Well if I get more FPS with it off then I'll have it off. I play mostly all my games with shadows off so I don't care for them. Plus christ it's not like I won't play the game again. When I get a better comp I'll play the game with shadows on.

It’s all fine by me. But if you play it on high settings at a large resolution and get acceptable frames per second why not just lower the settings lower the resolution to gain more frames per second and enable the darn thing. Clearly you’re playing it at high resolution on a high setting to experience the full glory of doom 3. Am I wrong? If I am I do apologize. But since you want to experience the full glory of doom with out jeopardizing you’re visual aftertaste why not simply play it at these high settings on a tad lower resolution. That wouldn’t cause an eye sore now would it? And with that set you could easily re-enable the shadows without any problems. Still have the glorious frames per second, still experience the jaw dropping visuals and enjoy the game the way it was meant to be enjoyed. Very Happy

Unlike you I can’t run the game at a resolution larger than 800 by 640 and low visual settings. But it doesn’t bother me. Frame rates are acceptable at best and the game play does get rather choppy at times but hey you don’t see me complaining Crying or Very sad Sad I'd kill to have the frame rates you get on your machine Smile

From 800x600 to 1280x1024 it basically runs the same. But keep in mind I'm NOT playing it at a constant 30 fps. I'm usually playing it at a constant 20-25 fps. It's playable though and it gets the job done. When all hell breaks loose it either stays at 20 or dips to 15. But it's still playable. If I put shadows on it will dip to 15 fps and when all hell breaks loose down to 5-10. Having shadows on at 800x600 or 1280x1024 I get the same results. Like I said I really don't care for shadows. I can live without them. Plus I really don't think they're gonna change my enjoyment of the game. If I like the game I like the game with or without shadows. Turning them on won't do anything. And like I said once I get a better comp I'll turn it back on.

Also look at my specs. I'm pretty sure your comp is better than mine so you would be able to get an even better frame rate.

Oh and here's an update. I put it to 800x600 and put on shadows and it ran just as bad as 1280x1024 with shadows.

My game actually runs better on high quality than medium or low quality. I think it's because of my 3D card. It's a DirectX 9 card and it's 256 MB so that helps it.

Just completed doom 3 ,one word fantastic!!! I loved it from start to finish Very Happy I was glad to see the good old spider robots on the second to last level Smile My only dissapointment was that the bosses were spaced out strangly only 4 in the game Confused and that the last boss was too easy i beat him the first time but i suppose i found it easy because i read nearly every pda message Wink BTW does anyone know a site that i can send my appreciation to the guys at ID (it's not on their site???)

haha what are you, blind? Smile
every single thing (almost) in the game casts shadows when they are on but when they are off you wont see any shadows on things like chairs and many other things.
the darkness in the game is not caused by shadows dude, thats just darkened areas Smile

there is a huge difference betwean soft shadows and darkened areas.
softshadows is what you turn on when shadows are on, its the shadows that can move and is cast from all the objects in the game, things like chairs, desks, lamps, boxes, enemies, haitech machines etc etc.

I know with shadows on chairs, desks, etc and I know the darkness in the game is not caused by shadows (didn't I say that in the post?). I just don't give a damn. I'd rather have the game run smooth than play with shadows. For me they don't effect my gameplay experience. I've play the game with shadows on for a little bit and it didn't change my experience at all.

I suggest to keep playing. Where are you at? The middle is a little slow. Once you get to the Delta Labs it gets better and even better once you get to Hell. I'm a little past Hell and really enjoying the game. I didn't expect a FPS game like Half-Life or Far Cry. I expected a FPS like Doom and that's what I got Very Happy

Yes I know Sad. It could have been worse though - I could have been robbed of £40.

I'm a couple of levels before the Delta Labs so maybe I'll try to get a bit further in a couple of weeks or something. I can't stand trying to play any more just now though - it really is too repetitive and it's getting really boring.

It's called just 1 example. Here I'll fix it. by not having the creatures and other stuff like desks and chairs have shadows. I just said creatures cause their the main things that cast shadows.

Yea I got to the middle and the game started to annoy me. I was almost close to just getting cheats so I could go through the game quickly without having to worry but I didn't and kept playing.

bit late chiming in here but i got home this weekend from a holiday so i thought id play it for a bit til i posted any comments, and well overall while it does have some amazing elements i have to say that most of the negatives i'm inclined to agree with. The main one is repetitiveness. That said there's some suprisingly good elements in the game, i cant wait for other games to utilise the d3 engine and see what it can really do. The shadows n lighting were good, the enemy models were superb. Now id just like to see this engine handle multiple environments. My verdict 7/10

I finished doom3 in about 4-5 days and not once did I consider it repetitive.
Even though the gameplay is pretty simple (shoot everything) the insane number of scripted events combined with the atmosphere was enough to keep me excited playing all the way though.

Im curious, for those of you who think doom3 is repetitive, do you guys also consider other first person shooters repetitive? (halflife, halo, etc) For the most part they all have similar gameplays.
The last first person shooter i played that i had to stop playing because i got bored was painkiller. It was really fun for a bit...but i just couldnt play it for very long without getting sick of it. Never got that feeling with doom3!

The whole repetitive or not discussion is opinion based. Some people find it repetitive because zombies attack you out of different locals mostly from behind and some find it non-repetitive for some obscure reasoning I’m unaware of Very Happy I find it amazing, i have a shit memory so it's not repetitive for me ;P but i only played the first few levels because i always forget to save so i haven't passed the same point because of my terrifying fear of something jumping out behind me Sad i hate playing games at night Razz I swear to god I jump all the time at the part where it teaches you to use the flash light I’m like FUCK THIS! Ha-ha-ha maybe that’s the same reason why I haven’t beaten undying Very Happy using the crystal on the painting and hearing the screams just didn’t make it seem like an enjoyable game for me Very Happy

Here's an interesting review:

http://www.ccgr.org/article_read.asp?id=584

The best quote has to be:

"As a twenty-one year old I have to say I was freaked out, disturbed, and horrified by Doom III’s content. I can’t imagine what a thirteen year old would feel like. After hours of exposure to this game, I could see a child’s attitude and personality change because of this game."
