Microsoft has responded to the recent XBox 360 Hacking Announcement. The hack updates the firmware on the optical drive to allow playback of backup copies of games.

The core security system has not been broken. However, on some Xbox 360 consoles the authentication protocol between the optical disc drive and the console may be attacked via a complex software and hardware modification which could allow people to play illegally copied and modified games. We continue to invest in the security of the platform and will respond appropriately as unauthorized activity is identified.

hehe

Well, that was the response when The Specialist did the original hack on the Hitachi.

SniperKilla, do you think The Specialist might be inclined to release the Hitachi firmware, now that the Toshiba-Samsung firmware is in the wild?

probally not..

would be nice to have some prepatched scene releases... im sure we would have seen more from SELECT had they not been nuked to hell yesterday for the only valid release around

Yes. But I'm semi-retired from the Xbox Scene. Too much workload on my "real" job to deal with things (working overtime, frequent trips and 3 hours commuting every day to client site) and still keep a family life. MXM just got to be too much and I didn't get much help from others writing code for it.

As for the Hitachi Firmware/Specialist issue, I think the guy should release it to the general public now. There is no point in holding it back... ignoring whether or not he gave it to Microsoft (that would have been dumb on many levels, but mostly because there is an implied rule about letting Microsoft figure out the hacks for themselves), he could easily use a cut-out to release it to the public, and I'd be willing to bet there are a few companies that would make it worth his while to do so.

If The Specialist really, truly wants to help move the hacking community forward, to the point to where homebrew can be run on the Xbox 360, releasing software that allows more people the opportunity to experiment with potential exploits is the only way to do that.

By being able to run recorded DVDs, while the executables cannot be modified, the data files CAN BE. Buffer overflows and the like are far less likely to cause exploits on the new system; but not impossible. It may even result in the discovery of code modules embedded in non-signature protected files. If we find that, we'll have an exploit that will open up the Xbox 360 to homebrew.

It would be in Micro$oft's best interest to delay a counter-measure. An exploitable xbox360 should increase sales no end. Just in time to saturate the market before Sony's big push. Then... when the dust settles, they'll end the exploit. I might be over-analysing M$'s tactics but they do like to play dirty.

I'll wait until there are enough decent games to make it worth my while.

Tell you something? thats the best thing you can do.. it dosn't matter if that side get damaged. Its not reading the CD itself... just the thin... how to explain, its because the CD is "foliated"

Deelix is right, it's just a thin layer of "plastic" the data is recorded on the same layer you write on with a pen, not the disc itself.

Actually DVD data layers are inbetween two thicker sheets of plastic whereas CDrom datalayer is protected only by the reflective sheet, thin spray of laquer and thicker layer of offset printed label graphics.

On a CD you can reach the data layer from the labelside with a sharp pin scratch, but on a DVD you need to penetrate a sheet of plastic on either side.

thats my theory aswell.. this exploit/hack doesnt benefit the PS3 sales at all.. let alone the prices on the 3 nexgen consoles where a 360 + a Wii would (supposedly) go for same price as 1 PS3... Cool

i better play it safe tho and upgrade my dash asap - before counter measures are out.. Shocked - ghost recon is game enough for me Smile

Little of topic but now is a store in Sweden earning money on patching Xbox360 with this patch! Is it just me or is this not wrong? Sure they take payment to do the work but actually using this patch/tool they downloaded of the internet (illegal also because it aint allowed to download that from internet)... its just WRONG!

I read about it, apparently they also replace your laserhead if you have a (hitachi?) drive, so they can put the samsung firmware on, don't seem like a bad deal if your not used to tinkering with these things yourself.

Its just chipper.se doing it. They have a reputation to think about, they have always been chipping xbox's and stuff.

What I don't understand on the other hand is how they can do this. On the xbox1 they flashed with any bios you wanted from the beginning then they started using cromwell because the hacked bios's are illegal. But now they flash hacked firmware on the DVD-drives thats illegal... hmmmm..

However, I wouldn't buy from them anyway. Price is to high. For a preflashed X360 Premium they take $678.67 (todays currency, 4995SEK to USD).

If T12 is the silver screws I found it on torx multi-tool I bought at menards. It was hard to find there but after enough searching I found one. The black screwes were to small for the tool, but you dont have to remove those anyways.
