 |
Since I go to bed listening to audio books, or listening to them as I mill around the house or in my garage shop. Figured I'd toss out my purely subjective list of things I have been listening to incase anyone might find them worth listening to.
Most I listen to are non-fiction/science/nerdy stuff. So if thats not your thing. Save you time reading the post.
These are all the audio book formats I listened to. So reading time might be different. ( ) is total playtime
[Bertrand Russell] A History of Western Philosophy (39 hours)
Don't need to explain what this one is about really title says it. Just philosophy and bio's of philosophical figures from the ancient Greeks to the early 20th century. It’s huge, opinionated, and sometimes dated, but much more entertaining than a neutral textbook.
BUT if you do listen to it, I'd recommend balancing it with:
[Anthony Kenny] A New History of Western Philosophy
As Russell can be a bit self subjective in his assessment. But both still good books.
I’d say Russell for the voice and big picture narrative, then use Kenny as the more reliable second opinion. Neither is completely neutral, but together they balance each other well.

Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion (14 hours)
An introduction to rhetoric. How to make a convincing argument, read an audience, and recognize when someone is using those techniques on you. It uses everything from Aristotle to politics and pop culture, so it feels more like learning the tricks behind everyday persuasion than studying formal debate.
-
Hitch-22: A Memoir (17 hours)
Christopher Hitchens looking back on his life. It’s witty and full of great stories. Any books by him are great.
-
[Robert M. Sapolsky] Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst (26 hours)
A good book covering human behavior and everything that influences it. From chemicals in the brain and our animal instincts to distinctly human traits. How countless factors, from what happened seconds ago all the way back to birth and evolution, form the things we do, say, and how we act. And why.
It covers why we have such a hard time defining where we fall on the spectrum between “100% free will” vs being completely driven by our biology, environment, and circumstances, past, inherited traits, situation, and personal brain chemistry.
-
Evolution Gone Wrong: The Curious Reasons Why Our Bodies Work (Or Don't) (9 Hours)
A look at why the human body has so many strange flaws and awkward design choices. It explains how evolution works with whatever is already there, resulting in compromises like bad backs, difficult childbirth, choking hazards, and other problems that make more sense once you know how we got here.
-
True Crime Case Histories: Massive 15-Book Collection (65 hours)
I know...its a guilty pleasure of mine: Non dramatized tellings of real life fucked up people. Doing fucked up things.
A huge collection of short, straightforward accounts of real murders and other disturbing crimes. It focuses on the victims, perpetrators, investigations, and outcomes without overdramatizing things. I cannot stand books that try to make it 'entertaining' by theatrical prose. These tell the stories. But stick to the provable facts about the people, places, and events. Be warned it may have some bluntly graphic language for events.
-
There Are (No) Stupid Questions ... in Science (5 Hours)
A bunch of weird questions you’ve probably wondered about but never bothered to look up answered with actual science. Very light and easy to jump around in. More fun trivia than a serious science deep dive.

Will add more as I find them in my tablet library.

Most of its the descriptions on audible/goodreads/etc (wherever had the shortest 'about') trimmed down smashed together, and parts taken out. And I added some of my own thoughts at the end.
NO idea if they use AI.
if you don't mean the wording, and mean the layout. That was me trying to make it less wall of text.

Oh shit I forgot:
[Terry Pratchett] DiscWorld (Dunno 100 or so hours, total?)
Any of them, doesn't matter. You don’t need to read them in any specific order.
He parodies everything from wizards and fairy tales to politics, religion, war, and capitalism. Plays on the absurdity of the human condition, even itself about going on's in other books.
It's (sort of) like if HHGTG was fantasy and not sci-fi. One of my favorite fiction authors next to Douglas Adams.
Pratchett is a strong influence on how I run my tabletop RPG game.
