Id say bite the bullet and get a cheap no drive synology (or other) NAS, single bay nothing fancy.
Toss in a cheap 2TB storage drive into it (not a cheap overall drive, a cheap storage one).

Not free I admit.

But since I got mine, I saved its cost 4x over over a decade I had it. And its local so no way anyone can remove my access to it, and whatever I put on it is purely my prerogative.

NAS and cloud storage serve completely different purposes usually, with different perimeters of security. NAS [used to be] cheap storage that sits only one step removed from local hardware. If the house burns, all burns. The point of cloud storage is to add additional steps and layers.

No I agree. you should have three copies of anything you absolutely cannot lose: local, local off machine, and off site.

But the way I look at it. What little I absolutely cannot lose (tax documents, digital birth certs, etc) I can store on my free gmail/drive space easily.

If my house burns down enough to take out everything I own, anything on my NAS at that point is stuff I realized was not "Cannot lose" it was "Just prefer to keep"
Because what I would be up shits creek if I lost, and what I would only be sad I lost are not the same. And if I lost my whole house those digital things, while sad, are way like down now around #156 of "things Im sad I lost".

I still say don't do cloud for large bulk unless you are a business. Waste of money. Throw a NAS at friend/family house, and enable remote access, if you worried.
We survived 40 years of digital items without cloud. It's an optional step for piece of mind for a subscription fee. That is only as safe as the service you use, only as permanent as the company you don't control that runs it, and only as private as the EULA no one reads. But not required.

Edit: also a bit contradicted to the internet privacy debate. Want more control over who knows what about us. While uploading every private photo, information, and moments to machines someone/something you don't know owns, and you don't know where exactly. That then replicates to clusters of that machine worldwide.

I have 1.2GB used out of 2.0GB mostly with photos and videos (RAWs). In addition to that, I have specifically just the RAW files synced in an Adobe cloud. Both of these are grandfathered plans that I have for many years. Looking at the next tier of both services, the price hike is steep. Neutral

On my NAS, I have 13.7TB of accessible storage. I was planning on replacing all disks this year, but … that is hella steep now. Facepalm

My solution is a cheap backup NAS at my mothers house for essential files and photos.

And yes, burning houses happens. A friend of mine lost their house two months back. Its pretty much a tragedy.

It is a tragedy, and it would be a much bigger one if I lost all the photos I have of the people I love.

But do you trust your NAS vendor’s network security? Or that you’ve set up the OS correctly?
I’m keeping my NAS airtight behind firewalls. Cloud services are a much smaller attack surface and I trust big co. to do a better network security job than me.

You're right. Its probably just the feeling of control and the added satisfaction that I set it up by myself. Plus no monthly sub and the ability to access my data on all my devices while being at home even if the internet were to fall out (which obviously never happens, having multiple internet subscriptions).

Like I trust myself to drive my car and feel safe driving, despite the fact that it would be much safer to use the train or the airplane.

edit: Also, I suppose there are better cloud services (I just have not looked into them), but Google Drive (which my school uses, sigh) and Apples iCloud that I've been using sometimes for file transfers to and off my Macbook Air, just don't work that well on KDE. There is a workaround for GDrive for KDE but iCloud is a pita and just works as a PWA. On the other hand Synology Drive just works on all these systems without issues.

Hate on Apple as much as you want but you chose to be in their ecosystem now. You buy 1500€ phones and cheap out on their cloud storage? The 200Gig option is 3€/month, like an espresso per month. Especially for the (I guess less tech savvy )missus, this will be the far better and easier option.

True, but I trust me with my data more than them. And I expect a lot less indepth network attacks than them.

A tank has a lot better armor than my front door. But no one shooting RPG at my front door. It has way better defensive engineers than my house had, because it gets bigger attacks directed at it. My door is good enough for my needs.

But then again I run fast and loose. I have not had windows firewall, UAC, windows defender, or anything on, on my PC for 15+ years.
Don't do stupid shit, stupid shits dont get invited in.

If they can get past my middle of the road amazon router behind my modem, I say have at it. You worked WAY harder to get in, than anything you will find is worth. You are a crap hacker, not from skills, but from effort to pay out ratio, assessment.
Sure you didn't have to work like you broke into fort knox. But you put the effort in to rob the equal to a local one sheriff small town bank, all to make off with $3.25 of valuables.

Your front door is constantly being knocked. If you have ports facing the net you are getting scanned by mass automated bots looking for vulns. It's not the case that you need to be specifically targeted to get owned by a 0day.

100%

I'd never use a cloud service for anything even remotely important. If I need to backup something I'd rather buy a 4-8TB hard drive (or two in case I want at least a minimum of redundancy).

There's so much telemetry, snooping and privacy invasion in Windows 10 and ESPECIALLY Windows 11. I've spent hours on disabling services, block all known outgoing ports, scoured through gpedit and registry to disable anything that may send data to MS, blocked plenty of those ports on the router since MS bypass it's own firewall for some their shit etc. etc. etc.

@DXWarlock: You're basically the perfect goal for become a slave in a botnet.

You're basically wide open to intrusion. If you don't have anything sensitive whatsoever on your PC I guess you don't thing it matters but whatever privacy you think you have is null.

You have to remember, ALL US hardware and software companies MUST obey the US government's demand to include backdoors, access to all data, include high level spyware etc.

Intel MEI is the biggest threat to privacy as far as I'm concerned since it can't be turned off. It's a chip that every PC motherboard has. It's got it's own CPU which means it doesn't have to power up the entire system, it's always listening on the NIC even if PC is turned off.
The only way to stop it from being a threat is to turn off the PSU and/or disconnect the internet cable. That chip allows anyone with access to power up certain parts of the PC without you noticing it. It can be used to access your storage devices in silence, to install keyloggers, screen capture software that sends your screen over the internet and other spyware solutions.

We're living in the days of anti-privacy.

True..I see port scans, ftp attempts and stuff all the time in network logs. As not only do I have all that off, my machine is the permanent DMZ IP on my network.

My door is always knocked on. I just don't let strangers in that can answer it. Sure someone can kick it in. But like my front door, chances are so low I don't feel the need to get a bracer bar for when I sleep.

It's not I am unaware of the risks. Its that in nearly 20 years with multiple, and now 7 PC's in my house, never a had problem.

The way I see it: There is billions of PCs and laptops out there in the wild random tech illiterate people have. And the vast majority of them are fine unless they click/download something stupid. SO average joe's risk is statistically pretty low until joe does something himself to invite the person in.
I honestly cannot think of anyone I know, or that I fixed the PC of that had issues that was "Hmm..They did nothing wrong I can find, but someone still wrecked it" it was always they clicked/downloaded/ran a thing they clearly shouldn't have.

I get it's not a zero percent chance. BUT it's so close to zero long as you have a little sense about you I (myself) do not see the need. While I wouldn't tell someone to do it my way, I wouldn't tell them they are wrong if they also did.
And I get there is not a zero percent chance I don't download/click something I shouldn't have. But If I do I consider that my 'idiot tax' fixing the mess I made for doing so.

@Frant
Sorry, I meant amazon as in "picked a random linksys router on amazon" it's a cheap linksys one and I put WW-DRT on it.

Well, DD-WRT fixes the known backdoors in the stock firmware so you're good on that.

What's left is Intel ME. Even if you disable AMT in BIOS, Intel ME is still active with it's own CPU and TCP/IP stack with access to the network interface. It can hide it's outbound traffic as random HTTPS packets and thereby bypass the router.

Quote:
Vulnerabilities that work without AMT:

INTEL-SA-00086 (2017): Remote code execution in ME firmware, confirmed exploitable even when AMT is absent or "disabled."
Ring −3 rootkit (Invisible Things Lab, 2017): Remapped protected ME memory to install a persistent rootkit, working regardless of AMT state.

However, the only agency (as far as we know) that could use Intel ME like that is NSA (and indirectly other government agencies requesting help from NSA) and unless you're a spy/terrorist or are on their radar for some other reason you're fine.

If you have some legally questionable stuff on your PC you should be fine by locking down the security risks that Windows itself pose - all cloud nonsense, all telemetry, anything that sends data to MS due to US laws forcing MS to make Windows the most insecure OS for privacy ever.

It's not enough to disable a couple of services, block outbound IP's in the firewall (the routers firewall in particular since MS can bypass it's own firewall) etc. You need to do many registry edits as well as disable/set values in Group Policy editor. Only install an LTSC version of Windows where a lot of the bloat and privacy crap is already absent from start. The LTSC version of Win10 or Win11 also exposes the full set of group policies which lets you do a lot more than the Home/Pro versions.

Yeah, I know, I'm going waaaay overboard with this stuff. Going this deep in order to protect my PC from spying eyes is more than just overdoing it. I don't have stolen government documents, I'm not a spy or terrorist etc. As everybody else I've got plenty of warez.
I just got obsessed with my right to privacy. I don't like the feeling of my PC constantly being under automated surveillance or that Windows is constantly sending a ton of data to their own servers without any kind of consent from my part.
So I kept digging deeper and deeper, learning more, finding more ways to secure my system as much as possible. I'm still on Windows 10 LTSC which means I'm still not 100% protected no matter how much time I spend on locking down security on my PC. It's become a serious hobby for me, one that gives me a certain peace of mind.

If I wanted a truly secure PC I'd go with something like Tails (security focused linux distro) but I've never been into linux since I think it's a very messy platform that isn't particularly user friendly.

In the end, the only way to have a truly secure PC is to keep it offline 24/7, no Wifi module and no network cable attached.
