Gotta be shitting me. I play that game with headphones at 1am with all the lights off and its, in a word, startling.
It might be scary if they had added some variety to the monster encounters...enter room, 2-5 monsters attack from random directions. Pick up armor, wall behind u explodes and monster comes out. This is about the extent of the games monster placement throughout the ENTIRE GAME. Its just random monsters thrown at you until you finish the game. How is this scary?
You would think they would change this around a bit, but nope, the last level might as well be the first. The only twist is the hell levels, which dont arrive until you've finished about 15 or so replica levels.
I'm inclined to think some of you havnt actually played any other horror type games if you think D3 is the best. Games that rely on cheap thrills do not deserve to be called the scariest. Any idiot can throw together a bunch of levels with monsters and scripted events.
It takes a skilled developer to craft the proper timing, tension, build-up, atmosphere, and innovation to TRULY scare a player. These do not exist in Doom 3, its the same formula over and over throughout the entire game, and its ridiculous to call it the scariest game ever. |
I have to agree with you completely. Too much repetition in Doom3. Always those same fat zombies or same Imps.

In the begining its a bit scary as its new but now after a bit of playing you expect something to pop behind you

eh not scary anymore for me either I also played at 1am and headphones, it is somewhat scary if you play it that way, but it wouldn't make you jump, just would give you an anxiety rush. Playing the game in the afternoon is well, lets just say, you will see how stupid the gameplay really is. I found resident evil games more scary, but that's prolly cause there was a huge story behind it and everything had an explanation and consequences.

Yea I agree with you. The first hour of the game is scary and crazy as hell but then it starts to die down.

I've sadly gotta agree, after getting a bit further into the game I don't really find doom 3 half as scary. There are a few instances where you might be suprised but the scariness of the first few hours dissappears.
It does get too predictable and thats what ruins it. The first time it introduces you to a pinky demon was cool though.

Im sorry to say that d3 dont scare me as much as i hoped, it's a great game but it never builds up that tension as system shock 2 or avp 2 does!
remeber the first halfhour in avp 2 when u have to go down and turn on the landingbeacon (i think) u have goosebumps all over and are just expecting something to happen and it dont and it dont and it dont! and then all hell breaks loose. Thats some scary shit man! made me poo my pants! or when u go down and find some other marines and the female one tells u to kill her, when u do you have to haul ass out of there with the aliens chasing u and you're having a hard time finding the right way out of there while the xenomorphs just keep coming as you drop grenades and...........
That was scary! That was tension!

Im scared just thinking of it!
Doom3 was a walk in the park. Look at how big my cojones are!
no kidding: Doom3 was not scary, and only surprising for the first half hour. Rest of the game was very good, Just not scary.

Doom ³ was idd scary for the first hours. Then it became repetitive.
I didn't play AvP 1 or 2 , but my top 3 scary games must be:
1. the first hours of D3
2. Silent Hill 3
3. Tomb Raider (I can't really tell why those polygons scare me, but I just couldn't play the game withouth sweating my ass off...)

It's amazing isn't it, all the hoopla surrounding Doom 3. I'm just making my way through the communications tower, and the scariest moments are when something unexpected happens, like a corpse gets thrown in the air in front of you, or when you see an imp in silhouette at the back of some stairs, brief moments of inspiration in an otherwise predictable game.
ID has made the classic mistake of relying too much on technology and not on creating great psychological drama. One on the most frightening things I ever saw was a 60's black and white film called The Haunting, try it with the lights out and you'll see what I mean.
I did play Realms of the Haunting once, I think it was Gremlin that developed it, a great traditional haunted house story with something weird going on in the basement. Dooms frights aren’t paced very well, there's too much up front horror, and predictable creature movement resulting in not quite enough tension.
I guess the difference with AVP2 especially was the great moments of nothing happening, just the long silences and the awful knowledge that round the next bend something terrible was waiting.

Exactly! this is the one of the best ways to get feedback on games that we develop! There's an other point to be made also. Some posts in this forum about dl or buying games are pretty stupid. It's not about buying a new ferrari for JM over att ID or enything like that! What you have to remember is that most developers are guys just like you, who loves good games and vill work 16 hour days for months just to put out a game that people hopefully will like.
A lot of people work hard as hell to do this and sometimes it's blood sweat and tears behind the releases. I know that some people don think that hard work should be rewarded (communists) but if seeing your family one hour a day for 9 months prior to a big release is'nt worth a ferrari at the end of all the hard work you've put in while neglecting your family and friends, then i dont know what is.
Dowload az much warez az u want, but don bitch about developers getting rich, do mind all the hard work and all the sacriffices we have to make to give u these games.

AVP2 and system shock 2 stay the scariest. Then Doom3 maybe... but There are too much imps in the game to make it scary. Imp here, imp there... And their design isn't that scary as well. Silent hill series and AVPs HR Giger Monster design were a lot more frightening.
