depends, read the nfo to see what (if any) has been stripped. if the word complete is in the release name then its complete. there's dvd9 and dvd5, i dont know how many dvd5 is still released by the movie companies, but that's the only one that fits on our recordable dvd's so far (well, not counting dl dvdrs since they're hardly wide-spread yet). so to fit a dvd9 to a dvdr you downsample the video, compress the audio, rip some language and extras etc..

atleast that's what i've heard, i'm not really an expert. I'm on kazaa Wink

example of a "complete"-release:
Miami.Vice.Vol1.1984.PAL.COMPLETE.DVDR-GUPDVDR
AUDiO: [X] DD 2,0 [X] English
ViDEO: [X] Re-encoded [5]
MENU: [X] Complete
EXTRAS: [X] All

It depends on three things, basically:

1) The length of the movie
2) The quality of the original encoding
3) The size/qty of extras on the disc

Generally, if we assume that the average bitrate of a DVD movie is about 5 Mb/s for video and approximately 448 kb/s for audio, then a DVD-5 (single-layered DVD) will fit roughly 112 minutes of movie. Of course, you have to subtract a little bit for subtitles, menus, etc. So if the original movie is less than, say, 1 hour 50 minutes you have a good chance of getting the whole movie to fit on a regular DVD-R without re-encoding it.

This consequently gives that if the movie is around 90 minutes then surely a lot of extras also will fit onto the disc.
