You haven't heard about pan and scan before? It's the reason I haven't watched anything on TV3 and TV Denmark in years. Well... that and the barrage of commercials and the shitty translations. :/
4:3 isn't bad per se (if you're watching a Kubrick movie), but a movie is supposed to be viewed in the original aspect ratio as intended by the director. nouseforaname's screenshot illustrates that quite nicely.

Most TV Stations use letterbox nowadays, so its not a problem.

I'm not sure if the situation has changed, but the shit channels I mentioned only went with the OAR once in a blue moon. They buy their crap shows in bulk and if the 4:3 edition of Universal Soldiers 7: Soldier Harder is cheaper, they settle for that.
I don't really watch much TV these days anyway, so they can continue butchering movies for all I care.
