Provision needs to fix their release, that VC++ Runtime Error doesn't happen with the purchased version.
I tried everything to make it work, Cat 6.4 & 6.5, new sound drivers (Auzentech Xplosion), -nosound, -dxlevel 81, turning acceleration down in dxsetup, etc. and the game crashes within a minute or two every time. Loaded the real thing from steam and it works fine. Never had a problem with their Sin release, but there's definitely something wrong with this one.

It crashed the game and forced my display into 4 bit color mode and I had to restart. Upon boot, my IDE devices wouldn't load and I hd to manually clear my CMOS.

Never had a single crash with Provision releases , maybe its me but i think that in the year 2006 Gfx with Dx-8 are crap and thats why they aren`t suported by most groups , the same goes with win 2k and those who bitch all about that they game don`t run must finaly understand that the game industry is runned by hardware/software corporations that don`t what to live in the stone age and must fight with others about money , its a natural evolution of things (kill all to be at the top) and thats why we are or those who have old PCs are fucked and new ones too becoz in a money hungry world we allways lose .
1. Shit steam - the crapies idear that some one could have its like i will sell my soul to play this game , and think about those that bought the Hl2 when it hit the stores and suddenly runned this game and a BIG screen now showed YOU MUST HAVE NET TO PLAY for what a SINGLE PLAYER GAME
2.The steam has your soul - yup give them your money and you can play games , fuck with them bye bye games ,
3.Steam leaves and you lose - so WHAT with the HYPE about the EPISODES hmmm think about it if steam suddenly crased (declare bankruptcy) you have no HL2 , no more steam games , no new start game , they RELEASE those eps for the fuel they need to run they self created steam system
So what now .... i don`t know what will Vista do to US but i don`t like it now ...

Didn't have any problems at all with the game. Unpacked, installed the update since I had it anyway and started playing. Played the entire game without any problems at all...

Well I agree with you, but I have a DX9 card (X850XT PE), Windows XP, etc. and it still crashed every time before I could even get into the game. I didn't need the Provision update, but I got it anyway just in case--still didn't work. $ilent$uicide's sig shows a 7900GTX and an X-Fi, so there's absolutely no reason the game should crash on a machine like his.
And like I said, Ep1 doesn't crash like that with the real thing, only Provision's. Why Sin Ep1 worked and this doesn't, I have no idea.

I read the nfo, and even before that I knew some people were nuking it for phoning home. Tried it a bunch of times with no connection, crashed every time. Tried it once with a connection, still crashed. That's about where I gave up.

Same here. Unpacked, didn't install the update as I neither have a last-century graphics card nor use a no longer supported OS and started playing. Played the entire game with only one minor graphical issue (those pink spots) during the final battle in the train station when the Stalker shot his special weapon at me. Sometimes during that and depending on my current position and POV, I got those pinkies for a split second. Apart from that, no problems at all...

I experienced this bug too... Is this solved with update 1 from provision or just with this 15mb fix?
