Hunting for food is one thing. I fish for salmon when I am camping (2-4 weeks, I need meat) but I take no pleasure in killing the fish. The whole killing takes the pleasure out of catching any fish for food. I am just happy to get something better than processed food.
I think whale hunting is worse because they are wild and their numbers are not what they used to be. They depend on fish, plankton and seals for survival and we humans are fucking this up. It is such a fragile ecosystem. I believe our future generations will not see any whales. A HUGE misfortune for our kids!!! Maybe a few smaller breeds but not many. We need a much larger population in order to create the gene pool for adaptation to their ever changing, human induced environment.
I don’t think this whole augment can be qualified in terms of cats and dogs. They breed prolifically. Whales do not.
Countries that made a living (before) off of whale meat need to change. Whale populations have changed drastically in today's world and different countries need to take that into consideration. It is not a viable resource. Japan is one of the worse. Bays of blood.
OFF TOPIC
One of my friends is an animator for Dreamworks, he is doing a cartoon about an Orca who is lost from his pod. I have heard the story boards and it sounds really good. But who knows if they will finish it or if it will even get made.

Contrary to many countries' beliefs, the whale is not a species. The "whale" consists of many species, where some are in danger of becoming extinct. It is illegal to hunt these kind. But other types of whales are more than enough fertile to support their species, and will not be endangered by hunting.
I think it's wrong to compare any kind of whale, fish, boar, whatever animals we eat to households pets like cats and dogs - because we don't have the same kind of relations to them. For example, in the western world we have them as pets, in the eastern world many people eat them for dinner.

I would mind tasting human meat, because that would be eating your own kind, you sicko

I don't care about tradition so I'm not using it as an excuse, all animals are good to be hunted for food, as long as you don't extinct them and keeping their population on level. Killing for bones to decorate your house, I see it as wrong, because I don't need such decorations nor do I find it beautifull in anyway.
And indeed seals shouldn't be tortured, they should be killed in a lesser painfull way.

Yes, I know whales are not a species in themselves. I am not an idiot, you idiot! Thank-you very much.
And as far as hunting and extinction what do you know? please tell? The point I was was making was about the breeding pattern and and time factor regarding whales. Also their genetic make up in overcoming the human phenomena.
I was not comparing cats and dogs to this, quite the opposite. I simply said they breed prolifically as opposed to whales which do not.
Maybe you should read the whole post, and get a feel for it before you shoot your mouth off!

you are somehow contradiciting yourself at one point, you say that you disagree with elephant killing, but then you say that seals should be killed in a less painfull way, seals are killed with the sole purpose of getting their skin to make clothes.
and concerning the "all animals are good to eat" part, of course everyone has right to their opinion, but you know that most people would never eat animals like cats, dogs,hamsters, wolfs, dolphins and so on, because they respect those animals above all the others, the same happens with whales.
whales are one of the most loved animals in existence, and just like for many people is disgusting to know that in some places in China, cats are eaten normally, for most people is also disgusting to know that whales are being killed and eaten like that.

No, I said that I would never kill an elephant for its bone, same would apply for killing a seal for its skin. But if you do kill them, make sure they don't get extinct and kill them in a less painfull way.
And people respect animals like hamsters, dolphins, cats, dogs for some personnal reasons or sentiments based on tradition, like because they find the animal to be cute or they happened grow custom and attached to the animals they see everyday around them or because society tells them that Flipper is nice and helpfull, but somehow those same people have no problem eating a hamburger from a cow at each lunch break.
My point is, animals are animals, I'm not the one who is applying double standard or contradicting myself, it's most of the other people that are like that, they cry when a whale get killed for meat and made headlines, while don't shed a tear for the countless cows that gets a pin in their head and end upon their plate each day. Some animals just have a better PR.
If you don't want to eat some animal because you happened to love them more then another animal, then don't eat them, but don't expect me to do the same.

I see your point, I'm not blind folded to a single perspective and way of thinking and ignore everything else like many other people, and maybe it's me that place whales in a pedestal, but somehow, after all I've read and know about whales, compared to all the other animals, It's a matter of fact that whales in general, are the 2nd most intelligent species on this planet, right after us, it's undeniable that their cognitive functions are above every other species, and despite all the controversy, it has already been proven that they have linguistic capabilities. the only other species with those same capabilities is the human race, and maybe dolphins to some level, but to compare a dolphin with a whale is just like to compare a monkey to a human.
that's the main reason why whales are so loved and protected.
and imo, being human is to know how to distinguish what species deserve our respect more than others. for instance, when a fly or a bee is flying around your house or even a mouse looking for something to eat, you kill them without any kind of remorse or reservation, but you would never kill a dog because he was boring you, and if you did, I can promise you that you would feel a deep remorse and regret. it's obvious that some animals are lesser than others, and that some animals should be protected like humans. that is what I believe, but everyone has right to their perspective, I just believe I'm right about this subject.

Come to think about it I think you are right about the british humour. It's only funny if you are drinking. I have watched Monthy Pyton countless times but yet I can't remember a single one from beginning to end.

Hitchhiker's Guide don't have whales being rescued by aliens.
It does have dolphins going back home.
Whales died.
Oh and it has a scene where a whale actually falling down from 10000 feet and splatters its guts and intestines all over the surface of some alien planet.
