I had fun playing the previous one despite its hilarious over-the-top Japness and arcade mechanics, as the missions themselves weren't too insulting and required a bit of planning. Ran fine and played decently well with M&KB, too. The first six games were console exclusive so no idea (bar the exceptionally derpy Assault Horizon spin-off )
Wtf this doesn't even have proper flight stick support. The option is there in the menu, but it officially only supports like 2 new controllers specifically sold for this game.
I managed to get my old flight stick somewhat running via mods, but it's a pain and there is no reason for this to be so complicated.
Then again I was just playing around a bit if I like this type of game or not and will see if I can get it running in VR decently.
Also the download size is ridiculous at 140GB.

Haven't tried this specific one, but it should be fine: https://www.nexusmods.com/acecombat8wingsoftheve/mods/53
This seems to provide only a GUI on top of the previous mod, where you had to map buttons manually, but then it worked fine, and so should this then.

I suck at flying games. I never play them. I don't really like them. The lore about random country names doesn't make any sense to me. They included a token waifu as a combat pilot.
WHY AM I ENJOYING THIS GAME SO MUCH?

Yeah, I've seen her in a comparison with the the new Hurrs of Durrs "female" squad member:

@bringiton: because these are not really flying games, they're 3D shoot 'em ups with plane skins and no physics
But yeah it's a surprisingly entertaining formula for what it is. Its structure actually reminds me of the ol' Descent: Freespace, only with extravagant nonsensical japbells and whistles. There's even an indie replica called Project Wingman that works reasonably well despite the limited budget.
Just finished this. I did not expect to get invested in the story so deep as I did. It's completely cheesy and expectable, but overall it's for the better of it. I fully recommend playing this.
Spoiler:
I was hoping the last mission would go completely nuts and have you shoot down the spear in space, but it's fine as it is I guess.
