nothing. Same as its always been. Same as when they said this too when internet chatrooms and forums started. And the social media.
OH and Broadcast radio, and then TV..(And books, don't forget the outrage about 'youth not needing to think anymore as anyone can tell them what to think' when printing came out).

It will be fine Mr little chicken. The sky will stay where it is.

https://darioamodei.com/post/we-must-pace-the-frontier

Anthopric is calling for the slowing down of pace of development and goverment regluations. Musk and Altman agree (google is silent btw).

He also acknowlegdes that AI development is spinning out of control.

"My first concern is that, since roughly this summer, AI has been advancing drastically faster, driven primarily by AI’s growing ability to build the next generation of AI. This dynamic is called recursive self-improvement, and it is starting to happen across the industry, including at Anthropic, as we and others have described. Left unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems, and so must be pursued very carefully, if at all."

All kind of theories that this is actually a kind of cartel forming to exclude competitors (China/open source) are floating around the net.

And this is days after that dude quited Anthropic cause of safety concerns while was his tweet was made viral by Anthropic supportors. Laughing

Both views can be true though, a grab of power or serious concerns. AI development accelerating seems legit though and this has always been predicted: at some point AI is gonna self improve and our puny little human brains can't compete anymore.

I also wouldn't be suprised that the White house has a bigger role in this then we think and are forcing them into this behind the scenes.

Does anyone care, China has already almost caught up, so the only difference is US wont be as interesting.

But yes we are at the stage of self-improving, its why it has been going super fast. Not entirely self-improving but to 80% i think Anthropic said.

For sure if unaligned ASI is possible, it will happen. And what are they gonna do if they achieve this, aligned AI under US control: police the world with it preventing other ASI's to spwan Confused

Pick your doom:

1. Unaligned ASI
2. Aligned ASI under US control (Trump), or any other super power
3. Every idiot in the world with a 3k pc having acces to a current tech frontier AI model

So the best option is that it's all a hoax and AI is stupid as fuck and it's all marketing Laughing

Antthropic and OpenAI are looking to IPO this year. After the disaster of SpaceX's IPO, they need to rebuild up some hype.

We won't see AGI in our lifetime. Or at least, not with the current models; it's 100% certainly impossible.

Total BS. Its just AI capable of performing intellectual tasks similar to what a human can. It CLEARLY can do this already and then some, its far superior to us in much of this but yes perhaps mainly due to the SPEED of which i can do this. It can do something in a millisecond while for a human the same could take several hours.

Been working with Fable and it still amazes me every day.

But these IPOs are targeting consumers, not big investors. The big players are actually looking to cash out, they've already made their profit through private investments over the years.

@vurt: any model that's based on backpropagation (working itself back from the answer to the question/prompt) will never lead to AGI.
We might see AGI if there's some entirely new algorithm/model we haven't heard from, that works completely different than LLMs. But looking at the direction the AI companies have been going, and still are, spending trillions on these LLMs models, I doubt it.

Now that's BS. We know perfectly well how AI works. Given enough time (like thousands of years Laughing ), you can perfectly recalculate LLMs responses.
