I dont think AI has developed to the point where you can have exciting events happening around the player, and make sure the player see's them and is a part of them without scripting it.
How else would you do this? There hasnt been a practical solution so far, and good AI can never completely replace scripted events. How would any game work without scripts, the world would be so static and nothing would occur, and even if it did how would you know the player is going to be there to witness it?

To be honest - I really couldn't give a flying fuck if it works because it's scripted, it's AI or because Valve are sprinkling magic dust on the CDs. If the effect is the same it doesn't matter.

yeah, i dont mind scripting as it can add tremendous depth to a game. Still valve promised more then they could deliver...

but scripting too much kills off any replay value a game might have in the near future... doom 3 for example or call of duty

Well if you can come up with another way to do a linear FPS, be sure and let everyone know.
The point is scripted events carry the storyline, but the game itself consists of the combat and whatever other gameplay elements they can come up with. With the excellent physics, those gameplay parts will have tremendous replay value.
Lets say an alien ship blasts through the wall and starts attacking people through a scripted event. This will occur everytime, but the method you choose to fight it will always change. The physics engine allows for some incredible stuff and I dont care if 90% of the game is scripted, they have already proved to me that the fights will be fun and the environment is dynamic, not like Doom3.
Of course this is assuming they implement some intelligent AI to do battle against. We already know you get allies to work with too, so now you got squad vs squad battles and supposidly excellent AI that implements tactics on the fly, add on top of all this the physics and environmental possibilities, and your in for one hell of a fight no matter how many times you play it.

yea but im sayin a completely non scripted game would have like optional scripts like heavy employment of physics to defeat enemies..... a pseudo skills system might be nice (like not too rpgish but a nice touch), trading etc... its sad but die hard FPS's will meet there end soon and more games like NOLF, SS2, Deus Ex (1 not 2 *shudder*), and S.T.A.L.K.E.R will take over

I called EBGames before.
I live in Montreal and they told me that the store has a date of Sept. 2nd for the pre-orders
Obviously it could be brought back, but it's still interesting to know.

If you went to ebgames.com you would of seen that it's listed for 9/1. That's NOT the date it's coming out. It's just basically a point saying that it's coming out sometime in September.

Well in stores it's the 2nd. 9/1=9/2 in stores. That's how it works. Check out Halo 2. Everyone knows it's coming out November 9th but ebgames.com has it 11/8. That's because it ships the 8th and will be in stores the 9th.

* 8/11 the Cafe's turn on.
* 8/16 CZ/ATI users pre-load.
* 8/18 CZ/ATI turns on.
* 8/17 HL-2 pre-load starts "
looks like it might just be around the corner...yippie...the fat man spoke!

The fat man indeed is Santa Clause. If not by reputation than by size. He alone monitors the toys that are to be delivered for us come Christmas. He is the jolly man in red. He alone watches as his pupils create, modify, and program a game that he alone promised to us. Valve is nothing but Santa’s work shop. And counter-strike is nothing but Mrs. Clause. A woman designed to perfectly attend mans needs. Long sleepless nights. Pleasurable evenings. And just as a woman she’s nerve wrecking. How many times have you yelled at counter-strike, hum? It’s not that it is a game, her eyes and her luscious hair took control over you. She no longer is an action paced first person shooter she is your female companion that stood by you for years. A female companion that took care of you for years and a female companion that listened to your problems. If not when then that is how and if not how it was who. And no matter what problems you had (premature ejaculation, social shyness, or even wet your bed at night), counter-strike was always there for you. And Gabe fat man Navell realized the beauty of the graphically lacking, game play inducing woman that his company dearly supported. I’m happy that the half life 2 will come out soon. Preload on the 17th and play on the 2nd of September. Just as young ones, padwans, newbies are getting ready for school. But alas my ex-wife stole my heart when I fell in love with her sister, day of defeat. Sure I’ve been involved in that relationship for years now. But as I’m nearing the date of half life 2 the love that I so dearly possessed will come to a halt and I will insert my semen into the lovely body of half life 2. YAY! It will be like loosing your virginity but this time the sparks will fly! This time a child will be born. This time it will not be just a game. This time it will be MY BABY!

I have said it before and I will say it again ... just watch when the game is released and it turns out (hopefully) to be fantastic.. all the name calling kiddies will be kissing Gabes ass and saying how great VALVe are....
as a previous poster said someday the kids will grow up and realise fat people have feelings to ... the kiddies will also realise how fat they have become themselves after sitting at the puter and drinking to much alcohol and they will wish they could be thin again like when they used to when they slagged fat people off on the NForce forums

I don't fully understand this pre-loading process, but does that mean the full version of Half-Life 2 will be downloadable (via steam) and potentially ready to play on the 17th August? When it's 'turned on' will anything else need to be downloaded, or will all steam users just be allowed at that point to play it? Gabe was quoted to have said they were aiming for a mid-late September release, but was he just talking about the retail version? I heard they always planned to release it earlier on steam and I suppose it's a lot quicker so does that mean we could all be playing HL2 by the end of this month?
